Maybe you're right. Its not like Dick is a detective or ever has a dirty trick (like a box of kryptonite) up his sleeve..
you know im not trying to take s tand on this arguement or whatever, but that example is probably one of the worst out of character examples ive ever seen.
Funny, but you're certainly not the only person who noticed the similarity between Gambit and Longshot. The chromatic differences between the characters aside, they both fill the same niche in the comic, which is very typical for a Claremont-written X-team book. The formula kinda goes like:
Leader with some sort of noted disability/handicap, whether overt or subtle
A take-no-nonsense soldier-type (often acts as a mentor to younger members)
An uncooperative team member
A person who is scared of "losing control" of their powers during a fight
A suave, agile, resourceful, physically attractive type with a mysterious powers/origin
An "action-junkie" sort
Someone who speaks either in British English or non-American accent
Of course, the characteristics can be mixed and overlapped...
This is just a set of my own observations, having read Claremont's X-Books through the 80's, 90's, and present. As good a writer as he can be, he is quite formulaic in how he puts together teams.
