The costume is part of the ongoing wrangling over the Superman rights. Apparently Siegel/Shuster own the costume design (or can make the case that they do), so DC had to change 20% of the costume so as not to violate copyright.
EDIT: That's my understanding at least. I could be a bit off.
That's the understanding that I had as well. The costume had to change enough that it satisfied the lawyers.
What do you hate about the new Superman costume? I ask because this is the one costume that DC was legally required to change.
I hate the high collar, modular armor, lack of undies outside the pants, and red belt...basically, I despise that they've taken away the entire inspiration for the costume (not just his), which was that classic circus acrobat/strongman look, you know, the entire reason that super heroes look the way they do I also hate the shaggy hair.
And I understand on Superman the legally required need for change...but that doesn't mean I have to like it. And I have all kinds of issues with the legal battle itself. The whole thing is a cluster...bomb that has completely disregarded the only thing that's kept Superman alive all these years: his fans.

Amen to that. I had all but written off ever buying any more DC Clix due the DCpU52 costumes. I breathed an enormous sigh of relief at the GAMA DC reveals.

Wait, so DC is allowed to continue to use the iconic costume in animation, but they have to change the costume for comic books?
While I prefer the old costume, the new one makes more sense for a modern time. Having it be an armored look helps explain why he doesn't wind up naked after being blasted with an energy beam or flying through the sun. It's more sci-fi, in a way that an alien -should- look... at least, to modern sensibilities. But even the X-Men stopped wearing the 'black leather' look after a year or two... mostly.
As much as I would love TNMT it wont be they are owned in part by Mirage Studios (an independent comic book not a DC book) and by Nickelodeon.

Well, final day of the GTS. Wiz-kids left yesterday, the poor guy running the GG clix table nearly had a heart attack when I said SS wanted to come home with me... he ran back over and did a count when I walked off.
(There was also a big rukus with the distributor Alliance, but thats a story for later.

Because as advanced a civilization as Krypton was, they couldn't design a fabric that could resist tearing without it looking like armor? Meh, I don't buy that argument at all. But this isn't the first time they tried to change Superman's look. It'll be back to normal soon enough.

Wait, wait, wait...."big rukus with the distributor Alliance,..."? That sounds like a story for now! Does this impact Heroclix in anyway?
My god man, don't just leave us in suspense here!

Given that everything we've seen of Krypton has them designing things that look highly ornamental - their clothing, their architecture, the rocket that fired Clark to Earth - I, personally, find it incredibly hard to believe the one thing they'd be understated on would be the appearance of their cloth.
A little factoid that slipped below the radar for most people at GAMA. The Avengers Movie Iron Man has the VGA keyword. This update brought to you by the Latverian Ministry of Misinformation.

I'm still trying to work out the energy storage capacity of Kryptonian skin cells. Much less the cloth they conceal it with.
