this past year we have had card after card that has been banned or broken in some fasion, i understand the whole break some eggs to make omlets, but you can push the envelop without being crazy about it.
did avengers and jla push the envelop? did i even spell envelop right?
i think that as long as ude is proactive about these sorts of things, that banning cards really isn't such a huge deal. it would be nice if RnD could make sure that these insane "broken" cards they design continue to stay common or uncommon. then, no one loses to much money. really, that's what people truly don't want to happen.
when it's all about the money ain't a damn thing funny. some rappin' dude said that once i think.
I'm sorry to interrupt but isn't Nenora the real Problem about Nega Bomb deck? Because isn't this card the one who gives everyone (and mostly) Frankie the Kree affiliation for the Nega Bomb??If you ban Nenora it has a lot less impact on the Metagame and do not weakens a deck such as Herald of Galactus (something that can disgust a lot of player which plays Modern and Silver because of Galactus).
Beside the Attend or Die Nega Bomb Combo, which other ones are so Broken about Frankie Raye that needs to Ban her?
I mean Broken Combo, not what makes a deck look smarter with her in it...
Maybe an errata would be enough: As proposed in an earlier post:
" You may discard a Herald of Galactus Character card rather than pay Frankie Raye's recruit cost. " From here it's a lot more difficult to play her, but she is still playable in a set.
All that would do is at most delay the kill turn by 1, which is still 4 or 5 guaranteed. Nega-Bomb isn't the only problem. There's also that Hala deck listed earlier, and Admiral Galan Kor also being a target of recruiting madness. Nenora just makes the steps easier, but it's still very easy to change it around and Nega-Bomb on 4 or Hala for 50+ damage.
I don't think Frankie is the problem, or at least all of it. As we've noted on this and other threads, Golden Age contains some counters. Silver's where she is expected to run wild like Hulkamania.
UDE went to a block system really fast with this game. That was necessitated by Man of Steel and Web of Spider-Man for the most part not being worth the cardboard they were printed on. It wouldn't have been good for this game's financial health for people to be able to compete at the Pro Circuit without having bought a card since Origins. That was clearly the way we were headed until sets started getting stronger. The early part of this game was dominated by Titans and Curve Sentinels because nothing was anywhere near as good until the Avengers set came out.
To their credit UDE realized this and pushed sets like Infinite Crisis and Heralds back towards the power level of the Origins sets. Legion, at least in the early going, looks like the power level is down a bit. What we need is for the sets to maintain a somewhat consistent power level. If that were to occur long enough than either Modern or Silver could likely go away. Three formats is probably too many for a new player to deal with anyhow. Power creep will always be a necessary evil, but we've had power leap in some cases and a total power outage in others.
Another problem is that we haven't seen more than two sets where the namesake team was the strongest one. The only one I can think of right off hand is the Green Lantern set. If UDE had done what they now admit they should have in team stamping Dr. Light, the GL's wouldn't be the strongest team out of that set. You could make the argument for the Justice League set although it's really the JLI with a few dual team characters mixed in that became competitive.
I am of the hope that World's Finest and Marvel Team-Up will rectify that problem as I think it's the biggest reason this game isn't nipping right at Magic's heels. Lots of comic fans have tried to pick up this game and play Superman, Batman or the X-Men only to find those decks never win. When they ask what they should play they'll hear answers like Squadron Supreme, Checkmate and now some deck with Frankie Raye. If you want to play w/ characters you've never heard of and have no emotional investment in there are about 50 other CCGs you can pick up.
Yes, cards having to be banned isn't a lot of fun. But look at the cards we're friggin' arguing about. Dr. Light, one of the biggest spares in villaindom until the Crisis storyline. Fiddler, Det. Chimp, Frankie Raye? Some of these arguments probably wouldn't be on the table if the broken abilities were given to the right characters. If there was a cool version of Superman w/ a power people complained about, you'd likely get the response: "He's Superman! He should be broken!"
I think Stranger is the problem. JSA doesn't need or play Stranger in its purest form. Only Great Guys plays Stranger, and they can get along without it (Uni-Power, for example). I don't think Frankie is that abusive without Stranger, and Stranger is pretty abusive by himself. I think it's like the whole "We'll ban and eratta every character with cost less than 3 so we don't have to ban Dr. Light" thing that UDE seemed so fond of doing until recently.
I would like to share a meme that me and my friends have been infected with. The belly laughs it causes may save your life.
Every time we open a fortune cookie, we follow it with "in bed". I think I picked it up from Mary Van Tyne or something, but it spreads to other things if you let it.
So, let's play. It might lighten the mood in here.
"I still maintain that Jason Hager is way better than Frankie Raye..."
... in bed!
You can also replace "in bed" with "with an axe" most of the time.
Ive had a problem with frankie since she came out, her evil sister valeria is gone now im hoping frankie gets the axe as well and soon.
why i ##### so much about broken cards is because we keep getting into states of the game like this where there are combos and such running around that mamke the game not fun to play, and we have to get all rilled up and ##### about it until it gets fixed.
and even when we have banning dates that still leaves play time for stuipd crap to exist, that there is a chance could have been avoided with a little more forethought put into costs on cards,
in the last year what have we had,
dr light being erratad to once a turn
the whole fiasco of the fate artifacts on black panther and haveing a 20/20 character on turn 3 possibly, untill unqiueness was "clarified"
fate artifacts + antartic research base
justice league of arkahm
gone but not forgoton enabling combos
the build up to pc LA
maybe people are forgeting how many times players have had to ##### about things this year to get fixed, and im sure im even missing some.
