I am extremely jubilant!Praise the lord!Woohoo!Wahahah!Because I am a sadist and I like seeing Wizkids losing customers! :D And it's cool to see people throw away their collections and wasting their $$. >:D Boy,am I evil!
Originally posted by Arsenal-Wolf Excuse me, but some of us don't have enough money to keep buy whole new armies every single year. So far I've spent ~2,000 on my current stuff (factoring in unit sales to cover expenses). I DO NOT have enough to invest in another base set/expasions in the future. There are other things that take priority. These changes effectively kill any chance for me to participate in any future sanctione events.
lemme clear up what I was saying. I'm a poor out of state college student. beggers can't be choosers. what I buy, I keep. Singles are too annoying to get for lowly me.
WHY SHOULD I WORRY about participating in future tournies if I have fun w/ playing casual w/ my friends?
You know, you only need 3 boosters of the latest set to play in the newer tournies. I buy at MOST 2 boosters a month... 4 during the summer when I have a job.
people here are so #### greedy and scrubby. casual is an alien word for ya'll
I share your sentiment, but your post was a tad bit out of line. We don't need the flame war.
We cannot make the other side come to our way of thinking, (they either won't, can't or don't want to) and they will not sway our side.
I also am a poor college student, father, husband, and meager peeon where I work. I get about 10 boosters a set over three months. I trade, and play what I can win LE wise.
I do not see the doom and gloom, in fact I'm very interested to see where wizkids will take this game. I want
OMNI MECHS
MECH w/ move and shoot
respectable artillery that is not a game breaker
no more tank drop
aerospace fighters for straffing runs.
New SE"s
New Faction abilities
But I don't want a 40 page FAQ, and a ROW that is completely worthless. I don't want to see specific units Banned because they are too powerful. I'd rather see a changing evolvoing metagame.
On an aside, does anyone remember when the metagame was TURTLING, and INFANT SWARM? The metagame has changed dramatically, and will keep changing (I just like where it is going)
Glad you both think a friend of mine is greedy.
Ohh three boosters will let you play the game all right. Yup just well enough to lose every time have no hope of actually threatening players with your army.
I have to post here for my friend he is the one who got me started in this game and I have long since far surpassed him.
He has 1 box of counterassualt. He has 1 box of Liao incursion.
He is a kid who wants to win and can if he has some decent units.
His best unit is Erin Johnston. Good unit. Dark age. Bye Bye.
The entire rest of his army is retired when this happens.
How well do you think a kid who doesn't have an allowance and actually had to get a booster for christmas will be able to compete with his own units against people who field even a few boosters worth of units in their army.
Watch out for his Pheonix hawk, HL Uller, thumper artillery army. Makes my knees weak.
This was never about helping new and poor players. This is about money. The kind of people who can talk about how they like a game which forces out those who have older units and cannot afford new ones make me sick.
He knows about this retirement and I am going to get him as much support as I can so he can win some nice LE's to trade with. He also can have every non Liao LE I win. I will support him as much as I can but he doesn't want charity. He wants to win under his own power from his own resources. I don't see this happening should his best units go the way of the Dodo as far as tournament play is concerned.
But just so you know I loath people like you.
It woud help if I knew who you were talking about. If it is me, you obviously don't understand my POV.
There are some inequaties that cannot be dealt with. Age is one of them. If your friend wants to play, he can. He can earn money like everyone under 16 has had to do (I did it, and most people here did it.) As for the boosters he has, well lets see how to make it cheaper. he could work part time for the local game store (off the books) in exchange for boosters, could buy from online at 6 a booster, could be friends with someone who works at the venue, and get them to buy the boosters w/ employee discounts.
There are many people who love to help out newbies, and younger players. I have given away more armies than I can count to newbies, and I regularly give pieces awya that are not my faction.
