My local shop sold me the starter and 10 "expansions" for $100 w/ tax. Not bad. The problem is if I want anything else, they'd have to order it as they aren't carrying it anymore. Thats why I'm not exactly sure what is available for purchase.
I saw in an instructional video a guy that had to roll a lot of dice at one point. Is there a way to get more dice without buying a starter?
Not yet, but soon I hope. I've already had times I needed to borrow dice for attack or defense, and that was before we had secondary weapons doing 10.

They are items limited to 1 per fleet. Some are used by the fleet, some a specific ship. So far we have:
Elite Attack Die - once per turn it can replace any one attack die. Has no blanks, an extra crit, and a double hit.
Command Bar - the set comes with ten token. Before the game you select five. Once per turn you can use one and flip it over - it can;t be used again this game. They can add a die, reroll a roll, set a die to a specific side, or as a free action give a battle-station, evade, scan, or target lock token.
Sideboard - not quite sure what it does. My venues prize support for the month was late, and this was overshadowed by...
Flagship - assigned to a specific ship. Increases three of the four stats, indicates an action that can be used as a free action if the ship can already use it or adds that option to use it if it cannot, and another bonus effect for friendly ships within a certain range. There are four faction specific and on the other side are four independent.
Dominion Fighters - counts as a resource, plays as a ship. No captain assigned, and instead of being given damage cards there is a stack of tokens on the ship card. One token is removed each time the squadron takes damage, no matter how many hits it would take - much like horde tokens, but they don't come back.
Federation Fighters - slightly different stats than the Dominion version, but basically the same.

The default is 100. Most captains are unique, and most ships have a named unique version and an unnamed generic.

I dont think that I will be a completionist for this game. I will probably pick up all of the Federation and Borg stuff though. At some point I will probably buy all of the Attack Wing stuff. Dogfighting sounds intriguing but both seem to have their appeal.
Thanks again. This thread has been more than helpful.
Other than the Romulan ship from the starter and a Bjoran ship I won, I've stuck with Klingon and Federation. Even those I didn't buy everything. I still have plenty of options for playing.
My life has no purpose, no direction, no aim, no meaning, and yet I'm happy. I can't figure it out. What am I doing right?

But I would recommend keeping an eye out for a 2nd starter. Look at Target if you are ever there, sometimes they have them on clearance for $20. Or just drop $26 on gohasting.com right now for one. The dice pack is like $10 or more I think. It's well worth dropping the extra $10-$15 on another starter.
You cannot run multiples of the same named ship or named character. These have a star type thing to indicate they are unique. You can run multiples of the same generic ship and generic crew/captains.
Each ship has a unique named ship card and a non-unique generic card (usually at a cost of 2 less points or so, and has less stats and usually no special power).
