As I said he cannot play in COMPETITIVE play that is SUPPORTED because outside of the supported play there are no events with players other then myself. Hate to shock your sad little world but there is a very good reason for someone to want to play more then one other person all the time. It might be called a competitive drive. Casual play is easy to do hard to get people to really get in to.

At 10 bucks a pop he is much better served going and having actual fun instead of being a little toad that jumps on posts on an online chat board to make up for the casual play life that he would be relegated to. Hey tell ya what how about You go to an event sit there and tell everyone you can't play them because you are just some poor kid. Yeah you would do that. Hey wait what about those new units at 14 points. Yeah that will happen. The units are fine for their point cost WK just makes some that very much take advantage of the rules in a small category to be the best at what they do. In fact it is a very good sales tactic. If they were to leave the units in the game people would know that they are just reprinting the same garbage with a few gems mixed in to get people to buy more.

Thank you for clarifying who you were responding to.

Secondly, the proposed set retirement is over a year away. 12 months, even at 2 events a month with no increase in wizkids participation that is 24 events for your firend to go to. 24 prize supported events where everything he plays will be legal. That is not counting any venue supported events (if your venue will run them) or any demos.

If you have 4-6 people show up at the wizkids supported events, your friend has 4-6 people to trade with and learn from.

Lets get to the if's.
If wizkids rereleases units from DA, then the units he has will still be usable in competative play w/out him having to repurchase his whole army
If wizkids moves to larger releasees ever 6 months, then you lose 1 set every six months, but gain another. A booster a week and you are still competative (yes, you have to spend money (not flaming but explaining my pov), I spend a booster a week, and have won over 1/2 of all the tourneys i've been in.

Let me appologize before hand if this comes across wrong, I don't mean to sound accusing, just curious. I keep seeing people saying that the set retirement is over a year away for Mechwarrior, yet everything that I have read about this from Wizkids has religiously avoided answering the question of when it will happen (just that it will). So where did you hear that it is over a year away? I was (and still am) expecting it to happen with the Falcon expansion, which puts it at 3-4 months (though it would mean that the base set is the same - thus you could use DA but not FFE or DFA). I was just wondering, is this supposition or has Wizkids came out and given us a date yet. Thanks.

If retirement occurs, I just hope they 'reprint' enough of the old stuff for the newbies so I can use some of the 'old' fun pieces.
For the Repeating History campaign scenario I used:

2x SW Lamprey each with 1x SS mortar squad
Lisabet Wolf
SW J-37 with 2x Fenrir and 1x SS mortar squad
Tora's mob and Tora's zephyr
5x SW Trike squad
3x LI/3x BR/1x DF ATVs.
1x SS Balac

This army was a blast because it used a ton of single use equipment figures and many from the past.
Oh, I came in second and got Fellowship for it too!

Retirement seems unnecessary when diverse and creative campaign scenarios allow old as well as new figures and [specific] strategies to be competitively used.

I am a relatively poor college student myself, but because I enjoy this game so much, I worked around it, often working two jobs along with school, to help me pay for boosters and save money for college/ a car. I have literally thousands of figures, well actually, not that big anymore, as I have sold a ton of them on ebay. I liked playing faction pure, and I liked playing armies that were uncommon; win or lose. Wizkids is now saying that if I want to continue doing that, then I must buy more product. Well, now I am in college, and I do not have time for a job. Guess I am out of luck. I am sure that this will help newbs get in to the game though.

"Hey, what are you guys playing? That looks cool." We have recieved this line nearly every time we play at a popular video rental/ book store. Some even stick around for a bit while we explain mechanics a little.

Now can you imgaine if we told them how much it costs, plus the fact that it cycles out every couple of years? That literally has scared some people away that I have tried to get to play. Yeah, great job guys. You have succesfully scared away another target audience.

The one thing I will give you, is that cycling sets keeps the game from becoming stale, and limits power-creeping to a large degree. However, I would much rather have certain figures "limited" not banned, to keep things from getting out of control. Such as "only one SS Arrow IV may be used in any given army." Therefore, your units are not getting banned, and it keeps the game from devolving in to artillery madeness. I could see the same thing going for Donars, SH Aesirs, things like that.

