I think your missing the point of these Gold Tickets there beacon. These spots arent reserved for those we deem Pro Circuit material (although in most cases they are already), these spots are simply members that we feel best represent VSrealms. Stu and Tamahome are just that. They are active and contribute to the community. Stu created 2 contests thus far that have been huge sucesses. The brought all of the members of this community together. And on top of that, he gave out prizes at his own cost.
This isnt meant to be a popularity contest, but the simple fact of the matter is that we cant very well have a "quiet community member" represent us can we? especially if we have never heard of them.
Sounds like your a bit bitter and its kinda sad to see actually.
Originally posted by beacon who is to say? who are the judges? will the mods abide by the actual results or just give the "pityticket" to their site journalists or friends\girlfriends?
Seems like a cloudy day for quiet community members. Again we worship the outward superstar types and shun the rest. I got into gaming because I was tired of "being picked last" and tired of vying for the attention of the beautiful people. I assumed nerddom (or it assumed me) to segregate my life from the pettyness of being popular, being a follower. It makes my GI tract cringe to think that the administration of this site would subject us to the superficial and demeaning gulag of vying for that which many others have worked very thoroughly for. But it's their site and their contest, their treehouse so I guess they can play favorites, roll up the rope ladder and disclude the uncool kids as they see fit.
and what happens when one of the vsrealms "gimme" players actually gets into a circuit-level match? If their past record is to be considered, the they will more than likely lose due to inability or lack of valid testing. So that's 4 slots of dead money, great job guys.
I wont address your problems, simply I will address on how the winner is picked. It is VOTED by the MEMBERS. Has nothing to do with Mod's friends/girlfriends (I honestly dont know any of the moderators here on a personal level. Anyone can have a journal on here... its not like you have to pay for that feature.
I have played in PCQ's before... stubarnes has played in ... many. Dont think that just because I frequent the board, am an active poster, and I help other members, makes me "dead money." There is no such thing as dead money if you watched the World Series of Poker the last couple of years.
yeah Beacon....I doubt these tickets will get wasted...and I think that the members who are quiet on the boards will be taken into consideration too. I don't get on to post as often as I like but I have been to many big tcg tournaments, performing well in almost all of them. Many people know who I am when I attend them. I am sure that there are many members in the same situation as me-more well known at the tournament scene than on the site itself. I am sure they will get nominated too. I played Stu Barnes at the $10,000 pcq in Philly, and he was not only great competition-but one of the nicest guys I ever met. He deserves the nomination. Same thing for Marc (Tomahome). I can't remember ever playing him but we have have a lot of discussions about the game-he knows what he is doing and also deserves the nomination. I understand that a lot of unknown people will probably nominate each other, but that should be resolved when nominations are done and the actual voting begins.
Beacon does have a point. I know that I won't win the ticket in a million years because even though I am an avid poster and a tournament winning Vs. player, I am just not popular on the site. It's not that many people don't like me (I hope), it's just that not that many people know my name. Stu and Tama have had their name on the front page of this site since as far back as I can remember, whether it be for a tournament report or some kind of contest. I suppose it's not their fault that everyone knows them from the material they put on the site, but it is a bit unfair since not everyone can have their own little contests or articles go up on the front page for all to see.
I don't have a problem with either of them winning. I'm not being bitter or holding a grudge or anything. I'm just posting my take on the other point of view.
In fact I think even if they didn't have their things on the front page that they would probably still be candidates for the ticket since they are nice guys and do a lot for the site regaurdless.

Any given sunday, my friend, any given sunday.

