right now all I can find is that the components you're limited to (tokens, plastic ship models, and card), are limited to what's in the "game box." And that everyone has to agree beforehand if you're using any of the advanced rules, such as including multiple factions in your fleet, mixing ship faction and upgrade factions, or increasing the play area. The fact that there's a section dedicated to limiting playable components makes me think that print and play is not supported with the exception of very specific examples I.E. minefield tokens and admiral's orders.