Also, I see a lot of Liao players giving a thumbs up. Not that that is particularly suspicious or anything. For all I know it could be a large coincidence, but come on, there are positives to this, which I have considered; but far more negatives. That is why I put my bid up for a big fat "NO!" to set retirement.

Ok. Here is how I know it's at least a year away. According to Draddog on the Q&A thread, Falcons Prey will not be a new base set, and nothing is scheduled to be retired until after FP. Falcons Prey is tentatively scheduled for August/september. Now add in another 6 months for another expansion, and that is where I get the over a year away statemetn And it could be in the expansion after that, meaning we could be looking at 18months away... I doubt it, i think it will be the set after FP..

And we do not know the retirement schedule (which you already stated), but we do know it will go in order. Meaning DA will be first, FFE second, DFA third, etc... So we know DA will be retired first, which could happen about February next year. Many people are also using the MK announcement of 1 base and last 3 expaniosns and pulling that to MW, so many people say we will have new base set, FP, CA, and LI so everything else will be retired. WE just don't know that yet.

Back on topic. Adorabilly I thought I heard somewhere they were actually going to retire FFE before DA. I may have heard wrong but if they do and then retire DFA at the same time as DA so the new base set comes up as desired with the three expansions and they start rotating immidatly. But even if not that still puts it at less then a year and when they do put in the new base set then all three would go out at the same time just to establish their new rules. I could be wrong do you remember where they said they would retire them in any set order? Thanks.

Looter. I hate to tell you that you are wrong. You are making an assumption based on little evidence. All we know about set retirement is what is going to happen to MK. Wizkids said they would eventually like to do this to HC and MW. For MK they will retire to 1 base set and last three expansion.

WE do not know what they will do to MW. WE do know it will be after FP (according to draddog, and he hasn't lied to us) That means the set after FP, which should be sometime around January or Feb 2005 at the earliest.

If they follow the example of MK, then we lose DA, FFE, and DFA at once. I do not think we will follow that paradigm. (we might, but I don't think so). I think we might just retire DA first, then do FFE and DFA together on the next expansion. Here is the reason, too many essential figures to retire from each set. To drop 3 MW factions that quickly/without having somthing in place would be catastrophic. These people are not that stupid.

As to what people are hearing... lets see
1. Jordan Wiesman promised such and such (no physical proof, 1 person actually saying they were there....)
2. FP will be the next base set, and everything prior ot LI will be eliminated
3. Wizkids doesn't care about us
4. Wizkids is just after money
5. It's all spin to get money
6. It will not happen because of soooooo much protest

You used that as an example of competitive spirit. I was just inferring from the information posted that you were the one being "Competitive". The fact that you think a video of a cointoss is competitive makes me wonder how you could make it past the cointoss in an NFL game. Sad really...

Back on topic. Actually I was refering to some news I had heard and not to any facts at all. In fact I have heard nothing from the only WK source that matters which is the rule book and FAQ. So I am not really thinking that anything other then mass retirement with the new base set as per MK. Because all this conjecture is really just a debate I doubt that even Draddog notices every single post or even does more than report trends and keep WK PR running.
Actually I am not sure what will happen to all those essential units. But then WK does not really impress me with its balance issue history.
Honestly I think they could easily work a plan into action that always keeps factions on par with one another in just about every aspect. This would have to mean every faction has its strengths and weaknesses of course but that essential units are not left out, and that army size would be similar just to keep up the playability and the different possibilities of the game.
One thing I do know about this game though is that it DOES make money for WK and as a company they are out to keep that source of income stable. If that means they have to work harder then maybe they should do that.
I don't know where I saw Draddog post this but he said that MW as a product line could die out if people were to stop buying. He then proceeded to make comments that some people could take as somehow placing the blame on the consumer. In a capatalist market supply and demand rule. If WK makes a product that is not in demand and they know it what do you think WK should do? Just curious. I cannot find all that many people who are demanding this game anymore. In fact my envoy just lost its satuday slot to play games at all at the local venue. Why because WK products are backstocking and the company has to provide space and attention to its other games which make them money. WK needs to do something.
Maybe retirement is the answer.
But in the now people are disheartened and WK is not trying to please the ones that keep them in business. I do see them looking for some answers in their survey. Maybe more like it could give people heart in WK. That may just be the only thing WK can do.

When it happens i will turn to collecting the rest of my faction and watch others play. But i will not pay money in any way directly to WK.
