____ Cypress sprinted through the forest He clutched at his shoulder and tried to avoid the sharp pain.

____ Inferno, it was him. I can't believe it. He was a hero. Screw Desperado, that monster.

____ He turned at a tree and found himself staring into the barrel of a sniper rifle.

____ "Don't shoot, I'm unarmed." He blurted out.

____ "I was unarmed too, when you came in and burned the place down."

____ "Deadhawk." He stared at the man in the red tattered robes. He was holding the sniper rifle, and he had a brown sack slung over his other shoulder. "Easy. Put down the gun. Lets talk about it."

____ "Okay, you wanna talk? Lets talk about the fact that the last Legion of Exile is still alive and on the island, trying to kill us. But you knew that already, didn't you?"

____ "Yes."

____ "You know he'll have to die."

____ "Great, so lets do it."

____ Deadhawk laughed and kept the rifle aimed at the other man's face. "I said he'll have to die, not that you're going to help. Besides, aren't you supposed to put him in jail or some shlt?"

____ "Well I-"

____ "I found this a few miles from here." He said, dropping the sack to the ground. A polished robotic head rolled out.

____ "It tried to talk all smooth and casual to me, but I knew what it was. It wasn't so smooth when I put a bullet in its head. I guess it's luck just ran out."

____ "It's a robot."

____ "Don't condescend to me, I know what it is better than you do! They're drawn to Inferno, probably because of his strength. They're some sort of warrior cyborgs. Ruthless. Heartless. You'd fit right in."

____ "Look Deadhawk, about what happened-"

____ Slam! The last thing Cypress saw was the butt of the rifle bashing him in the face. He slumped to the ground unconscious.

____ "Shut the hell up." Said Deadhawk. Then he turned his head to an overhead tree. "You wanna carry him?"

____ "Ouuu, can I?" Said Psynox. "Can we put him in the sack too?"

____ "I don't think he'll fit."

____ "Oh, he'll fit."

____ The old man yawned and turned the top burner on. He knew Cherry would insist on preparing his tea, but he didn't need her help. He didn't need anyone's help. They all think that because I'm old, I can't prepare some damn tea. Why, back when I was their age...

____ It then occurred to him that his children were only a year old.

____ The arthritis in his leg was creeping back in again. Probably a storm coming, he thought. He grabbed his cane and meandered back to the recliner.

____ A few hours passed and he woke to a start. Was that a scream? He glanced outside and saw that he was right. The rain was pattering quite heavily, from grey clouds overhead.

____ "Cherry, make sure all the windows are closed," said the old man. He turned to the one beside him and locked it.

____ It was a few minutes later when he realized he hadn't heard the girl's incessant reply. "Cherry, you stupid block of wood, close the windows!"

____ Still there was nothing.

____ "Useless girl, insists on bothering me about tea but when I actually ask her to do something," he mumbled to himself.

____ Outside the door, there was another scream. This one was from a low, male voice.

____ The old man didn't move. "Thunder. Most likely."

____ Then there was a knock on the door.

____ "Go away!" Shouted the old man. "I don't want your fliers!"

____ There was a pause, and then another knock.

____ "Get out of here!" Damn kids.

____ There was a longer pause, and then a pounding on the door. The pounding turned into a banging, a frantic banging.

____ "Stop ruining the varnish!"

____ Silence.

____ The old man waited.

____ Still nothing.

____ "Starting to hear things. I need to sit down." He moved back to the recliner in the living room.

____ The rain from the open window soaked the carpet.

____ I could have sworn I closed that.

____ He closed the window and locked it.

____ Behind him, he heard something scurry.

____ "What, who's there?"

____ He turned and walked towards the kitchen, but there was nothing.

____ "If someone is there, I'm gonna beat you with this cane!"

____ Another sound, back in the living room.

____ The rain from the open window soaked the carpet.

____ "That's it! Whoever's there, show yourself at once!"

____ That was when he felt the fingers running up his back. Next came the fangs.

____ "Cherry..." he mumbled. He felt more tired by the second. "Close the...windows..."




____ The rain had stopped by the time the red man decided to patrol around the edge of the lake. There wasn't much that could surprise him anymore, well except for a floating robotic head. He broke off a branch from a nearby tree and used it to fish the broken head out of the water. Surprisingly, it was still functional.

____ "Someone knocked your block off," he said to the head.

____ A single eye blinked open, and the head started to thrash. "Me gonna bite your face! Come closer! Me vicious boat and you evil salmon! Rarrrh!" The mouth bit, and wiggled and tried to rip through the red man.

