and yes, my analogy still stands.
How? Your analogy was stating how comic companies would slap on a gimmick cover and sell it for more money side by side the "regular" edition. This is not what's happening with these LEs. WK isn't "selling" the tourney LEs, and are adding the other "super-rare" LEs as an added bonus to regular boosters. You're not paying more for anything and may get something extra out of it.

anyway....
I would probably disagree. You're going to have at least a couple LEs in MM that are probably only offered via tourneys once. If you total the cases of MM out there I'm going to guess that there will probably be just as many or more of the super-rare versions of some LEs. Additionally, those collectors who decide to only continue collecting one set of LEs will probably aim for the actual tourney LEs. If not just for the uniformity.

Exactly.
As for decreased attendance, well...
It's possible. But I personally don't see much of a problem with it in my area. The closest venue I go to almost never has more than two players at a time anyway. Not having special prizes matters very little there, since the players are all casual collectors. The further venues all have a very large, hardcore fan-base that would easily play without any reward whatsoever. So unless things are radically different in hair10's neck of the woods, I absolutely see no problems with this setup. Furthermore, the extra category of figures means that hard-core collectors should keep prices and trade values up. Where is the downfall?
3 per case is practically nothing, when you consider that:
1. There are 8 uniques in a case
2. there are 12 uniques in a set
3. Buying one case equals enough Uniques to have/trade for 2/3 of the uniques for the set.
4. There are 3 Super-rares in a case
5. There are 20 (maybe more) Super-rares in a set.
6. Buying one case equals enough Super-rares to have/trade for approximately 1/7th of the super-rares for the set.
You have to buy approximately 4 or 5 times as many boosters to get enough super-rares to trade for a complete set as you would to get enough uniques to trade for a complete set.
They are going to be waaaay harder to get than Uniques.
(PS: I'm not complaining at all, I'm just making the point to people who think they won't be any more expensive than uniques, that they are actually super-rare and are going to be hard/expensive to get.)
Come play in a mafia game! Hey! I'm talking to you, Scott Pilgrim!
my point is that the super rare's will be worth more than the average unique, not le's. le's should still be harder to get than super rare's, so i'm not debating that.
now the masterpiece spidey, that's another story. wonder if the odds are one per case, but i doubt it. that should be worth quite a bit
You know, with all this talk of chase and rare figures, it got me thinking. Let's pray that WK doesn't go the way of the sports cards market and start making entire sets that are geared towards higher end collectors. Things like that make me nervous with Topps behind the wheel.
Imagine the LE expansion. New reprints, a la Universe, of 100 previously released LEs. 4 LEs per booster. MSRP $39.99 per booster.

what the deuce????
Not sure if anyone else has anything to this effect, but Snowbird is a shapeshifter. her usual transformations include a wolverine, polar bear and a giant owl. As the wolverine and polar bear, she cannot fly. Earthbound makes perfect sense for her on her second click. She should later gain flying back with her owl form, but as to what she can do power wise is beyond me at that point.

My bad sir, I stand corrected. I must have misread something. For the record, I agree with you that the average super rare will most likely be worth more than the average unique.
and as for the second click for snowbird, i believe it's been confirmed as charge, unless nu tengo intended his light green to be grounded which is very possible as well. come to think of it, i would lean more towards her having grounded to make more sense.

*shudders*
God, I hope no one is listening!
They are already sort of doing this with the masterpiece stuff. These will be ULTRA rare and so far there is slated to be 3. So a completist is going to have some money issues.
Now, I have no control how people play where I am at, but the only people who play, want the LEs. I have only 2-3 people playing now since the LEs that are given out right now are old. They don't care if one is rarer than the other, they want the figures and if they pull them, thewy won't bother playing.
This will hurt the tournament scene in alot of places, especially where people like this go. I've already had 2 venues cancel all events due to no one showing or just 1 guy showing wanting both prizes without playing.
The tournament scene in St. Louis is dying and this won't help much. I really wish it would pick up though.

Not exactly. They aren't selling packs that cost twice as much for a bigger chance at rare stuff. They are just including a small number of very rare items into the normal packages.
And completists get exactly what they deserve, no offense intended

I'd have to say that you just have a problem with your local players. For what it's worth, I lived in the St. Louis area until February of this year, and good games were indeed very hard to come by. Naturally, if the general public is not aware of the game, the only players that come out will be LE hawks. I think that giving small bundles of heroclix away to anyone that runs a demo is a good way to drum up new players, especially ones who won't care about LEs.
However, here in Chicago, interest is still pretty good in several key venues. At those venues, you can expect at the minimum 6 players per event. Not bad, and most of those players play for the fun, not the prizes.
I can understand your viewpoint, especially coming from St. Louis. But I think your problems are not due to LEs.
This is how I view the addition of Super Rare figures.
It is a good thing for players of the game, sort of an attempt to reward them with a LE-style figure if they cannot enter or cannot win or choose not to participate in a tournament. Not everyone should have to, either. The aggressiveness of the tournament scene can be a big deterrent for people, driving them away from the game in more than one way.
On the flip side, there is always Ebay and other secondary market sources, but let's face it. Some of those LEs get ridiculous in price.
As a collector and a player, I first viewed this as an inconvenience. However, I have since changed my mind. What drives me to collect is the thrill of the hunt. To have to have every piece in the game. I have almost completed numerous sets at this point (not counting LEs) and once I finish, There will be little causing me to buy boosters. The luck of the booster is an excitement that I pay 8 dollars for. I think it's well worth the price. All of these additions will help to keep collectors like myself buying the boosters.
As for the LEs given out at tournaments. There is still something special about them that only a handful has thus far pointed out. LEs have the limited edition boxes with them. It makes the pieces more presentable from a collector's aspect. It's more complete. I will still participate in tournaments to try to win a whole LE. And I will remember that the pieces in the boosters are not even LEs at all. They are super rare figures. I will do my best to collect both of them, but I will still hold high the LE, as I did not win this by luck.
With that said, I ask all of you to look at this situation from a positive angle. I know it's not what everyone wants, but it can be something everyone can benefit from if we try to think optimistically about the situation. To the nay-sayers, think back on your initial reaction after reading my words. If you still feel so strongly opposed to this, then so be it. That is your choice to make. But if you can find something you like about this addition, then I'm glad. There's far too much negative about the game all the time. I would like to think that the people here at HCRealms actually like the game that we are all putting our hard earned dollars into. It would seem fruitless to be buying a game we don't like at all, wouldn't it?
