I have a quick question - it's not specific, and kind of general, but I can make a specific example.
General Question: Do traits activate/stay "in the game" if the character that has the trait is KO'd before the conditions are met to meet the requirements of the trait?
For instance, Baron Strucker from NFAoS.
Quote
HYDRA'S REACH IS WORLDWIDE: When Baron Strucker takes damage from an attack and actions resolve, deal 1 penetrating damage to the attacker and each opposing character within 2 squares of the attacker.
If he is KO'd from an incoming attack, does this trait even trigger? He's no longer on the map/actively a part of the game because he's been KO'd.
To me it reads a bit differently from Mystics, so I was wondering if it triggers anyway, or, due to his KO, it no longer applies?
Thanks in advance.
I can think of a few figs that specify things like "even if the character is removed from play" or similar wording that clearly implies "do the trait's rules" even in the event of a KO. I've just noticed a few more nebulous wordings like the above, though, and am wondering how the proper way to play this interaction should be handled.
I'm not to sure on this but the answer would lie in the definition of "actions resolve"
I would say no because of this:
LOSING GAME EFFECTS (LOST)
[C]Game effects remain a part of the game only as long as the character continues to possess or is able to use the power or ability. If a power or ability is lost (such as from a character being KO'd, the dial no longer showing the power, or the character being placed on the Sideline), all game effects of that power or ability immediately end, but any actions already in progress are resolved normally (including any effects of that action that resolve "after actions resolve"). Any effects with an ongoing duration, such as effects that say “this turn”, or “until (X duration)” also immediately end. Tokens that are placed on characters or character cards for any reason are not considered a game effect.
And this:
[C]A character that is KO’d and/or removed from the game is no longer part of your force for any reason and does not return to your sideline. It can no longer activate, use, or be affected by any game effect unless an effect specifically affects KO’d characters. Any tokens assigned to it or its card are removed. Resolve any effects those tokens may have if applicable. If a game element assigned or attached to a character that is KO'd has no rules for what to do with that game element when that character is KO,d that game element is removed from the game.
Since his power specifies when "actions resolve" it wouldn't trigger because by that time the effect is not in play because he is ko'd.
The other possibility is that it triggers when he takes damage and resolving the action would include resolving his effect, during the time you would resolve the action.
Turns out I wasn't helpful huh? Trapped at home with a sick kid. I'll just sit and wait for the answer with ya.
TRIGGERING - Some game effects “trigger” as a result of a specific event happening (such as a character being hit with an attack, moving adjacent to a character, or occurring during a specific phase of the game). The game effect will use the words “when” or “if” or “each time”, to describe the scenario required to trigger the effect, or the effect will specify the phase the effect triggers on, such as "the beginning of game", "beginning of turn", "end of turn", etc. Triggered effects can be optional and non-optional. A triggered effect that indicates that the character “may” do something, indicates the effect is optional and the controlling player can choose whether or not to resolve the triggered effect. If there is no “may” wording in the effect, then the triggered effect is not optional. A triggered effect will resolve once triggered, even if the power/ability/effect that granted the triggered effect is lost or the power/ability/effect can no longer be used, unless specifically stated otherwise.
Struckers trait is a triggered effect, so its going to resolve even if he is KO'd during the action that triggers it.
However, there's no "blanket rule" for traits. Some will cause ongoing effects, which will go away once the character is KO'd.
