Originally posted by EvilBaby I think one of the really unaddressed issues with the current judging system is that is no where for "new" judges to go to learn a little about player management, tournament organization, and UDE policy. Most of the judges that we have where VS is the first game they've judged get their info either from on the job training or from what coach us old timers can offer. It'd be nice to have a place where they could go to read articles, or check out some tournament reports written up by 10K HJ's and the like.
The vs-judge list has this already. Just not many judges use it anymore like they used to. This is also a high priority issue for me too and will make sure this gets addressed.

I think a lot of judges don't use it now because we tried to use it previously, but because it was moderated a lot of our comments never got distributed to the group only viewed by whoever was moderating the group. I was suprised how many people shared my complaint about the UDE judge forum and how under-utilized it is, by both UDE and the judges.
It is a moderated list but I found that important comments would usually get through. And since the Rules Team has been very quick to responding to issues (like the whole 'defends' thing), it's become less used.
Most of the time... any judging issues I find I bring up here (such as Iceman-6) and there is usually a good response.
Since VSRealms is being revamped, maybe we can persuade the Legendary Donor to add a Judge forum.
EDIT: And Paul Ross' Cerebro articles on Metagame tend to answer quite a few rulings questions.
The thing that I think needs more focus on is not just the rulings knowledge... but player management. I will take a judge with excellent PM skills over rules knowlege any day.
Originally posted by sinjinkarch Some CONSISTANCY in the rules. One card says this...another card reads the same way...but they are played differently. Make up your mind and be consistant.
We're talking about Vs, here, not Yugioh. I know they're by the same company, but Vs doesn't have nearly the consistency problems Yugioh has because all R&D is done in-house.

Better website with a complete demo for EVERY keyword. Also, how to stack effects on top of phases. Like "stacked on top of the recovery phase" or "stacked on top of the draw phase"
I wholeheartedly endorse a better website. I see WotC posts every day or two on 'gamingreport.com', but I only see Vs-related item once every month or two. Getting more information out to more outlets is a good thing.

SLOW DOWN the release of new sets. You are going to flood the market and kill the game. 2 sets per year is more than enough to get the most out of the sets. We don't have time to enjoy each set thoroughly becuase we want to move on to the new set.
I actually think the pace of releases is pretty good. I'm pretty tired of drafting DJL and am looking forward to doing some MXM drafts this week. I don't tend to pay for my boxes (getting them from judging events and such), but from an environment perspective, I think things are pretty good overall.
I would like a push for the Indy mini-sets. Those would be cool.
i would like to see events between PCQs and PCs like state champs
I would like to see team events like 3 vs 3 or 2 headed giants events
Seriously consider making it possable to start constructed PCQs after Sealed PCQs'
I don't know if this is the right place but i think that UDE REALLY needs to re-think their release dates. If you are having a PC event a week before a set is legal for play, you aren't helping the community by not giving us the time to build, test and tweak a deck so that it can preform to its best. How many bad CS builds were there before it dominated the meta. I would also like to see if there is any way to spread out the new sets. i think that 2-3 expansions a year is enough and 4 is just pushing it.
State championships may be hard to pull off in each state, but a regional that leads to nationals may be good.
Team events are long over due. I can proudly say that I was in the finals of versus only real (semi-real) team event!
We need a way to keep the new blood from being hammered down by old pros. In Florida, most of the old pros (sadly, myself included) hog all of the PCQ top eight spots. If there were a consistent event outside of PCQs to attend, like a state or regional tournament scene...then I would not play in PCQs.
As it stands a PCQ is the best, serious competetion that a person can find outside of a PC. 10K events are so sparse that they turn into an annual event in most areas.
Most of these responses are apparently from the more hard-core tournament players so allow me to drop in as a complete newb with a different perspective.
The most important thing this game needs is a new rule book. The Comprehensive Rules are fine for veterans or for rule disputes and tournament play but it is nearly useless for the new player. The rule book that comes with the starters (and is downloadable from the web site) is woefully out of date...it doesn't even MENTION keywords.
I was lucky enough to find this site/forum and some friendly players that helped explain a lot of the keywords but it shouldn't be left to the new player to figure out how the game works...it should be easier for people to get into the game.
The TO in Washington State actually has Oregon, Idaho, and Northern California as well. Needless to say that certain areas are getting a lot more support than others and it is not numbers based. Seattle has no PCQ's scheduled in the next 3 months while Portland has 3. If there are other TO's in the state that can do the job and the one doing it is not doing it at all then they should change TO's. We have a store owner in the area that has a TO rating but is not the TO for the area and runs huge Yu-Gi-O events because the area TO seems to fall short of what the area can support. He *cough* (Shane) *cough* *cough* (owner of Shane's Big League) *cough* has offered to work with the area TO to run the events under the TO's name and guidelines yet the TO wont even seem to consider it.
There should also be a set way to run the Pre-releases. In Seattle they have one huge flight of 50-70 people depending on how many show up and that is it. I get very envious of you that can go and run in 3-4 flights that all have prize support and cards to do it. The X-Men Pre-Release in Seattle was not allowed to run as many rounds as stated in tourny policy cause the Head Judge had to leave at 5:30. What kind of way to run a business is that? I feel if a Judge can't be there for as long as it takes then they should find another judge.
Just for the record I am a Level 1 Judge, Level 1 Player Manager, and Level 1 TO
Dave, Don't know if you can do too much about our situation here in the NorthWest but please at least bring the situation to UDE's attention at the meeting.
Thanks
I will definitely second a better website. As an example of such, see WotC's Magic website - lots of articles by their staff and well known players, fun puzzles and games, official forums. Right now, the VS community just feels disjointed, and I think a better official site that actually gives you news on tournaments and upcoming sets. Would it be so hard to post future set card previews in one place ? I swear, when X-men was coming out, I felt like I had to go to a dozen different sites just to keep up.
I'll back some of what was said too.
- State Championships
- Team PCQ's and $10K's
- A Chicago PC
- More $10K's
I would like to see it made easier for smaller shops to become sanctioned for Hobby League. My shop owner can't be sanctioned because he doesn't have a big enough space per UDE, but he has enough space for at least 30 people and our Hobby League never has more than 10.

I would think that as long as you have room for even 8 people it shouldn't preclude a store from becoming a UDE Tournament account. I think you should have your shop owner re-contact UDE about that.

Okay, I'll have to try that then. Maybe he was referring to YGO before....
