Originally posted by Speedball Leak or no....whatever. I just can't fathom how it is that there are people out there who believe that receiving a spoiler doesn't create a decided advantage. Its like getting to play a golf course then playing against someone who has never laid eyes on the course. Sure, you can still lose if you don't play well but you have such an incredible advantage over your opponent knowing different things about the lay of the course that your knowledge makes it that much more difficult for him to win.
A more apt example would be like playing a golf course twice, and then playing someone who only got to play the golf course once. Who do you think is gonna win? I'm betting the better golfer wins.
Originally posted by stubarnes It's an inside joke actually. One day a mod went in and changed Jeff's pic to the UDE symbol. Jeff went ballistic and stuff, so the administrators had to give him back his Beatdown. It was a great day to be in the Realms.
To be fair, Jeff definitely didn't go ballistic. In this post he expresses what I would call surprise.

Someone changed my Savage Beatdown avatar!
Given that I haven't seen Jeff's voice raise above a moderate speaking tone except when he's been joyfully excited, I have yet to be able to envision him going ballistic.
Or, perhaps, it's just something too fearful to contemplate.

I'm betting that if the golfers are about as skilled as one another, the guy who's played the course twice wins.
We need to get some of the guilty parties' names out here so I know who to punch in the nuts when I see them in Atlanta.
They better have security because I'll happily get tossed from the venue for fu*&ing up a bunch of cheaters.
Bunch of Hohs. You should all be banned from the game.
If you recall, my example was a golfer who played the course once versus a golfer who played the course twice. I doubt there'd be that much difference. Obviously all other things being equal, the guy who played it twice has an advantage, but what kind of an advantage? 60/40? 55/45? 75/25? 51/49?

You're joking right? Look at it, he used an exclamation point and everything. Next you're gonna tell me a player that gets a spoiler two months in advance has no advantage or something. Sheesh.

Ok, misread the example, but the point is still missed. Does one player deserve an advantage here? Why? Just because it's a small advantage doesn't make it an irrelevant one. Let's take team FTN as an example, and call the advantage in question 55/45. God knows how many people play for FTN now, but let's call it 10. Access to the spoiler for your team at 55/45 equals five match wins over day 1 for your team. Assuming you're all competent enough to day 2, and you finish at varied places in the standings, that translates to how much money for you guys? $500? $1000? $3000? If one of your players makes top 8 by one match, and that match was brought about by early access to the spoiler and therefore better deckbuilding, how much is it worth then? $5000? $15000?
Ummm - I wonder if Dalton golfs. I routinely beat golfers with handicaps 4-6 strokes (which is a pretty significant difference) lower than mine on my preferred course even thought they have played the course previously as well. I porbably play one particular course over here 6 to 8 times a year. Most everyone in the area plays it at least 3 times a year because of all the charity scrambles and tourneys, etc.
My skill hasn't improved significantly, so why do I play better? Situational knowledge. I've hit the ball from spots all over that course and I know what my clubs do and what the greens do so from experience I've learned what clubs/swings to use in different situations to get results.
No different in VS. Repeated testing allows one to actually benefit from the experience of learning the optimal play from multitudes of interactions. Intuitive play burns a lot less brain cells. I call BS on this garbage about extra time to playtest not being an advantage.
On a Golden Age note, foreknowledge of the upcoming sets contents and interactions with previous cards could be very lucrative for the recipients of that spoiler. What if the set has obviously fantastic helpers for the X-men under-drop strategy. Getting those Power Nexus and Ultimate Sacrifices cheap right now, would definitely be a benefit.
I agree that no one deserves an advantage but is it really the end of the world? People gain advantages all the time in all sorts of events. At the 1st PC I played Alex Shvartsman on day 1. Now he was a playtester (designer?) of the game originally, he clearly had access to the cards way before I did. Did I cry that it was unfair that he was allowed to play? Did anyone else? I don't think so. Frankly I'm one of the most lazy players on earth and if you gave me the X-Men spoiler last year I prolly still wouldn't have looked at it by now.
As for whether people think I have the spoiler or not (or am arrogant or not), I could really care less. I just think people are blowing this out of proportion and looking at it from very weird viewpoints. The people calling for whoever has the spoiler to be castrated or whatever, I bet 90% of them would have gladly accepted the spoiler and said nothing about it if they were offered it.
Lastly, if I had the spoiler would I really be stupid enough to keep posting on this thread and bringing attention to myself? I'm really not that dumb.
