IT'S CLOBBERIN' TIME: The Thing can use Quake. Give the Thing a power action; he can move up to his speed value and then as a free action either (1) use Quake or (2) make a close combat attack.
i know this is kinda a given but for the fact it doesn't say thing must still break away, i am guessing it is inferred?
A good defense will only last for so long, before you must crush your enemies outright!

Yes, as per the regular rules, if he starts his movement next to an opposing figure, he must break away first. Nothing in the special power would alter that.