____ "Huh. Okay, back in the lake you go then!" The red man threw the head into the air, then swung his massive fist as if it were a baseball bat.

____ Smack! The head went soaring away into the distance. There was a faint plop when it hit the water again.

____ It was a home run.




____ "So, you must be Thrush. I've heard a lot about you."

____ "I am Thrush."

____ "Yeah I got that. Aww, you're such a nice boy aren't you? Always helping people. Wanting to protect them. It really warms the fiery hole where my heart would be."

____ "I am Thrush!" the boy with the tree-branch antlers slowly increased his size to about twenty feet. He stared down at the fiery figure.

____ "Oh. Wow. A really tall tree never seen one of those before. Not very bright though, are you? You're a tree. I'm fire. Do you see where I'm going with this?"

____ "I am Thrush."

____ "I overheard that the reason you say your own name like that, is because of some trauma that happened a few months ago. You lost your best friend and apparently died? But you came back and remembered that your friend is gone and now you can't speak properly. Is that true? Because if so you kind of sound like a wimp."

____ Thrush swung his mighty tree-trunk arms and slammed Inferno into the ground.

____ The fiery figure pushed the tree-boy back. "Guess I hit a nerve. Lets see what else I can hit!" A wave of fire splashed Thrush, igniting his branches and leaves.

____ "I am Thrush!!" Screamed the tree-boy.

____ "Yeah I bet that hurts, doesn't it!? Maybe if your friend hadn't run from me, I wouldn't have tracked you down and lit you on fire! This is what cowards get - ashes for friends!"

____ Another wave and Thrush was aflame.

____ "Tell Cypress I said hello!"

____ The boy with the tree-branch antlers turned and stumbled back, trying to figure out which way the river was. The grass started to burn, and so did a nearby tree. The fire had completely covered him. He fell to his knees and watched as his arms burned right off, and the tree-branches on his head shriveled into ashes. With one final breath, he collapsed against the edge of the forest. Despite the recent rain, the trees still lit on fire.

____ Inferno watched them burn.




____ Cypress woke up tied to a tree. "Are you kidding me right now. Do I have a sign on my back that says, 'please hit me and tie me to things' because this is getting ridiculous."

____ "Better than burning in a fire though, right?" Said Deadhawk, who was standing in front of him next to Psynox.

____ "Clearly you didn't burn to death in a fire, Deadhawk. Come on."

____ "No thanks to you."

____ "Jesus, just tell me what you want so we can finish this already."

____ Deadhawk leaned in. He still had the sniper rifle behind his back, next to his crossbow. "Tell me what you know about The Last Son of Kryptala."

____ Cypress stared at him blankly. "You're kidding."

____ "Ouu puddin, I think he's playin' hard to get," said Psynox.

____ "I said don't call me that!" Shouted Deadhawk. He turned back to the captive. "You know more than you've let on, you always did. Tell me where he is."

____ "How the #### should I know? Did you go crazy again, or what. I bet you're seeing Deadbug too."

____ Deadhawk punched him. "Don't ever say that name to me, you don't get to use that name. I know you're lying. If you didn't know where The Last Son was then you wouldn't be here. Clearly you know what Luthor knew."

____ Cypress still felt a ringing from the punch. A bit of blood pooled around his nose. "Luthor is dead. Who knows what kind of crap he filled your head with before he died."

____ "I know about the four blood monsters."

____ "I don't even know what that is!" Exclaimed Cypress. "The only thing I know about The Last Son is he was supposed to save Kryptala and he never showed up. He disappeared a long time ago, and that's how Desperado was able to take control of the planet. But you know that already."

____ "If that's all you know, then why did you burn Luthor's mansion down? You must have seen the documents strewn about his desk. Luthor knew, and so do you."

____ "I don't know what you're talking about. You're insane."

____ Deadhawk almost punched him again, but something in the far off distance caught his attention.

____ "Is that a fire?"

____ "Sure looks like it."

____ "It's spreading fast."

____ "It's Inferno, you idiot. He's tired of picking us off one by one. He probably lit the forest on fire, and he's going to torch the whole island."

____ Deadhawk continued to stare at the growing fire. "Psynox, lets go check it out."

____ "Wait!" Shouted Cypress.

____ "For what? You said you don't know anything."

____ "You can't just leave me here to die!"

____ "Watch me."

____ Deadhawk and Psynox ran off into the forest.
