This was my first Nationals event, and it will not be my last. This weekend was amazing for me on multiple levels, mainly the social aspect. I met some absolutely wonderful human beings who I am blessed to call friends now.
Even though I only got to play in the second qualifier and I didn't get the chance to make top 32 I have found an immense amount of confidence in my abilities as a player and team builder. I still have things to learn, but I am more and more convinced that I can become a top caliber player.
General strategy was to control movement with Vibe and Phantom Girl Incaps, then use Superman Enemy to control characters or set Freddy up for a one shot with the UHO. 7 damage with 11 attack and an 11 swing is really devastating.
Game 1:
-Played against JLTW Wonderwoman@200 and SLOSH Starman.
Opened up with an alpha from Wonderwoman with an UHO that concluded with a crit miss. Next turn I swing with my UHO and miss. Eventually Freddy smacked WW for 4, Bizarro smacked her for 3 and Phantom Girl finished the job. He managed to take Bizzaro at some point in those turns. Concluded with Freddy flying across the map, grabbing an UHO and one shotting Starman.
W 295-25
Game 2:
-Best game of the series IMHO. Against SLOSH Helspont@200 and JLTW Sinestro@90.
This game was too close to recollect completely. Vibe helped control the map, but my opponent had excellent spacial awareness and use of Outwit to slowly control Freddy. Managed to kill off Sinestro shortly after losing Phantom Girl and Bizarro. Then it was a game of dancing and tk that led Freddy to finish off Helspont with a 6 damage Exploit Weakness charge. No shape change roll, very likely the game would have ended the other way if it did. Excellent opponent and one of the highlights of the trip.
2 probs and 2 outwits. Nuff' said. Psyched myself out of a really good alpha. Had I taken it, I might have found myself 4-0 and at the table Sunday. Either way I learned a fair deal from this loss and I'm happy and humbled it went the way it did. Opponent had excellent map sense and strong use of the Superman Enemy TA.
L 0-289
Game 4:
-Against JLTW I, Vampire @ 170, JLTW John Constantine. CaptKool was my opponent.
Basically a raw opening board. Double stealth meant no use of SME TA and no harassing with Bizarro. Went in for the kill and got rewarded. Rolled three 7 or betters to hit perplexed up 18 defense Constantine in a row to one shot him with the UHO. Then I danced around I, Vampire trying to set up the perfect kill. At this point I knew I wasn't in and so I decided to go big or go home, and try to take full points. Didn't work and I, Vampire got to do I, Vampire things. Made a friend and saw the dude go on to Top 8 on Sunday. All in all a fun match.
L 90-289
Overall Record: 2-2 675
If I had a shot to make it to day 2 I would have turtled for the win, and hoped to move on. But, it wasn't meant to be, and I still got to meet great people and play in some battle royales the next day.
Outside of the tournament I had the best weekend I had in years. The Heroclix community is everything I wanted it to be and I have an even greater burning desire to place my foot upon it. Got to talk to Alex Avila, and got him to sign some Stargirls for me. Was a blast talking to him about clix for the few minutes we did. Looking forward to playing him one day.
Dave Williams is one of the best guys I have ever met. Me and my crew were without shelter for the Saturday and this guy had such a genuine concern for us. For only meeting the guy twice it was awesome, and I thank God that I have got to meet him. Basically the whole clix community I met are great and caring people.
Talking to Scott from Wizkids, I am so grateful that he took the time to entertain me and my pestering questions and probably overbearing glee for the whole thing. Also, jokes on you bud, Rock of Eternity made top 8. I made the mention that someone with an open mind might be able to abuse some of its edge cases and squeeze through the competition. Much love man. I hope people will find the same things with the Round Table, your enthusiasm for that resource made me fall in love with its concept. Also that Nova sculpt is godlike. Can't wait for Avengers Assemble.
To my opponents who I made friends with I can't wait to see you guys again, hopefully we can all make it to Origins this year. I know that me and my crew will be buckling down and preparing hard for worlds. Even if it is crazy, I'm stoked for it and can't wait to try my hand at this level of competition again.
I had two insanely bad boosters for both pods of qualifiers.
I showed several players what I opened afterwords and they all agreed how truly horrible they were.
In the second pod I again had some horrible boosters (while everyone around me opened pure gold) I then had a horrible ruling go against me (I forgot I could appeal to a higher judge) and I'd still do it again.
For those wondering it was ruled against me that my opponent could Outwit Lex Luthor with a character who did not begin the turn adjacent to him. It cost me the match and my shot at top cut...
Lex Luthor is far from horrible.

WizKids has been running convention events for a decade.
They have had some successes, but generally there is a lot of chaos and mismanagement. Offering criticism seems pointless, to be frank: if they were ever going improve their overall effectiveness they'd have done it by now.
^^THIS^^
You'd have figured that WK would just hire an experienced ROC SQ venue judge team to run their events, since they have no demonstrable skills at event organization, asset allocation, time management, etc.
Dream BIG, but keep the small dreams around just in case...
How did a judge rule against that? How did your opponent even think that that needed to be ruled on? Doesn't Lex specifically state that he can't be outwitted unless its an adjacent character or something???

I think it's cut and dry if dragon put the token on the card!

Nope it was straight up Outwit from 7 squares away from a character who was 7 squares away. The judge said his trait only protected him from being Attacked, not from other powers.
My personal training to never argue with the judge came back to bite me hard. In hindsight I should have argued and I should have remembered to ask for another judge. I didn't and that is on me.

That is correct. He is far from horrible, but he needs at least some support. Something to back him up. The rest of my figures where either total trash or more than 100 points. I didn't open a single fig with Perplex, Prob (other than Sea King), or Outwit beyond Lex. The others were just terrible secondary attackers like Black Lightning. I could have played Lex at 100 just so I could play Killer Frost, but I don't think that would have worked out any better...

You are either arguing with the last self aware person on the internet or a master troll. Either way, I wouldn't waste the effort.
Really? I thought his trolling was rather poor. It is just a very tired rhetoric or repeating the same bad points and poor jokes over and over again. It is rather pedantic if you ask me.
Anyone else notice that if you use the word pedantic to describe someone you yourself are actually being pedantic?

Oh, that Chris. Makes sense.

Yeah, I haven't been impressed with it, either.
