Dormammu's defenses could be a little higher, but look at all that Psychic Blast...and Outwit
Count Nefaria is just good all the way around.
Maybe its the point cost of these two figs that count against them, you can do better for the money nowadays, but they are still pretty awesome. Maybe?
May all your hits be crits!
On the whole, human beings want to be good — but not too good, and not quite all the time. - George Orwell
Both are too pricey and do a poor job being as scary/tough as their comics counterparts.
Nefaria ought to fly, for one thing (both comics-wise and to make him playable).
Dormammu was DOA. I'm one of the bigger fans of Critical Mass I know, but I don't like him.
So not only would I say those don't hold up-- they were never great.
Edit: Looking at the dial, I can see how Nefaria can be helped by feats that came later. But he's still not that great. Better than wehn he debuted, though, I'll give you that.
I'm playing in a 400 pt Leap/Climb themed tourny today and I plan on using Exp Black Cat (Clobberin' Time).
Teaming her with AA Robin so I can keep her stealthed and hold onto the Probability Control as long as possible. Filling out the rest of the team with Lyssa Drak and Green Scar.

I play a lot of themes and have used scads of older figures. They fit niche roles nicely. I tend to use Heroes much more often than villains so with that in mind I still use:
IC:
U Wasp (great with Con-Plan)
HT:
R Huntress
REV Hawk
R Blue Beetle
LE Harley Quinn
CT:
E Black Cat
REV Logan
U Moondragon
XP:
E Beast
REV Silver Samurai
REV LE Viper
LE Elektra
U Sauron
CJ:
EV Wonder Woman
U Amazo
CM:
LE Marrow
E Venom
REV Black Queen
UN:
REV Deadshot
REV Cheshire
EV Killer Frost
REV Cyborg
EV LE Shade
REV Raven
REV Jesse Quick
RE Dr. Fate
EV Black Adam
REV Hal Jordan
U The General
UL:
REV Hellfire Guards
V LE Lizard
LE Callisto
REV Sidewinder
EV LE Black Widow
E LE Hawkeye
EV LE Beast
REV Captain America
To me, these are the old sets. The pre-Feat & BFC sets. Mutant Mayhem starts the middle period, I guess, with the modern age beginning with Avengers.
I use a lot of pieces from the "middle period" which compliment the modern age characters nicely.
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.
Hmmm.. let's see..
My faves, that I think hold up very well, and I still play with distubing regularity are:
Vet Hawk. I use his base for my Marv mod.
R Mandroid Armor
V Blastaar
V Thor
V Sandman
U Moondragon
Le Scientist Supreme
Any of the Ninjas esp. le Electra
V Doc Samson
V Crimson Dynamo and Le Dimitri Bukharin. I play these ALOT, espescially when I front my Russian Armor team.
Indy:
I play 2000ad way more than any clear thinking or capable player probably would. (but I've never been accused of being a clearthinking or capable player anyhoo.)
I field 2000ad at least a couple of times a month for the sheer joy of playing characters I genuinely love. In the past I've taken out some good teams, such as the metalmen (w/ Alloy) and the Invincibles to name a couple. Do they hold up particularly well against the newer HoT figures? Not really. That's why I hope upon hope that NECA decides to redo 2000ad completely and add more characters.
Vet Shi.
Vet Witchblade
rev Dreadnoughts and Silver Dreadnought for my Hydra & Maggia teams.
Vet Ulik
Vet Nebula
Vet Diablo
Vet Umar
Rocket Reds and Dimitri Pushkin for the aformentioned Russian Armor.
All the Ultimates TA pieces seem to hold up well for me
Domino
Vet Skull buster
Alpha Flight pieces
Vet Wildfire
Persuader
Mongul
Lockjaw and alot of other Fantastic Forces pcs. seem to hold up well.
Crimson dynamo, Titanium Man, and their Le versions (more solid playable Russian armor.)
War Machine/Rhodey
to name a few. And Armor Wars is where I'll draw the line at older pieces that I feel hold up well. Or well enough for me.

We're overdue for Wizkids to make Joe on the Lawmaster and other 2000AD characters.

Vet Legacy Sinestro leads my Sinestro Corps teams. That first click is nasty. But I have to admit that since he is 146 pts I would probably trade him out for the Cr version (same exact point cost) if I ever get him, just because of the outfit.
Vet Mysterio- still great for what he does best. Annoy the living crud out of you.
U Despero- Someone else said it but he can still wreck for his points.
Ult Thor- There are other Thor's but he's still the best, IMO.
R/E/V Black Manta- For Manta Men (using Frikkin Laser Beams BM as the real deal), they ROCK! Don't believe me....try it. They just stick around and around!
R Hawk- still the best for his points. Unbelievable piece.
LE Little Sure Shot- PD and 10 range for 15 pts....fantastic
LE Justice Is Served- Ever see your opponents fear a 30 something point piece.....here ya go.
Nobody's mentioned Magog or Red Robin yet, so I'll vote for them.
I'll also put in one for Longshot and V Spoiler, because I like annoying figs with combat reflexes. XD Also, gotta love U Nightcrawler. Amazing back then, still amazing now.
I find i'm now using Nightmare very often, in fact I never used him back when he was originally released!
He is made for Stunning Blow and Knockdown (-2 to my attack?? Hahaha okay sure, down to 12!). Love pairing him up with Dr.Polaris who can running shot in (damage boosted by Enhancement), TK Nightmare into someones face or even heal Nightmare later on.
Any of the cheap stealth outwit pieces or cheap perplex pieces still rock.
V Havok I believe is still one of the cheapest 4 damage pieces around.
Despero from CJ still can clean house.
CJ Amazo, Legacy V Sinestro and a handful of others rock with nanobots for being able to hit their top clicks.
And, as mentioned numerous times, the obscene attack/damage figs still rock with proper support. Magog and TK, for example, demands attention from your opponent if they don't want to see their tentpole disappear.
"I love man for all the potential that he holds, and hate men for how seldom they live up to it"
Dr. Doom V Clobberin' Time - that piece makes it hard for any other Doom to get any love he is a BRICK HOUSE and even with SI Starters great SP still gets dissed in the forums for V CT. I mean a guy that can outwit anywhere on the board no line of sight gets clowned for not being this guy, and with Fortitude he is only better
