Just FYI: Don't forget that Flying Kick would be legal in Silver Age, as it has been released in the starters (and therefore within the last two years). Same with cards like One-Two Punch, Marvel Team-Up, and the various FF, Doom, GK and LoA reprinted characters...
I have yet to see where anyone talked about the new expansions. Maybe I missed something but he does talk about "DCM" and "MHG" any speculation as to what these sets will be?
DCR = DC Infinite Crisis (confirmed)
MHG = Marvel Heralds of Galactus (speculation)
Back on topic, I agree that this year we may begin to see some reprinted cards so that every team is still represented in Silver Age. Some X-Men in MXM, some Gotham and Arkham in DCR, some Fantastic Four and Doom in MHG. Something like that.
This will be a format without Flame Trap (thankfully), this is true, but also a format with almost no stall or control (no Doom, Mystical Paralysis, Puppet Master, Fizzle, Shimmer, etc). It will also have far fewer out-of-combat tricks (no Roy, Terra, Dr. Light, etc. ) It does seem like Silver Age will be limited to curve decks (though no Curve sents :) ) and Rush decks.
At least until we see X-Men and Infinite Crisis, that is. Perhaps those sets will promote some stall and/or control as well. Still too early to tell.
The problem with "Good players adapt" are numerous. To list a few:
-Players without teams get screwed
-Players who are not creative deck designers but instead good limited players/metagamers get screwed
-There is no real testing ground like in magic with a PTQ season along with a GP season (10k) before the pro tour (circuit), thus there is no way to really judge what everyone's going to play besides the obviously strong archetypes.
I'm all for more formats, but the way R&D handles these new formats is rather distasteful, much like the PC system of 2 formats at one event.
Originally posted by luffy IMO, Savage Beatdown defines GA.
I disagree. Even though SB is arguably the most powerful pump in the game, it's still just a pump. It's not like players have to adapt their deck-building to take SB into account. It's not like the first question a player making a new deck must ask himself is "how do I deal with Savage Beatdown?".
On the other hand, Flame Trap makes whole archetypes all but unplayable. Every time a player makes an off-curve deck, he needs to have a plan for Flame Trap. Flame Trap is like a black hole. Even when you don't see it, its effects are felt throughout the metagame. It inexorably exerts its pull on every deck in GA.
Flame Trap can win games and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat all by itself. I've said it before and I'll say it again, GA is the format that Flame Trap built.
Silver Age will not be a swerve until way down the line... Like until... oh, I don't know, Green Lantern is gone maybe.
Why? Well, you still have mock Sents out there, with Tri-Sent, Mark V, Hounds of Bloody Ahab, but we'll see how it goes. Also, that's the last of the Standard teams common fans are used to. Plus, Dr. Light will be gone (THANK YOU GOD!), and GLEE will be out of our hair as well!
I think it's a good idea, but they shouldn't have THREE formats going all at once. Modern age should be killed, I hate the format because I don't like limited card pools. Also, with a different format at EVERY PC, the metagame gets so much harder to test for.
Well, it will definitely be a format where Titans, Sentinels, TNB, and Common Enemy don't exist. Those are always fun, they just better reprint Flame Trap or something similar to it.
i think that the format should include all 3 at once. kinda like magic. T2, extended and vintage(well now they have 1.5 so meh). its always fun to play extended IMHO(silver age if you will)
