Figured I'd start. Havn't posted as much as I uesd to, as the ads were mesing with my WebTV, but in this short window of opprtunity I'll run my mouth. LOL!
Best Book:
Ultimate Spider-Man
Just got done reading Warriors, and I haven't had this much fun and childhood memories surfacing in a long time. Not everyone love Bendis, but if there is one thing the man knows, it is Spider-Man. Plis Bgely thrwing in slight artistic tributes to original artists was awesome. Moon Knight showed signs of Don Perlin's use of B&W, and Elektra was looking much harder facially. Like Miller used to draw her. It's the little things that make a comic tick.
Best Mini:
Two way tie between MK: Strange and The Question.
Best Indy Book:
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
So of course the cancelled it. Hopefully just resting until her ne game comes out.
Heroes of the year:
DC:
Male: The Question
Female: Wonder Woman
Team: Birds of Prey
Marvel:
Male: Ultimate Moon Knight
Female: Elektra (In the Imperfects mini.)
Team: Fantastic Four (Tie between Regular and MK)
Indy:
Male: The Doctor (WHO's 8th regeneration had his swan song in The Flood.)
Female: Witchblade
Team: Wildcats (Yeah DC owns them now, but we'll go with their roots. Besides, there weren't any other good Indy teams this year.
The Best:
The retro 70's revival over at Marvel. The Bronze Age was truly the Marvel Age, and all those great long too ignored characters have returned. And for the better.
The Worst:
Infinite (Oh Lord here we go again!) Crisis. For the love of all that's holy! Just have faith in your characters and make the writers work with each other. Stop resetting everything every five years.
In spite of all that though. Wonder Woman has become hands down, DC's best book.
Biggest Disappointment:
Top Cow (temporarily I hope) shelving Lara Croft. This had become my most favorite book with high octane action and tongue in cheek humour. And as far as Indy titles go, her sales were fine. Hopefully TC is just keeping a low profile until the DC wirlwind dies down, and is also hoping absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Here's hoping Lara and The Darkness return soon.
Biggest Delight:
Ultimate Moon Knight! My all time favorite Marvel hero returned with a twist. At first I'm thinking why is he not Jake when driving the cab, but then Bendis goes and gives us the Ultimate Twist. There is a different and more than kind of disturbing third personality rattling around Spector's head. I won't give it away for those who haven't read it yet.
Favorite Comic Hero Movie:
Elektra
This movie rocked! The only shame is that everyone was so gun shy after Catwoman, that no one went to see this awesome film (and even better in it's Director's Cut). True to the spirit of our tortured heroine, but presented so that those who have never read the comic would get it. Yet strangely enough incorporating more direct comic history tham most other comic films. Everyone who made this film cared, and it showed.
Sorry Sin City. Ultra violence just for the sake of violence no longer amuses me. And for some reason Jessica Alba was a thousand times sexier as Sue Storm.
Batman Begins was way awesome, but to quote Elektra herself from Rise of The Imperfects:
"Oh. You had me at hello."
Can't wait to hear everyone else's. And as always, I'm sure many will think my taste is all in my mouth. LOL!
After every issue, I had to keep picking my jaw up from off the floor. The writing, the artwork, everything in between, this book is a must read for everyone!!!!
Best Mini:
Villians United.
Any book that gets me to care a rats @$$ about those D-list characters, has got to be doing something right.
Heros of the year
DC:
Male: Green Arrow (This mans been everywhere this year)
Female: Wonder Woman (She did what needed to be done, and she accepts responsibility for it)
Team: Birds of Prey/JSA (top notch super heroing)
Marvel:
Male: Daredevil (how he even gets up in the morning, makes him a great hero)
Female: Spider-Woman (She had a breakout year)
Team: Astonishing X-Men (I wish I could of given this to the Ultimates, but all year long they have been dismantled as a team. While that makes for a great story, it does not make for a great team. So heres to the next best thing at Marvel, and thats this Whedon-Jem
The Best:
Infinite (Oh Lord here we go again!) Crisis. What is not to love here? So far this has just been on great, epic story in DC. Now Im not sure if the ending is going to be all that, and part of me believes DC will wuss-out on an ending, but right now Im hooked with the anything-can-and-will-happen storyline!
The Worst:
All-Star Batman. I just cant say enough horrible things about this book, so Im just going to grind my teeth for a bit........ Ok, moving on
Biggest Disappointment:
House of M. It wasnt horrible, but compared to the all in-compassing story going on in DC, House of M was kinda a let down.