Here is the thing you seem to be missing. Your friend w/ his limited resources is in a competative bind. he cannot field a winnable army easily because he doesn't have the pieces right? Now imagine this with say 4 more sets out, how the heck will he ever compete with people who have kenny m, Arnis, DF donar, Rusty Cooper, Stephani's zeus, or the Arrow 4 armies of doom? He won't ever have that chance. By limiting what EVERYONE can use for a competative environment, it limits the playing field for EVERYONE. Will there still be the ebaywarriors? yes. Will there still be metagame cheese? yes. Will your friend have an easier time of staying in the game? YES. because everyone will have access to the same pieces.
As for his best pieces going the way of the dodo, yes those sets will be retired. but does your venue offer unrestricted events? Talk to your BM, and see if your venue will set up weekly unrestricted events, talk to all the players and have everyone pony up $2.00 to buy a booster. Open the booster, winner chooses first, fellowship chooses next, etc... down the line until it's over.
And lets look at what you just wrote. Your friend has 1 booster of Li, and 1 booster of Ca. Do you really think he has any COMPETATIVE chance right now?
The only thing set retirement does is limit what can be played in competative environments. Not in friendly games, nor in unrestricted events, and hopefully not in campaign events (as cmd sterling has offered as a compromise)
As for your loathing. Keep it. don't need it, nor deserve it.
And now, I have to say this!
I keep hearing people spouting off about re-releases, and so forth. THAT mis money grubbing. WHY would I buy something that I already have? Please, do NOT rerun that arguement. It is getting old. Let's just kill this thread, and then collect, play, or freaking QUIT! One way or the other, I will still play, I just probably won't be as happy, now as I don't have many opponents, as they have mostly been run off from my game!
FACT! People are mad and quitting. All of this posturing does nothing! I think I need to kill my subscription to this thread, as it is going nowhere. Thank you to those of you who just repeat the same old line!
Adorabilly, I think you have posted too much, as have I. I don't dislike you, I just disagree with you.
Looter, There are many of us who really understand the problem that your friend has and are trying to get WizKids to also understand. A chill runs up my spine when anyone uses the words "buy", "buy", "buy" as a solution.
I wouldn't mind retirement very much if they would actually have the game in working condition for ANY legnth of time. For example, they had fixed first strike; then they introduced the DF ATV's which can set up and fire into anyone's deployment zone. They had ALMOST fixed artillery (Kenneth combined with Krystyn was still a problem) when out pops the SS arrow iv. Charge got fixed, to some extent; but "tank drop" still remains-although with the SS arrow IV problem formations of vehicles are not a good idea right now. I just wish we could have a whole season with stable rules and pieces to see if the game is really good or not.
Having been a gamer since Gary Gygax was inventing D and D I feel sort of sorry for WK, or at least I understand their problem. At 450 points players need maybe 20 units to make an army. That's about 4 boosters. If everyone bought just four boosters they could probably not afford to have anyone on permanent staff for Mechwarrior. Its similar to historical miniatures gaming. I use a system which allows for over 200 different armies of the ancient world to fight each other. I own about 20. The problem is that it takes about a year to learn how to play with an army. End result, I don't ever need to buy an army again!
TOPPS is used to a collectable model retailing system. Bring out a new set of cards each year, everyone buys a complete set. And this works, to some extent for mechwarrior for collectors. But there are many players who are not collectors, and they don't have to spend much money on the game at all, just be skilled in evaluating single figures. My prediction is also that once people have 4 expansions their collecting will be limited by shelf space alone.
If anyone from WK is listening, I think the big money after the game is on the market is in accessories. Where is the WK official terrain pack? Where are the official scenario books? Where are the official campaign books? And if you're worried about newbies getting into the game then charge $10 for the LE's at events instead of $5 and make them available. Charge an entry fee for the events.
OK Adorabilly I was actually responding to the guy ahead of you and to a much lesser extant you.
