Venom just took a bite out of him and...he...pulled himself together again. Details are weird, but don't worry, the story sucked so it isn't important.
The best reason to explain his return is that he heard he was going to be in a movie so he pulled himself together.
It took a long while for him to pull himself back together. Meanwhile, he was living seperate lives, including one as a little girl (of all things). But, yeah, the story sucked.
My local shopkeep keeps bringing up the fact that come Mighty Avengers in March, it will not be Tony who is wearing the armor. Based on hints throughout various CW titles (Tony stating he himself might not live through the war, Sandman getting in the cracks of the armor and destroying him from the inside out, etc), James figures it'll be Hank Pym in the armor - based on close ties with Tony and having the tech know-how to operate the gizmos in the suit.
Anyone else have any theories on this?
I heard Tony was going to die. Well, fake his death. Something about a one-shot comic in which he's supposedly killed by a sniper and reading thru it, people lament and such, but at the end, they show he hadn't really died.
I don't know how much of that is really going to happen. It's like the FF special a few months back when it was announced one member would be killed off. They didn't advertise that it was an alternate reality tale. Pisser, that was.
Not having Tony Stark in the Iron Man armor would be the dumbest thing [even for Joey Q] to do since Tony let James Rhodes use the armor years ago.
I happen to like Rhodes as IM. It was different, and helped along the storyline of Tony's drinking problem. I liked Rhodes as War Machine to, at first, till he ditched the original armour. Then, and till now, I didn't like that. I'm still not sure about his work with the Sentinels.
Iron Man is my favorite character in comics and while I love Tony, it's been strongly hinted in New Avengers and Iron Man's own series that he may become the new head of SHIELD. And remember that thanks to Extremus Tony no longer needs to be in the Armour to control it at full capacity. That and he can see through satellites and talk through phones with his mind...I'd hate to see Tony not as Iron Man, but as long as he is still around (and please don't reboot to Issue #1...we don't need volume 5 of Iron Man for a while yet please)

Kid Tony was a sad little fall out of the whole Avengers Crossing line where it was revelaed that Tony was the Avengers traitor who killed off some d-listers and had ben controlled by kang since forvere. So they brought a Kid Tonty from the past to fight and kill old Tony and he was the new Iron man for all of 10 seconde before the Heores rebron storyline where he reverted and was never heard from again, It was explained that Franklin recreated people as he rembered them hence Tony as 40 with a bad heart and Wasp became a human again.

Little girl, huh? I liked that story a lot... when they did it with Clayface on the 90's Batman cartoon. Yeesh.

I've been a little confused by events in New Avengers (the only CW title I read) when we always see Tony as if he was in some seperate room looking at screens, etc, but when his disgruntled employee shut down the armor, then took off the faceplate, there was Tony. Whassup with that?

It's been explained that Mr. Fantastic is afraid he's going to lose everything because he had this one crazy uncle that was a victim to a horrible law and everyone was a jerk who abandoned him. Therefore it's wrong to go up against unjust laws or something... cause his uncle lost?
Basically Miller wants you to believe that at heart Reed Richards is a giant coward who's afraid he's going to lose all of his money to the government if he decides to screw with them on this one... making his friends and family vulnerable.
Of course that doesn't explain why he didn't just take the family and leave the country like Ben. Though i expect he'll end up doing that around the end of Civil War with Sue.

It also doesn't explain why he didn't remember his uncle when he went against the government to stop the recreation of the accident that created the Fantastic Four...

My guess on that is that the remote Ironmen arn't as powerful and or easy to control as if he was in the suit himself. Jarvis is down the Avengers Mansion is in trouble... Tony feels like he has to go himself.

Tony Stark is Iron Man.
The FF is Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny.
Alpha Flight are all Canadians.
Spidey always wears his original union tights.
Clones, any kinds, are a bad story idea.
I gotta disagree with ya, Ro. Shake ups of this kind (if they are done well) are the lifes blood of comics. If you have a title that is to continue ad infinitum, there has to be change.
Iron Spider was an example of good change. It added something new to the character, we all knew that it would be for a short season and it has been a nice breath of fresh air.
The black costume is also a nice bit of change. I look forward to seeing it back in continuity again.
Still, we all know that Spidey will end up in the red and blues eventually. Its just the way of it.
Its just important that such things happen. Otherwise, how can anyone regurgitate the same old stories with the same old villains ad nauseum and claim that it is different 'cause he's in a different suit?

Tony Stark long ago developed the ability to clone himself. Jarvis is the real elderly original Tony Stark (Retconned of course). The current Tony Stark is actually Tony Stark 2.0. It is now time to bring in Tony Stark 3.0, much younger and stronger (due to genetic manipulation after decoding of the human genome), to be Iron Man. That leaves Tony Stark 2.0 to head up S.H.I.E.L.D.