Biggest Delight:
Mayby its a sickness, mayby Im a warped SOB, but I really like both the Red Hood and Winter Soldier storylines. Mayby its wrong to bring these characters back, but Ive enjoyed the heck out of it so far
Favorite Comic Hero Movie:
Batman Begins. You guys saw it, and you either liked it or not, so Im not going to ramble about this, other than to say AWSOME MOVIE!
(P.S. Elektra? Are you kidding me? Please say you were.)
Conan - Busiek and Nord have recaptured the Cimmerian and prove sometimes all you need is a good sword and a strong right arm to solve all of life's problems
Best Mini:
Adam Strange: Planet Heist - Art and story were fantastic. Really captured that old Flash Gordon magic
Best Indy Book:
Well duh, Conan
Best Marvel:
Male: Captain America - Brubaker has got Cap back on track
Female: dunno
Team: Thunderbolts
Best DC:
Male: Adam Strange
Female: dunno
Team: JSA
The Best:
Captain America back on track as a super hero. No more liberal love fest with Cap sounding like a Howard Dean mouth piece. Cap is back to heroics, fighting the good fight, and being a soldier.
The Worst:
Avengers: Dissassmbled - cad, that was a horrible storyline. Bendis doesn't seem to know any of the characters, and the gratuitous talking head scenes made ones head spin. Just a rotten storyline.
Biggest Dissapointment:
Iron Man comming out like never. The art is amazing, the plot is not very good, the dialogue is bland, and it takes forever for an issue to come out. Sigh....
Biggest Delight:
Adam Strange: Planet Heist - Flash Gordon is my favorite comic character, and this mini read like a Flash adventure. All the exotic locales, over the top bad guys, and a single man, with no super powers at all, saving the universe almost as an act of will alone. I loved it.
Favorite Comic Movie:
None of them were really great. Batman Begins was good, but badly shot fight scenes, Fantastic Four moved to slowly in parts, and I didn't want to see the rest.
"Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad,
He's so bad, he mak'a me mad
Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad
He's a real cad, Un-fun Dad"
And Elektra the................the movie redefined the words "teh Suck!" It's the worst comic movie I've ever seen, and is only mildly more entertaining than Napolean Dynamite and Attack of the Killer tomatoes.
1/6th of the Brothers Prob. '19-'20 Season: 15-13(8 events) 2 wins, 2nd XDPS PR 9-7, 7th SOC
Best Ongoing:
Gonna go with Young Avengers. The series had me waiting to see what happened next. Great writing. Good concept. The Authority was a close second. Authority Revolution was pretty interesting. All the Authority: Kev books were kinda #### imo though.
Best Mini:
Seven Soldiers: Although it’s hardly mini. Many people have said that VU was great because of what it did for obscure characters. Morrison’s series has done greater things for more obscure characters. I was always surprised by how good these books were.
Best Indy Book:
Invincible – this book takes a tried and true formula and applies some new and exciting twists. Battle Pope was fun too, but that was a reprint. The Ant should get an honorable mention too I spose.
Heroes of the year:
DC:
-Male: Blue Beetle – cmon he died to prove it.
-Female: Batgirl had her moments – Cassie Cane is a cool character. Power Girl was pretty awesome too.
-Team: Justice League Elite. I was gonna say Seven Soldiers, but I picked JLE just to be different. As far as team’s go this one had a great dynamic. The series seemed aborted though.
Marvel:
-Male: Juggernaut – Marvel did more character development for this guy than almost anyone else, and most if it was very subtle. I guess he saw a lot of that development in 04, but he slept w/ She Hulk, that’s gotta count for something.
-Female: I was gonna say She-Hulk, but most of what happened to her was done in ’04. Is it bad that I can’t think of a female Marvel hero who’s stood out this year?
-Team: Supreme Power – I just wish JMS was as good at ending a storyline as he was at starting one.
Indy:
-Male: Battle Pope – cmon he’s the Pope, AND he knows Kung-Fu
-Female: Ant – that artwork is sooooo cheesecake, but I love it.
-Team: Guardians of the Galaxy (from Invincible)
The Best:
D.C. Mini’s – Infinite Crisis, and all it’s tie ins has been fantastic. Seven Soldiers is amazing storytelling (from a writer who I hated on Xmen no less). If we can lump Authority Revolution in here too then I think D.C. pretty much kicked butt on the mini/maxi front.
The Worst:
House of M – the whole thing seemed really shoddy. There was too much left unexplained. There was too many plot holes about Wanda’s motivation in all of this. Magneto’s character is in shambles. They trashed the 2nd Excalibur series to make way for House of M in what seemed like a sparsely planned move.