You make a good point Marc, you, as well as Stu, and as well as En-Kur have had buttloads of experince playing this game.....(I, however, have none:p). But, contrary to what has been posted previously, this is also not a "best player on Vs.Realms contest". THis is a contest for the Member who we feel should be besty at representing this site. And I am sure that either of you three would be good role-model's as well as exeptional player's.
However, I do feel that this contest is a little Ill named. The "Golden Ticket" As we all know, refer's to Charlie and the Choclate Factory. There was no poll in choosing Charlie, no "member poll" But, as we all know, fate choose Charlie...not what he did, or what he stood for, or the hardships he had been in...it was sheer luck. And referencing this contest to an event of sheerluck, quiet frankly, makes you feel worse about it and will discorage people from voting.
Why? Because in the "Golden ticket" contest, everyone had a chance, and thee were no exeptions. Therefore, maybe a Representative of Realms poll " would be more suitable of a name, because, as I am seeing so far, no one stands a chance except you three lol(and I am not saying that is a bad thing)
Anywho, that's my long drawn out statment of how this contest is I'll named:p! Anywho, it would be nice to see this contest further down the road as a Random Contest:p!
PS(I think I will eventually be in the Pro tour...but it will probably be the hard way:p)
O, my vote! Umm...I am sorry, but it is a Toss up between Marc and Stu! Sorry you two, but it is just too close!
Please remember that this is onely for ONE of the FOUR 'Golden Tickets'. The other THREE 'tickets' will be selected using different criteria. I definately have no intention of having all the tickets rewarded this way. I can tell you this though ... the SECOND 'Golden Ticket' will handed some time during Origins. I'm not exactly sure how, but it will most likely be tied into one of the Tournaments and/or DC Preview Event.
The things about the Tickets is that while everyone is definately deserving ... it defeats the point of giving it to someone who doesn't have the: a.) Time. b.) Money. c.) Desire to compete at the Professional level.
(bitter, no, just downright upset with a viscous demiglace of disbelief.)
I can't help feeling that the fairness of this "contest" is nonexistant. What is the contest really, who can woo more people? Who can buy enough friends? It's an utter farse of competition.
What about rating? UDE provides ratings for this game, did you know that?
People don't talk about it much- since the subject is hardly a vehicle for emotes or anime references, but what about the 4 highest-rated, non-qualified vsrealms members?
Too rewarding to those who play well? Not rewarding enough to the person with the most visible sigline? I dare not speculate.
Like before, it's their clique, I and those in my position have only to pick our fav friend_of_the_admin- as we've been told to do.
I, for one, don't like the idea of mercy-slots in a game where _most_ of us have to work to get anywhere.
I won't single out any posts or posters, it just seems to me that alot of what these vsrealms celebs do to get their notice is fluff. Example: analysis on 2nd tier concepts- humor posts- esoteric contests with little relevance to serious play- spoiler posts- and the all time fav "what may or may not be in the next set" articles. None of which have any direct effect on player education aside from _gratuitously_ casual play.
If given the choice though, I guess I'd leave your wittle bubble intact- seeing as it's all some people have.
We'll see who's q'ed after origins, hopefully then this silly, horrible idea won't matter.
O! Well that explains everything! I did not know this was one of FOUR! Well then, I am totally fine with this then lol. I was under the impression that this was the only one....my bad:p!
Well, first, I see your Dilemma as a staff. This is after all, the "Pro Tour" and these tickets should go to the one's who will use them the most effectivley. I am also proud of you that you are giving out all Four insome sort of contest form, rather than just hand one to Marc, En-Kur, and Stu, and leaving all of us to fight for the last! Oh, and I am being serious, not sarcastic.
Anywho, good luck in distributing them!

[warning. The following is a spoof] Next On the Golden Ticket, Survivor:Vs. Realms, see which man can last one gruling month lost in the Wilderness that is Lincon, Nebraska. See them fight there way to find technology in order to keep there brains from dying of Bordem. And see them Lie, Cheat and steal there way to the illustrious "Golden Ticket"!
What it comes down to for me is I think if you really deserve a slot at the pro circuit then you will get it. If you have to get it through some lame website contest then you probably don't deserve it, but who really cares? Give the slot to whoever does the most for the community and be done w/ it. Trying to pick the best player or whatever would likely just turn into a popularity contest anyway, so let's just leave it as one. Best of luck to you all, I will get my invite to the pro circuit the old-fashioned way and hope to be paired up multiple times w/ people who got their invite through some popularity contest :).

First, the ratings system is not fully implemented yet. As an example, I placed 6th in Philly and can't find my number anywhere. UDE said they are working on a new system that will be ready sometime soon. Ratings mean nothing now.
Second, they are giving away ONE spot like this. It is their site and they can give it to whoever they want. Hell, they could probably sell them on ebay if they wanted to. You should feel fortunate that they are giving back to the community like this. They are rewarding a member who makes these forums great.
Third, if you are so bitter that you can't get your spot in a free giveaway like this, then you have problems. Go and play in a PCQ and win a spot like most of the rest of us have had to do. If you think your knowledge and skill with the game is so superior to anything on this site, this shouldn't be a problem for you.
