Superman II is a fun movie and Superman Returns may have some confusing bits if you haven't seen it but there's a reason I recommend the other two - they really showcase who Superman is and how despite his power, he's more about personality than people realize. Personally, I -like- the fact that Superman isn't doing knockdown drag-out fights despite his powers...it demonstrates responsibility and a reverence for life that despite his awesome abilities he never once considers just using heat vision on Lex.
Speaking of Lex - my favourite villain out there - check out the "Superman" and "Justice League" animated series (the Dini-verse ones). Not only great fun showcasing Superman but Lex continually shows just why he's so gosh-darn-awesome. Lex is also great in "Smallville" and is one of the best reasons to watch the show even through the slumps (though I liked it more when he was struggling against being so dark).
I also enjoyed the documentary "Look! Up in the Sky!" (narrated by Kevin Spacey). Great background on the character and shows the dilemmas they've had shaping him over the years and how he's managed to persevere through it all. It comes with the new "The Ultimate Superman Collection" DVD set which I highly recommend for more Superman than you know how to handle.
How much for the Ultimate DVD Collection? I haven't been able to find it locally.
But when they came out, I did pick up Superman Returns, and Superman II the Donner cut.

I didn't get to buy it for myself so I'm afraid I don't know the price. I'd planned to do so but my girlfriend noticed that every time I saw previews for "Superman Returns" I looked like a moth in the headlight - and that it was one of the only movies to which I willingly went to more than once (once on opening day for 3-D IMAX and then a second time with her when she decided she wanted to see it) - so she pretty much snagged up a copy as soon as it hit shelves. Early Christmas present for me (early because she'd already told me not to go buy it so the "surprise" was kinda' gone and because she was anxious for me to open it). Your best bet may be Amazon if you can't find it locally (I'm pretty sure that's where she got it as it's not "local" around here either...small town in Colorado and all that bit).

Earlier, I thought of something to expand your post about viewing Superman.
"For the Man who Has Everything" was an Alan Moore story (which I mentioned earlier in the Alan Moore: Tales of the DCU trade), which was converted into an Episode of JLU, and can be found on the DVD JLU: Joining Forces.

Or just grab Season 1 of JLU on DVD.
Honestly though, I didn't like it as much as an animated episode...maybe because I felt like it was skimping the source material or something but there was something a bit "off" about the episode (though it was cool to see it done).
Actually all of season 1 of JLU is highly recommended, especially for Superman viewing (though the best part has to be Deadshot in the "Task Force X" episode - the most cold-blooded move in most any show, animated or not. ).

This was a great read, and no person looking see what Superman is about, should go without reading this. I just had the privilege of finishing it. Great Stuff, even with Sale's art.

So rowesbud, how's your Superman search going? I've been wondering how this has been going for you.
I also wanted to add something that I just read, and make a slight correction.
First, the correction:

This issue is actually the third part of a story that ran through Superman #21 and The Adventures of Superman #444.
I haven't read theose two issues, but will by the time this weekend is done.
Also, I just finished reading:
Superman: The Man of Steel Vol.1 This is the mini-series that reintroduced Superman (by starting him from scratch) after Crisis on Infinite Earths, and is written by John Byrne. I was leary of reading this because of some things that I'd heard about changes to Superman's origin. But other than the birthing matrix bit (where Superman was basically a test tube baby), it was actually pretty damn good, and a nice reboot. Every Volume after this however, includes issues of Superman that took place after the reboot, and are from all of his titles at the time. So far there have been 5 volumes published, but this is the only one I've read to date.
On a side note, I was able to pick up the entire Death of Superman run of issues, for $1.00 each.

for me the John Byrne's run in Superman was the best/ He was in Man of Steel, Superman 1-22, and Action Comics 584-600. He also write a lot of Adventures of Superman.
Superman was a lot about Superman, Adventures about Clark and Action was about Team Ups. You have to read Superman 8 (or was 9?) Short story about Luthor. the best story of Luthor ever and only 8 pages! and of course you have to read my favorite story of Superman with/vs? Superboy in Superman 8, Action 591 and Legion of Superheroes 37 and 38.

This is collected in Superman: Man of Steel Vol. 4. I'll be getting it, of course.

go for the seath of superman and then the reign of the supermen, it's great superman reading.
there is another story "for the man who has everything" written by alan moore if I remember right that's very good.
I have to recomend you even if it's not a superman story... crisis in infinite earths...
I started playing heroclix at a shop... the moment my girlfriend got tired and told me "stop telling me I cant atack because you have I-don't-know-what, and I can't move there cause I don't have that thing"...
I have to recomend you even if it's not a superman story... crisis in infinite earths...
I don' think I can recommend this story to anyone looking for quality Superman stories. Too convoluted and confusing, if you ask me. I need to read it again, but for me, this is an overrated event. I respect it's importance, though.

Well, let me offer a compromise - "Crisis on Infinite Earths" the novel. While it's technically a Flash story, it gives enough focus to Superman and avoids a lot of the "confusion" factors (though be warned it also changes a few things) to make either Superman basically the secondary characters of the book.
