Originally posted by Freeptop . These 'Mechs, which are no longer "unseen" by anyone, are now referred to as "reseen" or "Project Phoenix" (after the source book) 'Mechs.
Just as a small addendum to an otherwise exellent summary. Project Phoenix was the IC fluff text for the redesign project for the first few designs. This caused other companies/factions to start their own 'phoenix' redesign projects.
When did Harmony Gold go under? I didnt think they did. Isnt the Macross series strill going strong? Didnt they JUST release another series or mobie. And then you have the video games...
BTW are the project pheonix techs physical products or downloads of CBA websites?
My local venue had the Project Phoenix TRO until a few days ago - it's a really fun read, and it has cool images of all the variants of each 'Mech type.
But if you want a link to all of it, just PM me and I'll send you the address... I'm not sure the Realms people would like the URL being typed up here.
"As the FedCom Civil War swung into high gear and conflict swept through the Inner Sphere, the need for additional war materials was paramount. However, unlike many companies, which produced new, but expensive BattleMechs, a new upstart company Vicore Industries took a different route. By taking centuries old machines and upgrading both their physical as well as technological capabilities, Vicore almost single handedly started a revolution that provided a relatively cheap means to bring ´new´ BattleMechs to the field commanders desperate for more assets.
Classic BattleTech Technical Readout: Project Phoenix provides descriptions, game statistics and illustrations for twenty-nine classic BattleMechs that have been upgraded both in appearance and technology. Also, for the first time in any technical readout, additional illustrations representing all the variants for every design in the book are also included."
Harmony Gold did not create Macross, they imported it into the US and jammed it together with three other completely unrelated Japanese series to create Robotech.
Which is, shortly, being re-released on DVD with a good remastered cut.
Meanwhile, in Japan, the original creators of Macross are still going strong, and yes, there has been a recent Macross 7 TV/OAV/Video-Game series.
Sun Fang Dougram, the source anime for such classic and well-loved mechs as the Battlemaster, Griffon, Wolverine, and Shadow Hawk, has never to my knowledge been liscenced in the US, but FASA abandoned use of the images from it in favor of their in-house creations along with the Macross images.
I might be wrong, since I didn't actually research this myself, but a friend recently looked up the connection between exosquad and robotech...
afterall, anyone who ever watched exosquad must of wondered how the hell they didn't get sued by harmony gold with the blatant mech designs being copied, as well as the Neo-sapiens being blatant zentraedi ripoffs, albeit all of them on a slightly smaller scale...
When you trace back the corporate connections, Harmony Gold became subsidary of Universal, which in turn put out the Exosquad show... and apparently the timeline between the lawsuit against FASA to remove the "unseen" mech designs was around the same time that Exosquad was being produced, since Universal didn't want any competition or BT getting increased sales instead of their Exosquad toys, etc...
So apparently Harmony Gold is still around, at least in the sense that Universal owns the name, and any licenses and copyrights they had when Universal acquired them... but I don't think they are actively doing anything with them... The robotech re-release DVDs of the series were apparently just licensed off to the production company, but Harmony Gold/Universal still retains the rights...
Once again, a friend of mine got bored and researched this off the web after a discussion we had about harmony gold being jerks for launching the lawsuit and denying us marauders, archers, etc... but then not doing anything with it once they won... I could of forgiven them if they had put out a cool new series with the mechs, but it seemed kind of petty to launch the lawsuit and then not do anything once you won, just deny fasa and cbt fans their classic designs.... but when you add in the Exosquad and Universal angles, it makes a little more sense... so basically this all might be conjecture and basically wrong, since its based off websites, but it does make sense...
