You don't use your free action to turn off the TA. Canceling powers is not an action. You can turn off the TA in addition to using whatever action you perform.
Still, that is NOT a way to COUNTER the TA. It is simply canceling the TA. There is a difference. For example, a wild card could copy a TA which has been canceled, but it could not copy one which has been countered.
The terms are NOT ambiguous. In this case the poster introduced some confusion by not using the correct terminology, but the terms themselves, when used correctly, have no ambiguity.
Your example is also incorrect. The section you site was a mistake and has been corrected in the E&C documents.
Ah, I see, a corporate entity such as Wizkids is allowed to make a huge mistake in their annual rulebook (as long as it gets E&C'ed eventually), but I'm not allowed to use an everyday word, like counter, in its normal contextual meaning. Thank you for the clarification, I will henceforth sit on my hands when anyone has a question I am obviously not qualified to answer...
Truly, it is obvious by mistakes such as the ignore/cancel one, that there is some level of ambiguity on certain game terms, even from the company that makes the game! We know this to be true due to the rulings on so many different special powers, BFC, and Feat cards.
In general, there are different definitions for the word counter. There is a specific game term (in general, Outwit), and there is the normal English version (as in to beat, or surpass).
Regardless, the terms counter, cancel, and ignore have all been used loosely by WK itself, and it's easy to see how the game definitions AND the standard English definitions of those words can be used very differently. In the grand scheme of things, this thread is a reminder of how fun the game can be to play, and how painful it can be to play with others at the same time, due to excessive rules debates and hyper-corrections.

It sucks that it happens, but it does. The instance you cite is a mistake made about a new game mechanic. A mistake is unfortunate but understandable. However, the E&C entry actually proves the necessity of knowing the differences. If the terms could be used in this game interchangeably, there'd be no need to have corrected it.

You said it, not me, but that does make perfect sense...not just for you, but for anyone.

Again, within the context of the game these terms have no ambiguity. The ambiguity is only introduced when people bring in a definition of these words other than how the game system has defined it.

Therefore, when discussing this specific game one should use the term specific to this game.

Can you show me any place where they have been used (and remained used) loosely?

That's one perspective. My perspective is that it is painful to play against someone who doesn't want to accept aspects of the rules.
Let's look at this situation. The OP used the term counter to mean something that it doesn't mean within the context of the game. If he learns the definition and differences, as many posters in this thread have tried to show, then in the future he will hopefully be more conscious of the language and receive better answers. I will also hopefully allow him to be able to read the language used and determine the answer to some future questions on his own because of this new understanding. I'm sure that you've heard about teaching a man to fish. With more people who understand the rules, the game becomes easier to play.
