I watched Scott Porter's new unboxing videos for Dark Phoenix set. Colossal Retaliation in the upcoming set says.
"FREE: If no other friendly character has been placed this turn..."
Instead of
"FREE: If no other friendly character has used Colossal Retaliation..."
Since both say
"...place character such they can make their attack..."(paraphrasing)

Now, if I have multiple figures with at least one from Dark Phoenix set. And I don't have to place the older version in different square(s) than it was in before the activation of the FREE action. It probably still counts as being placed so I could not use the other figure's Colossal Retaliation in the same turn, correct?

Correct. You still have to place them, even if you're choosing to place them in the same squares they currently occupy.

And that takes a little bit away from the ability. You can't use it if another ability or power was used to "place a character" during your turn.

True to a point, but it just makes you do CR before other stuff. TK and carry are the main standard effects that come to mind for placing so it's not limiting too much in the scheme of things.
