Why I like Heroclix
Posted 02/02/2006 at 16:20 by ohoni
This was in response to a thread that a judge posted on the official board calling me out. Use it as reference if you question my devotion to this game.
I'm the sort of person, for better or worse, that does not feel compelled to voice my opinion when I am content. I only mention things that I find upsetting, or particularly great. For example, I commented favorably when they announced Electric Superman, Mary Marvel, and Kyle Rayner, because I like them being in the game. Didn't really comment on Adam Strange, or Vixen, or dozens of other characters because I was fine with them. I did comment on the figures that I thought were flawed in some way, because I wanted that potentially noted, and either corrected, or at least not repeated in future.
For the record, I like Heroclix. I like the dials, I like the sculpts, I like that plenty of my favorite comic characters are in this form. I like pretty much every power on the dial, and I like how they interact. I like most of the team abilities, and only dislike then they are made worthless through the effects of BFCs. I like Feats, I like pogs (in moderation), I like Special Objects, and I even like those BFCs that aren't designed specifically to nerf figures, abilities, or TAs. [edit: and as of HC2.0, I also like White Powers, and the Duo mechanic (just not how they've chosen to apply it in the form of dual-sculpt dials). I also like having 60 sculpts per set, just not having only about 20 good ones, nor lacking 36 dials relative to older sets, nor the increased rarity system]
I like characters with high AVs, and I like characters with high manueverability. I prefer offense to defense, and I prefer individual turn tactics over multi-turn strategy, and therefore like pieces that support the former gameplay style. I also like to minimnize chance, and like anything that helps to minimize chance, and make the battle more about skill vs. skill than skill vs. chance. I like specially released figures and maps and whatnot, and lament only how unavailable most of them are to non-tournament players.
I like Giants and double based figures, and disliked only that they cost twice as much as a normal figure, without being worth twice as much as a normal figure in FF, and I don't want to see the mechanic "abused" in the form of sticking random characters on random vehicles, ala FF Hawkeye or the Robot, just to make them double-base worthy. I like DC. I like Marvel. I'd like to have as many of both as I could afford to get.
Most things are like that. Note that history books generally record periods of strife and disfunction, not the dozens of years of peace that tend to fall between them.
In short, I like much more than I dislike, generally speaking, otherwise why would I bother to participate in the community? I only express my dislikes in an effort to minimize their occurances.
I like comics. I like being able to play a game in which comic characters that I enjoy can fight it out, particularly when I can put both DC and Marvel characters on the same field. I like the general map structure, and the flexibility of their dial designs. Do I think the Heroclix system is perfect? No, but it's a far sight better than anything else currently on the market, isn't it?
I hope they don't either, but considering the complexity of the current gameplay environment, I'd say any comments I might make could only be a drop in the bucket as far as scaring anyone away goes. I do not intend to cause Wizkids any trouble, and my hope is that through my efforts the game will improve, not suffer, but I cannot think of any alternative way to get my points across.
Hopefully, any comments I make could only help incoming players, as they are intended to improve the game for everyone, including them, and to make their experience entering the game as fun as possible.
Plus, I enjoy a spirited discussion, which accounts for the majority of my posts, even though people tend to remember the more negative posts more (a common psychological tendency).

2: Why do you play?
Please don't think I'm asking you not to play. It's a great game and I'm sure you have your reasons. This is why I'm asking.

I find your comments very negative and wonder how they will affect new players who have just found this site. Hopefully it does not scare them away.

Re: Why I like HeroclixI see where you're coming from, but if I may I'd like to counter one point you made: The HC dials being a flexible system.
Let's say you want to make a new Superman. I will tell you, right now, what his dial will look like: SPD: 10 or higher. AV: 10 or higher. DV: 17 or higher. DAM: 3 or higher. His powers will be as follows: Super Strength, Impervious/Invunerability/Toughness, Charge/HSS, and maybe CCE or RCE. The point is, aside from a little tweaking, that's the regular Superman you're going to see. They may go crazy and give him Plasicity to represent someone obscure he did once, but otherwise he's going to be as I listed. It's simply because all Clix figures must be designed out of the same pool of powers. However, there is another game on the market (which I won't name so as to avoid looking like I'm trying to 'sell something') where each character is given custom skills and powers, and each version of them can be completely different than the last. Under this system, Superman may well look like this: Hit Points: 200 DV: 22 AV: 12 DAM: 30 Powers, you say? Man of Steel: Some sort of damage reducer. Faster than A Speeding Bullet: Something to make him faster. Flight: Duh. You get the idea. So, which seems more flexible? |

Re: Why I like HeroclixYou're incorrect about your comment on psychological tendencies.
People do not tend to remember negative events over positive ones. They tend to remember the exception rather than the rule, aka anecdotal evidence. Therefore if they're remembering your comments, it's likely you may be negative in a crowd of otherwise positive comments. Just as someone like Ro_Gan is known for being positive about anything Claremont related in a crowd of otherwise negative comments. And when it's one vs. everyone else, it's usually not the one that is correct. Feel free to correct yourself now. |
