Yeah, its a convention. You'll need to get into the door, and the tournament is a "side" event to the convention so you'll have to pay entry fee into the tournament. Just like you would at Origins, Gencon, etc.
That's not them being greedy, they're just holding more events than most. I don't know about Origins, but in Philly there was just the 10K, no other PCQ's that I know of (I was there for Yu Yu Hakusho and not VS.) Pastimes only has control of what they charge for the actual tournaments, and that may even be set by UD. The entry fee into the convention is totally on Wizard World.
It doesn't matter if you're there for Yu Yu, VS, Yugi, etc. everyone is having to pay the convention entry fee and then any fees for the tournaments.
I'm just entering the 10K, not the other constructed one. If I don't make top 10, oh well. My goal then is top 20 to get cash, then top 64 to get the card, deck box, shirt, etc.
We were going to play first round in the PCQ but then our pairings got switched around because somebody entered at the last second. At least, I think that was you.
For those that didn't see in the other thread, I managed to eek out a 44th place finish at 3-4, after losing early to 2 of the top 8 (including the Doom/F5).
It was a great experience, and I learned a great deal about the game and what it takes to play in the 'semi-pro' circuit.
