I'm normally a nice, congenial guy, but the whining about Ulik is ticking me off. If you think Ulik is "useless" you don't really have a clue. If your main attacker is Psy Blasted every single game you play, you seriously need to learn a thing or two about how to block a line of fire. Are you even aware that less than 10% of all figures pack "Exploit Weakness"? Is this really a problem for you?
Ulik remains one of the best one-on-one pieces in the game, costing a fraction of many others, and it's your job as a *cough* "strategist" *cough* to use your other figures to let him do his job.
... and if you don't want to use a strategy, there are plenty of other games that do not require one.
I'd rather play Repulsor Shield. Both are 25 points, and you can't counter or ignore his defense power, so the only thing Fortitude now has to offer is protection against Exploit Weakness.
Ulik has Charge and CCE, making him eligible for Lunge, so he can Charge+Lunge for an opposing figure 8 squares away. How many figures do you think has an 8 square "charge" and exploit weakness? So in a one on one battle the only problem he has is with figures with Psychic Blast. Repulsor Shield removes that problem.
I debated that, but figured he was goign to be up against other bricks, who often have EW-- whereas if he's exposed to ranged attacks (which should be avoidable with good positioning) he's in trouble regardless, as he will get pinged for 1 by all sorts of people. Also, you don't want his charge outwitted.
Why is it so hard for people to understand that this power is written to make Ulik PHYSICALLY strong? Why would that automatically translate to MENTALLY strong? I mean, he's a rock troll, not the brightest bulb on the tree.
Physically beat on him all day long? He likes it! Mentally attack his little rock troll mind? Ehh, not so much.
I agree with this post 100% but for me this logic evolves into a discussion of the Seth era liberal use of powers. If Psychic Blast was only used on characters with actual comic-based psychic powers, then this Ulik would be more than accurate but when characters like Iron Monger, Joker & Merlyn get Psychic Blast then Ulik's dial becomes less accurate.

Ever read The Killing Joke?

Yeah that's the one wear the Hellfire club convince Joker to use his psychic blast on Jean Grey so that she loses control of the Phoenix Force, thereby knocking Chuck into a coma and leaving Jean amnesic.
Yeah, I played Odin this weekend in a tournament and had to fight an Ulik/Rock Troll team... The guy using it wasn't very good, but he was still a bastich to kill. It was 500 points, so I brought some Asgardian Warriors who did most of the work, but Ulik still killed more than his points worth of figures and critted Odin for six after my Impervious and hitting the edge of the map. He is not useless.

I played Ulik yesterday for the first time, and he was a beast with someone (Dr. Strange) defending him. In 3 games, he got psi blasted once, and had his weakness exploited once, but he survived each of those hits and still packed a punch for a while afterwards.
I definitely recommend playing the new BFC if you field him that lets each team destroy an item. Meteorite is not his friend ...
I just heard that Ulik's * special * Defensive power is useless against Psychic Blast and Exploit weakness .
Folks are saying it's a matter of Word-Play , but in the end this new fig. is officially useless now .
The reason why Ulik was given such a short dial and those low defense numbers was because he only takes 1-click regardless of the amount of damage delivered by an opposing figure .
This rule ( which totally disregards Uliks' special power ) reduces him to a generic red rock troll .
One shot from Loki4-Damage with Psychic Blast and a charge attack from Balder and he's now off the map in two attacks . Uliks' special defensive power clearly states : Damage dealt to Ulik is reduced to one .
This power cannot be countered -or- ignored
It's no different that the FCBD Iron Man or Super-Man Prime. All damage is REDUCED to one. It's a damage reducing power, which means it is susceptible to Psychic Blast. No errata was even needed for this fig, as we already know that damage reducers can't reduce Psychic Blast because it's penetrating damage.
However, I totally disagree with your assessment that Ulik is ruined. If played correctly, and just not thrown in the middle of the map to get destroyed, he is still a very brutal and wicked piece.

Don't get upset because someone else has an opinion. Just argue your counter-point. Save getting angry at things that deserve being angry about, like catching your wife in bed with another man, you getting rear-ended by some moron on a cell phone, etc. This is HeroClix, and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

However, I couldn't have said this better myself! Well said my man! Rep given!

In fact, after Norm's ruling on Pulse Wave NOT affecting Ulik beyond his one click of damage -- "Ulik says come! Nova Blast Ulik! Ulik dares you!" -- I'd say his special power is still pretty good.
Another superb post with excellent points reinforcing the comic book accuracy of this figure. Rep given!
Obviously the confusion here stems from the part about Ulik's power not being able to be countered or ignored. Psy Blast/Exploit Weakness doesn't ignore or counter anything though. They simply can't be reduced.
As far as Ulik being ruined goes, the dude has a damage reducing power that would even make Doomsday jealous. I think he'll be just fine.
