I know WK has updated the rules so characters that can be added to another character are now "equipped'; Jocasta, Proteus, Entities, etc. But what are those character classified as? Characters, since that is want the are. Special objects, since they are equipped. Resources, since they are added before the game. What? I am at a loss for where to even find the answer to this question, so thanks in advance for your help.
They are considered equipped items once they are equipped. Before they are equipped (if that's an option) they are, whatever they are. The weapon drop and mutagen ooze are special objects. Jocasta and Eclipso are characters. A heavy object (if you're using John Greycrow from UXM) is a heavy object.
They cease to be those things, however, once they are equipped to a standard character and are only acknowledged as "equipped items."
Which is why we also got this clarification:
[C]A character that becomes equipped to another character is no longer considered a character on your force or for any game effects that refer to “characters”. Other than any effects they provide as an equipped item, they would no longer be able to use any of their other powers or abilities. They would, however, be affected by effects that refer to equipped items.

ok, what part of the horse does that leave for me?
Most of my blog restates those postings/items and there are links to the original source material.
Get off the horse!
No, but seriously, you understand the importance of people sticking to the actual wording. I haven't read your blogs (don't break out the torches!) but I would rather a person read the actual clarifications first and then view your blogs as supplementary to bring the picture into focus.
But that's just me. No offense intended.

To be clear, if I have Proteus equipped to, for example, Quicksilver on an X-Men theme team to start the game, I don't lose my theme bonus because he doesn't have the X-Men keyword, right?

Correct, because Proteus is not considered a character when equipped during force build.
Bonus points if you know who said this: "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak
That would be Jayne Cobb. I am a HUGE firefly fan. As a comic book nerd, I couldn't have been happier when they made firefly comics. I have #1 signed by Nathan Filian 😀