Biggest Disappointment:
The way the Flash series seemed to dwindle up to, and following Geoff Johns departure.
Biggest Delight:
Jonah Hex relaunch and how great the stories are. I am gonna go melt my face and become a gunslinger.
Favorite Comic Hero Movie:
A History of Violence – simple, good story. Sin City was too noir for me. All the other comic movies, were just that: Comic Movies. Yes, even Batman begins – too many plot holes regarding the technology.
Just a coulple of things, all are Marvel:
Best ongoing:
Cable and Deadpool Hands DOWN! It has the perfect combo of action and humor. It gets me every time DP calls Cannonball, Cannonballs.
Best Male Character: hmmmm. The merc with a mouth DEADPOOL!
Biggest Dissapointment: Ronin being a girl who dresses like a dude. Should have been Deadpool, JK.
Best Comic Movie: OK I said this was all Marvel but Batman Begins which is DC is the top comic movie this year.
Deadpool:SIRYN! AND CANONBALLS!
Cannonball: That's Cannonball you twit.
Deadpool:REALLY? YOU SURE? 'CAUSE I KINDA HAD A HEALTHY DOSE OF RESPECT FOR YOU BEFORE...
Cable & Deadpool
This movie rocked! The only shame is that everyone was so gun shy after Catwoman, that no one went to see this awesome film (and even better in it's Director's Cut). Batman Begins was way awesome, but to quote Elektra herself from Rise of The Imperfects:
"Oh. You had me at hello."
Can't wait to hear everyone else's. And as always, I'm sure many will think my taste is all in my mouth. LOL!
You're kidding, right? "True to the spirit of our tortured heroine"? Last I checked, Jennifer Garner would need to pack on about 30 more pounds of solid muscle before she even BEGAN to look like Elektra. Not to mention the fact that the comic-book Elektra wouldn't have been so damn soft. She'd have killed the kid and her dad, failing Stick's "test." She wouldn't have cried at all, or put herself into a vulnerable position by falling into the arms of some random mark with an accent.
And what's with the damn ninjas exploding into a cloud of gas? This is Elektra, not the Little Mermaid. There should be blood and gore.
And what's with the damn ninjas exploding into a cloud of gas? This is Elektra, not the Little Mermaid. There should be blood and gore.
That's actually the one thing that was kinda accurate comic wise. When the hand first appeared to torment Daredevil they would take these pills to make their bodies desolve so they couldn't be questioned.
Ignore the fact that Stone and all of Stick's other students were bad guys for some reason.
Best Mini:
DC: Villains United, the closest I’ve come to seeing another Suicide Squad, plus awesome characterization.
Marvel: Ghost Rider, the art is amazing and I love the story.
Best Indy Book: B.P.R.D. It’s great stuff with non-stop action.
Heroes of the year:
DC:
Male: Blue Beetle, Ted was always a favorite of mine. He was the essence of a hero, he just wanted to help.
Female: Power Girl, a strong character who’ll definitely be making a big impact soon.
Team: JSA, a lot of golden age goodness along with amazing stories.
Marvel:
Male: Deadpool, he’s too damn funny.
Female: Echo or should I say Ronin. She’ll make an excellent addition to the New Avengers.
Team: Defenders, what a great book and the team is so funny together, plus they can save the hell out of the world.
Indy:
Male: Roger the Homunculus, we’ll miss ya’ buddy.
Female: Liz Sherman, she’s going through hell and back, she’s the only character that could handle it in my opinion though.
Team: B.P.R.D. Really the only Indy besides DMZ I’m reading but it is excellent stuff.
The Best:
The Ultimates and Ultimate Iron Man have kept my heart pumping all year. Although neither received my nomination for best book, team, ect… They were the books that kept a steady pace and never let me down.
The Worst:
House of M. Ugh… Up until the last issue I was continually disappointed. I don’t like Bendis and the whole thing was based on making more money. Cheers, to the House of $.
Biggest Disappointment:
The All Star books. I expected a lot and received nothing. Batman went around killing cops and Superman is in the middle of everything to start out with. I dropped both books within 2 issues.
Biggest Delight:
Deadshots revamp between his awesome mini series and Villains United he’s making a comeback. I’m glad to see my favorite character making a difference.
Favorite Comic Hero Movie:
Batman Begins was amazing, I saw it five times in theaters and that is unbelievable for me.
Sin City was also excellent, but was not a super hero movie.
