If I am reading this correctly, the original target would no longer be a target?

No, the original target would still be there. Iron Man's power is changing the way Energy Explosion selects other targets. Normally, all adjacent characters would become targets, but the Space Gem changes that to 2 squares and line of fire from the original, as well as applying a sort of Precision Strike effect.

The 'instead' here is referring to EE's original wording, not 'instead of the original targets'.

That is very confusing wording on that power. why not say all characters within 2 squares and line of fire of the original target also become targets?

Instead of saying all OTHER characters become targets INSTEAD...

Other means other than Iron Man.

And "also become targets" as you have suggested would have a different effect. With this version, you could have an adjacent figure who can't have lines of fire drawn to him that would not be targeted, where he would be targeted by normal EE. So your version would be normal EE plus this effect, where they instead swapped the normal version with a new effect.

Let's add another level to the confusion. If you roll over a 10 can you now place all figures up to 8 squares away from their square? That could win a game.

The simplest point of reference is Mind Control. Even when a power states 'a hit character', it is effectively meaning 'all hit characters'.
