It's a much lighter read than Tolkien, and the tone is more conversational. It's closer to The Hobbit than Lord of the Rings in tone. You could probably breeze through them pretty quickly.

I've often wondered if he has issues going places socially.

Like, say you were at a party at Bud's house. You know a few people, but you don't know everyone. You go inside to the kitchen to grab a brew and see Chris in there.
Now, he's really just another friend of Bud's who is there for the party, but you can't tell me that if you walked into the kitchen and found him standing there that you wouldn't have a moment of panic as your mind races through recent events wondering why you are about to be screwed.
