Resource makes the team...hands down. Its the stat boosts plain and simple. The stat boosts turn a 150 point character into a 300 point character for the cost of 15 points or whatever.
Honestly stop having resources give stat boosts and they would be alot more pallatible. The issue is the 14 value attack and 20 defenses or whatever.
I don't mind stat boosts WHEN IT'S RELVANT.
Putting Batman's belt on DOES NOT make you a better fighter, or harder to hit. Gaining the Gauntlet does in fact make you more powerful (Thanos wiped out half the galaxy... at the very least, that should amp up Range and Damage!)
I can see the Hammers giving a boost... they are enchanted objects. I just wish they'd have done some for Defense... like 2 of the Charge hammers give +2 to defense, and 2 gave +2 attack or something.
Contrary to popular belief, I do know what I'm doing
There is a reason you never see the Penguin Resource, he is the only balanced and fair one that both gives and takes away from a fig, thus maintaining balance.
Was saying different hammers should give different stats since we got the first one! After using them extensively I'm no longer sure I agree with myself but yes I get your point for sure!

For me I think the issue is not with resources but with relics. All relics should be a free action to pick up (sorry Splitlip). The numbers needed to roll are way to risky. A 6 to pick-up Mjolnir, a 5 or 6 to pick up most? 5-6 is pretty freakin hard. Im not sure if a relic should ever cost more than 8 pts and a resource under 15.
Now, with a response to the OP. The team makes the resource. Ignorant to think otherwise.

This is short sighted. A Bad team with a resource is still a bad team. I good team with a resource uses the two in tandem so that the resource enhances the figure AND the figure enchances the resource.
I feel like resources made it so that a lot more figures become viable "meta" contenders that otherwise would never have reached that level. Not really this past year but look at the year before that's Gencon. There were so many different teams there, it was amazing. Sure they all ran the IG, but I felt it a small price to pay if it made almost every team style and stratagy viable. Because of this, I feel like the resource makes the team.
I usually get a concept of a team and what it's trying to accomplish, then assign a resource to match.
I'm actually glad the hammers all give Attack bonuses. Right now the Book just gives you a major offensive boost, if hammers could also give Defense buffs it would be remarkably more powerful.
Also to the OP: Just a side note, but you can't assign the Book to a team with a Team Base on it.
Imagine a team of 7 figures with, at best, a 10 attack. A best 3 printed damage (on 3 figures). Two have three click of move and attack.
Would you run that at 300 competitively?
Now imagine for 30 more points you could make it so all 7 have a minimum 10 attack, one gets a 13, and everyone has move and attack, willpower and can't have their powers countered?
Resources make so many more figures playable...so...many. It is AWESOME, IMHO.
What we do in life echoes in eternity!
Respect is a given, only disrespect can be earned.

A fair amount of the hammers grant Toughness, which is a huge help to caster type figures with Energy Shield Deflection, allowing them to negate Poison.
Resources, for me, aren't a primary part of my builds in general. Hell, not even a secondary. The last time I used one was an IG prior to NML.
If I have points left over, I may toss a Resource in there. Usually, though, I use the points for another figure.
This is how I wish the game was. However, (and I'm in no way attacking you or criticizing you Thrumble Funk) you won't win. Not if your venue is ultra competitive. There's a reason every major winning team has a resource. So I always play a team with a resource for a serious tournament. That being said, I generally look at figures and see which figures become worth more than their point value (i.e. if you put this hammer on this figure, it has the power equivalent of ~100 point figure for 70 points + a hammer). So I guess you could say I take a resource and throw a team on, but there's a little more too it than that.
There are resources that make teams and resources you have to plan carefully around.
I would argue that the Gauntlet and the Power Plant are tactical resources, the Book is an autopilot resource that Just Makes Things Better, and the Belt is slowly moving from firmly in the latter groyp to closer to the former group, mostly due to the Watch List errata.
The Gauntlet grants a ton of abilities, but you have to carefully plot out which character needs it and what they need from it. If the abilities you want can be achieved in other ways (like replacing the figure with one that has less of what your guy has but also has what you need) then it's a waste.
The Power Plant grants such a specific set of abilities that you need to plot out who benefits frkm them most. Knowing to run ranged guys with abilities complimentary to the rings and what those guys are is a legitimate tactical choice.
Resources with large stat boosts can be plopped on anybody. But the New Belt and apparently the Pheonix Force are techier than that. The Book is just easy. Not that I dislike it.

Well said. I'd like to add a couple comments if I could. As to the Gauntlet and the book you're dead on, I'm not gonna comment on those. As to the belt and Power Plant, you're almost dead on (all my opinion of course). The belt is now much more tactical after the watchlist change, that I agree with. However, I think it's less tactical than the gauntlet. I feel like the belt is more "I have points and this figure could use the stealth and the added utility (no pun intended xD) the belt gives (aka, turn off ta's, occasional boosts, night vision goggles, handcuffs, med kit, smoke pellets, etc)." Which I think is essentially what you're saying but I figured I'd go into a little more detail. As to the Power Plant, you're again right. I'd just like to add that in addition to strong ranged attackers, support pieces such as Astrals, willpower pogs, tkers, etc can benefit from rings such as the Ice Blast, Matter Rearranger, and Black Light.
