personally I love the randomness that a sealed box tourney gives. besides I think WK would rather sponsor sealed box tournies for the sales they generate off of it.
In the FFE marquee I pulled 2 DF Firestarters, a HL Lego, a Mash, a recovery vehicle, and I think a SC Belona. 0 Art, 0 Transports, No units that could make a formation. As you may imagine I got absolutely RAPED, by a someone playing a BR Lego, Longtom, and other assorted BETTER stuff. It was not pretty. No matter HOW GOOD you are, you are going nowhere if you pull 2 freaking Firestarters and a HL lego type pull. I agree the sets have gotten better, but luck of the draw is very much a part of this stuff.
Actually, you shouldn't complain, that's the fun of it,you pull ####,good luck to you,you pulled good stuff, well, well, that's good! It's the randomness that is fun.

And btw, can someone explain exactly how a Booster Draft tournament works?
A booster draft has everyone getting 3 boosters, but you only open one at a time. You pick the unit out of the box that you want and pass the remaining units to the next player around the table, while recieving the units the previous player passed. Each player then selects one of the 3 units they recieved and passes the last two. Continue on, until every unit has found a home. Rinse and repeat with the next two boosters.
It tends to even out the horrible and spectacular pulls, as you can only keep one unit from the booster you open.
I love booster drafts, I go and pick darkage boosters which I can shake around to the point that you know it has complete #### in it, its always fun watching people be forced to take #### units.
Personally, I would rather take my chances with a random pull in place of I line up my Arrow IVs and you line up your Arrow IVs and we see who gets to go first and who has less shots scatter off target. I find sealed boosters enjoyable, but that is just my opinion.
I like that Nationals is half and half -- the eventual winner has to show that he (or she) can both build an intelligent army and intelligently use a random mixture of stuff that might not usually see competitive play.
I agree that something like a draft would be an improvement in evening out the bad pulls. If there were a vote, I'd vote for that.
i think big tournements such as this should have strategy involved showing that you knoww how to use your figures. there for i think this tournament should be constructed
Alex
I prefer modified rochester myself for a draft format.
everyone opens 1 booster nad places the contents in the middle as a pool. Then one player opens his second booster, and picks from its contents or the pool, and places the unpicked units into the pool. Repeat unitl all units have been drafted.
I hate the old style because the person next to you can really mess up or hurt your game more so then in a rochester
I pulled all #### ...a liao Rifelman.......figured it was over right there.....a bunch of #### infantry.....a SS raider(yuck) and at least on good thing in the form of a SS SunCobra.
It didn't matter though I had no arty, no formations, 1 Vtol only matched my oppenents Vtols. I was pretty much screwed
at 450 i think 1 more booster should be in the whole thing.

I would have given my left arm for a Rifleman...pulled a SC Raider MKII, a H ForrestryMech MOD, and an HL Sun Cobra...got a SS Aesir, an SC Aesir and a BR Garrot for Vehicles. Lastly, I got utter #### for infantry (they don't even bear mentioning here)...I played hard, and made the right tactical moves, but I really couldn't do anything against my opponents...when they pulled good artillery and good mechs, I knew I was in a world of hurt.
The only good thing about the event was that the winner sold me Evan Kurst, so my Liao collection remains complete up to this point. Oh, and my thoughts about the HL Shockwave being a dominant unit in this event were proved correct. 22 Point Defense in a sealed format is pure evil. ^_^

What you pull does matter, simple as that. The players with the less skill and experience can and will beat players better than them in the National Championship this Summer. Is is unavoidable with this type of system. And yes, this could happen anyways (due to the luck of the dice) but this only amplifies the problem.
And if you ask what I mean by better pulls, the answer is simple. Getting units in the same faction for formations is a huge advantage. Also getting high cost Uniques is another huge advantge. Last but not least is getting an assorted arms army. The odds of you winning is greatly increased if you can field Vtols, Artillery, AA Tanks, and Infiltrators all in one army, allowing you to fall back on different stratagies.
So how do you fix this? I have two suggestions:
1) Allow players to bring a certain number of points to couple with what they pull from the boosters, or mabye just one unit (like in the CounterAssault Marquee).
2) Allow players to trade before each round with all the other players still left, to customize their army.
The reason I am so concearned is that Orginis is over 1,000 miles from where I live and I don't want to drive all the way there only to pull something even the best player in the world couldn't even find a away to use. I simply want some insurance against that.
