Great plot, but even more importantly great style. This movie made me appreciate how important style is in a great film. It's the same reason Iron Man was so awesome.
Being a period piece helped tremendously, and the way they set the film's climax into the Cuban Missile Crisis was brilliant, and worked much better than the Three-Mile Island in Wolverine (mostly because Wolverine was generally bad). The lead actors were fantastic, and the recruited X-Men had a ton of personality as well.
I've heard they're making this into a new trilogy, and that actually really disappoints me because
SPOILER
the things that happened at the end mean any sequels won't be able to capture that same awesome dynamic between Xavier and Magneto.
This to me was the second best comic movie this year. I loved the way they developed Magneto and Xavier's relationship down to their final encounter. I like how they took the mythos and turned it over on its head.

1/6th of the Brothers Prob. '19-'20 Season: 15-13(8 events) 2 wins, 2nd XDPS PR 9-7, 7th SOC
One of the first Hollywood movies in a long time that I really enjoyed watching. Great drama coming from a great source material with just enough bending of comic canon to make the movie its own continuity.
Though didn't like any of the other X-people outside of Kevin Bacon as Shaw, Magneto, and Xavier. Too much wanky teen melodrama.
Not as good as Kickass, but at least this means I'll pay attention to films made by Matthew Vaughn.
Edit: forgot a final score
8.01 out of ten.

Want to see me strip, sing, screw up my lines, and dance for my senior year spring play? Then check this out!
Definitely an enjoyable movie..... I agree with the January jones comments... for a sexpot she wasn't that sexy and the diamond form was.... cheesey. Xavier and Magneto was fantastic and count me in with those who liked it as a period piece too.

Yes, but you're a surrealist! I'm a normal guy!
Gil Zoo Crew or bust!
Have to say I really wasn't looking forward to this but a friend dragged me to it. After watching it. I have to say I was impressed. It was very well done. Not as good as Captain America and Thor but well done. 9 out of 10
The only part I didn't care for was Emma Frost. Her character was undefined and poorly executed. Her primary purpose was to look hot, be the evil telepath, and look hot some more. I've read several complaints about her elsewhere, most of which all seem to blame the actress, January Jones. I disagree. The woman can't deliver a character with meaning if none of her lines have any meaning. Why is she loyal to Shaw and put up with him treating her like a servant? That's not the Emma I remember from the comics.

I agree both that the character was weak and that it looks like a writer/director problem. I liked it a lot otherwise.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
“No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife between the shoulder blades will seriously cramp his style.”
feared the time frame before watching. But ended up liking it very much. The way I saw it, it is not a prequel to the X-men movies and that'S a great thing.
Great storyline and lots of good acrion. I always pictured the 1st class as Cyclops, Beast, Iceman, Angel, and Marvel Girl, but I think X-Men 3 ruined that concept. I think it tied in well with the previous X-men movies and wonder if they are planning a Days of Future Past type storyline. lots of fun to watch
The original X-Men were: Scott, Jean, Hank, Bobby and Warren. To change that is akin to sacrilege. Sorry, that's my philosophy. I'm sure it's probably a good movie, but I'll never see it.
I wish I could chalk it up to that like the new Trek. That is actually a Doc Brown incident. But, X-Men 1st Class isn't that case as I've discovered through all my research into the X-Men movie franchise.