Now as for a kid getting the money for an army, yeah it can be simple. He will do what he has been doing earning money by doing anything he can in the summer. Just like he did last summer and bought quite a bit. Quite a bit of Fire for Effect and Death from Above. He has plenty of infantry has tanks and whatnot and he WAS happy and willing to slowly build up his army and was hoping to get some units this summer. Yeah for WK this is about money. I understand that. I can and was going to pay alot this year for boosters because I like to support games I feel should keep going.
This will certiantly not help my friend. It will not make him get his other friends to play as he had been doing.
WK has just plain lied and some people with disposable income and loud voices want everyone to see their point of veiw that this will somehow level the playing field for new players. Well most players when they are new are simply going to buy just a few units. And in a year they will probably buy alot of very "Cheap" boosters. Then go to try and play in a competitive environment maybe learn tips and make friends only to go home early because the envoy could not let them play with their "Illegal" army.
I am also tired of this set of posts. I think this will be my last on this one.
P.S. The fastest turnaround I have ever witnessed took place last night at my local venue. I went to a demo with my friend from the posts above and he brought two friends. One had money and was going to buy a booster. The other really wanted to get into the game since it had cool plastic war machine warfare. Then my friend showed them how much of his "cool" army was useless in less then a year and explained to his friend with the money that he should buy counterassualt boosters to stay current, he decided to buy a couple of burgers and fries instead and the other friend played a battle and had fun then said too bad he couldn't afford to keep buying units all the time to play like we were in a tournament. We decided it wasn't worth telling him we were just playing for fun. It is not worth the arguement anymore.
I was happy with the game befor WK Anounced the retirment thing O_O it was nicely balanced as much as a game can be and still be fun >_< Then they came out and had to ruin it!
Hell No!
Negatory!
No friggin way!
It'd be a cold day in hell!
You'd have to kiss me first!
Which of the two letters were unclear to you!?
Nada!
Nein!

Hwag!
nooooooooo!
In answer to the question at the beggining of this thread...
I absolutely agree with Wiz kidz
Why? Because the old sets need to be retired for various reasons already mentioned by others in this thread. So your friend can't afford it, so you like the pieces a lot, DEAL WITH IT! I can't afford that many boosters, i have good units and i still lose a lot of the time, and if I'm correct this is the first time i even mentioned it on the forums. I still have fun. That's the point, being a game, MW:DA is fun. The old pieces i have from the to-be-retired-sets will just end up being only used in casual play, which basically means using it to beat my dad. WizKidz is pulling their but out of the bear trap of having to keep producing these units that are only used in cheese and other such tactics. If you really want them to change their minds, get a job there (or impersonate an employee, your choice really) and put in your 2 cents.
And bring on that doom-ninja, I shall best him in honorable combat anyday.

but it did not take the retirement of a whole expansion to fix it. new units took of one of those problems (of course , lack of playtesting caused more problems. so is it the units, or inefficent use of common sense?).
I know it has been said, and yes I am going to say it again, let the older units die out, do not force them to retire.
one of the things that I hate about the new player thing is this one, "the new player can not find the older pieces" yes he can, it just might cost him, a lot. so he can either invest in it or use the more recent, and more powerful units to overcome the older units. of course as an older player I may need to invest in new expansions to counter the new players units, that I might not have needed, if my older units had not been retired. bottom line is as an old player, I will not be able to compete in future games after retirement, without having to keep buying the new expansions, any more than new players can now.
OOHHH NOOO...!!! he can't play in tournaments!!!! oomg... that makes his units USELESSSS> they MUST be good for NOTHING.... casual play??? wtf is that. that sounds like what mom and dad do thursday nights after foreplay righT???
Ya know... I was gunna buy myself a deck of cards.... but after I found out that I couldn't use them in tourney play, I decided not to.... omg. honestly.
As I said before... people here are so greedy... all your old pieces will always be useable.
with the battletech universe progressing theres more than likely gunna be units which just get better and better. In 2 years, people wouldn't even be using base set units. pieces which cost 24 pts in the earlier sets have equivalent pieces which only cost like 14 points in the latests sets....
and Looter, your friend... isn't greedy... he seems normal.
