My deep, dark, Goth heart absolutely craves this piece. He is definitely not meta, but he looks as fun as exploding into a cloud of bats to a Bauhaus song. lol
But seriously, neat dial design, really fun looking but not overpowered. The close combat monsters like this always fall short, so he will be a blast in fun games.
His Sword, on the other hand, will likely see a Ton of more competitive play.
I really want to like Knull, but he's over-reliant on his stealth. Any good ranged primary attacker is going to be able to stealth bust him. He still has good mobility and good damage, but with an 18 DV, he's going to get chewed up without much difficulty. I wish he'd at least get a couple clicks of 19 DV, with a 250 point price tag.
@ArkhamInquirer you aren't wrong. He looks like a really fun piece, but is pretty far from playable in any meta sense. Anyone with a ranged fig worth its salt will blast him to pieces. The lack of regular steal energy doesn't help either, because in almost any tentpole matchup there won't be an easy means of healing him back up while keeping on the offensive.
I think it's easy to assume Knull isn't an absolute godless killing machine when you just look at his dial and stats. Don't forget his 50/50 traited Shape Change, free placement with his Umbrakinesis and traited Stealth. I LOVE this dial. The guy is a real threat, not sure why other clixxers don't see it that way?
Knull would have been a wicked-good brawler as recently as 2018 or possibly even 2019, but with the Power Leap that has been occurring, IMO he would be hard-pressed to make a 250-pt impression on the game. With a little help (TK, Perplex, etc) he could be very effective, but @ 250-pts he should not need help; the fact that he does speaks to the current state of the game. That being said, I'm going to get this beast and Maximum Carnage all over my opponents; assuming I win map choice and avoid phreakin' shooting gallery maps.... ;-}
I would have liked to have seen this figure in play in 2020. Under 2021 rules that give him a chance to remove action tokens from himself (via Willpower) he becomes slightly more menacing. The mobility/reach is impressive for such a high-point value piece. I worry that the uber-Plasticity isn't ideal given the free Obscuring and placement might end up working against Knull if he chooses to free place himself as an escape mechanism. Luckily there is the possibility of healing (for 2 clicks!) so the best bet is to play this figure straight offense.
does anyone know how he will work under new 2021 rules? "obscuring" terrain is no longer a thing. i'm guessing since hindering no longer impedes movement in anyway he'll just get errata'd to use smoke cloud normally... he should fall under the rule of "play as always intended" like those non-colossal colossal stamina figures.
I played Knull at 250 (with 2 FF Moloids and Prime Storm) in the Scott Porter Invitational Modern 300 event. The ruling on his smoke cloud/obscuring was that that he works as is until errata'd (so basically no change). He only went down once to a Secret Six team in top 32, and If he had a better pilot, might have made it further. I'm sold on him at 250...
ERRATA:
THE GOD OF SYMBIOTES: Plasticity. Shape Change, but succeeds on a 4-6. // When Knull KO's an opposing character, after resolutions heal 2 clicks.
UMBRAKINESIS: Stealth. Smoke Cloud as FREE. // FREE: Place Knull in a square of hindering terrain within 4 squares.
