I'm pretty sure nobody was insulting the show, only the 1992 non-canon really dumb movie. You know, the one with Donald Sutherland as Not-Giles and Pee-Wee Herman as Not-Interesting?

The movie is totally canon. The flashbacks in Becoming made it pretty clear it was close, anyway.
