Starting with the basics, some have asked me how to do conversions. The first way is quite easy. Remove the current figure and add something else. (Note, this does make the figure no longer legal for tourney play, but if you want to mix it up for some fun with just your friends, do these simple steps.)
I thought customs were legal in tournaments as long as the base and the dial were not altered in any way.
For instance, I have a custom Arsenal, made prior to Legacy, that used the Green Arrow E base. It is still a legal Green Arrow E! Can this be used in tournaments?

Yes, $37.50 for a Brett Favre card individually numbered to 50. For that reason alone, a Masterpiece figure has no business bringing in over $200, let alone over $300.
Not to be disrespectful, but these are only football cards ;-)
Try buying a 1956 Topps Mickey Mantle on E-bay. Right now, there is one up for auction. 27 bidders so far, and the highest bid is $2,077.00 dollars. And there is still 3 days left!!! I expect this card to go for at least $3,000.00 dollars!
Or, how about that Honus Wagner card that an E-Bay bidder bought for $1,265,000.00 dollars!!!
I don't hink the master piece figures could ever come close to they likes of the the stuff you see at the Golden Demon competition. Plastic figs just don't turn out as nice as metal ones. Nor do they have as much detail.
As far as prices. I love capitalism. Any thing is worth as much as someone will pay you for it. No more, no less.
That's what is great bout ebay. Real time value appraisal. If a master piece fig was worth more than that, then someone would have paid more.
All warfare is based on deception. Hence when able to attack we must seem unable. When we are near we must make the enemy believe we are far away when far away we must make him believe we are near. Feign disorder, and crush him. Sun Tzu

The Mantle card sold a fraction of it's book value. And single sales of the Honus Wagner card, while recorded, are generally not accepted as book value since there are approximately only 6 left in existence. Which actually supports my statements... there are far fewer of them around than there are Masterpiece figures, so you would expect them to command a high price. Most sports cards that are limited to 50 in existence sell for a mere pittance when compared to their book value. Ocassionally, you will get the freak collector that has to have every single card of a player or cards from a particular set, that will drive up the purchase price. And that's what may have happened with the Masterpiece figures, but to say the high price is due solely to the limited number, isn't telling you the whole story because 50 isn't really that limited anymore.
In my day, we didn't have Heroclix. If you were being attacked by Superman with a 3d dumpster, you just had to hope you could outrun him.
I know a ton of people that buy cases, and just cant fathom why they would spend $250 knowing they arent gonna get the whole set. Especially considering you can buy the whole set by singles for well under $200.
I am sorry but I have to disagree with this statement,
With the recent legacy set, I bought packs and didnt have much luck, only 3 uniques in 28 packs
Ares, promethius and red robin, I also had a purple ares that I traded for a purple ultraman and a sinestro of krouger
So i then bought singles, but it will cost over 200 for a complete set,
I paid:
40 for green lantern
35 for flash
15 for zorn
15 for mongul
10 for a r/e/v set of batman
3 for a r/e/v set of sinestro
15 for hawkman
18 for wonder woman
15 for oracle
so im up to 160 and if i was to buy the others
ares 30ish
red robin 15ish
promethius 15ish
ultraman 20ish
steel 10ish
hush 10ish
now im up to 260 and you still are missing all the R/E/Vs with 2 exceptions so for the rest of the R/E/Vs lets say you pay 40 dollars so congrats for 300 dollars you have a complete set of singles but you missed out on all super rares you can get in cases,
point being its still expensive to buy singles and the games value is very high now, which is one of the reasons i like it so much, the greeen lantern would not be as special to me if it onyl cost 5 bucks

I used to share your philosophy, but after people began buying "toilet artwork" (that would be art and sculpture where toilets are used) for hundreds of thousands of dollars, I changed to the idea that there are just stupid people out there and that they in no way determine the worth of something.
ok, as a painter, i have to say that while jen's work is amazing, she doesn't have nearly the fan following that heroclix does. and that means that the demand for an original jennifer haley one of a kind just isn't as high as a 1 in 50 heroclick of a very popular character.
i sell painted figure frequently, and my painted figures generally go for around 15.00. are my paintjobs worth more than that? mybe. but if the market is low then i don't make 400.00 for a single one of a kind figure.
no matter how many awards i have or have not won.
and the advice for conversions was great for beginners...like the article mentioned.
no where was it ever implied that this was an advanced class or the like.

Thanks 2ndchildhood,
As I stated when I started AC, I would try to mix it up and do columns for all different players. So, this one was for the beginners. Down the road, I'm planning one that will challenge my skills to the limit of converting (and we'll see what happens.)
To the comment that Max wants his gimmick back, I am very aware its a copy of I, Max. Look back I think to either AC #3 or 4, but this column is done just like I, Max for a reason. I don't have plans on changing it any time soon, but I will never say never.
And finally, if you disagree with me, that's great. The point to my column is to get you all thinking and talking. If everyone agreed with every post made at this site, it would be probably the worst site for any game, bar none. Dialogue that comes from friendly conflict can only make the game, and the community better. I use my "Ultimates is Weak Sauce" as an example of my judgement being questioned, and then reconsidering my stance on that set after the dialogue/conflict that came from it. I also earned my first warning points at that time, so yeah, debates can get over the top. But, there is no reason to ever get that aggrivated over Heroclix. At the end of the day, its just a game, and I'm just a contributor.
Peace to you all, get your votes in for the repaint project. Deadline is tomorrow night, 10pm CST.
The Frontman
Winner of his very first Marquee tournament this weekend. How sweet it is.
I liked most of your views, and I partially agree with you on the Gama issue. I wanted the Galactus piece myself and got one. However, I have to compare a Heroclix booster to those put out by other game companies. For a while now Wizkids has been notorious for putting out too many boosters with duplicated figures in them. And it continues to get worse from what I see. When they are selling three or four figures in a booster and two of them are constantly copies of each other (even the same experience level) on a regular basis, they don't deserve to be rewarded for this. The corollation per booster in everything they sell has become ridiculous.
The last three boosters I or anyone I know has bought of either of the newest sets (Mutant Mayhem and Legacy), all of them had an exact copy of an included figure in the same booster. One was a Wild Child, the last was the Enchantress. I can't remember the other, but the point is the same. Duplicated figures and cards being sold in the same booster doesn't deserve being rewarded when other companies (although priced higher) have boosters containing the same or more figures per booster without any duplication at all and without mistakes regarding the cards put in with them. If the figures have stat cards that go with them, they never seem to be wrong in their corollation. Yet, they have more of a chance of being wrong than Wizkids should since these other boosters contain more figures and cards than Wizkids does. This isn't just limited to Heroclix, but all of their game lines. Whereas, the other companies I'm referring to don't seem to have this problem. There's nothing more disgusting to a customer than to buy a booster and get a lame figure, then have it copied in the very same pack. Even though these figures can be traded, others don't want what they are getting duplicated in their boosters as well.
Wizkids doesn't have the market cornered on pre-painted miniature games any longer, although they tend to act like they do. As a result, quality seems to be an expendable thing with them as well as their customer base. They need to pick it up and get a clue.
