i love this game. :> its all about establishing that pecking order, isn't it?
in regulation timed events at last years worlds and at this years nationals, i'm 17-0. (constructed)
does that streak count? :>
3-0 faction pure pre-worlds but played all worlds players
4-0 in hth at worlds
2-1 in top 8 at worlds (loss in time shortened game)
5-0 in hth at nationals (15vcs)
3-0 in top 8 at nationals (9vcs)
4-0 in draft at worlds events
and sealed i'm about 75-80% win ratio vs nationals and worlds players.
i don't mean to toot my own horn, but ....
beep! beep! baby. :>

i learned really early that it isn't about being just better than the opponent. if so, dice can still beat you. its about being so much better that you can roll 6's all night and still win. :>
of course, i've wasted so much freakin time thinking and playing this game that i could have had two tangible ph'ds by now... so really, the folly is mine own.
I've NEVER had a win streak more than maybe 5.
I've frequently lost to people under the age of 15.
I've frequently lost to people playing their first game.
I've frequently lost to people who are otherwise winless in a tournament.
I like playing good armies.. I like playing sealed... heck I just like playing... I like becoming a better player... can you be a better player if you just keep winning?
bah besides how do you think corle would do if he had to take a faction pure two go cho drop to worlds... maww haaa haaa... (whoops one of them being the non unique "the only difference is the 14 inch range")
Ever wonder what it must be like to be #2 in your municipal... behind Corle?
I don't have to wonder.
My winning streak has probably never been more than 5 to 8, either.
At least I've beaten Corle. In non-sealed. (I always figured I'd lick him in sealed, first. I rock in sealed, and so many of our other games have been >< that close that the randomness of sealed could easily swing the game in my favor. I haven't played Corle in sealed in who knows how long now, though. Probably not since sometime last year.)
If I actually DID put as much time into this game as Corle... Hmm...
As it is, I couldn't have been bothered to go to Nationals. Better things to do. Like that really rocking party I went to on the Saturday night of Nationals weekend. (:
Although we'd all like to think so, winning isn't everything.
Being a good sport is perhaps more important.
It's so much easier to win when there's stalling or sniping. I arrive keeping my army in a box, not showing anybody (as others are building their armies), until the beginning of the first round.
You can ask every one of my opponents. Not one has ever accused me of stalling (one once accused me of taking 3 minute turns, which is borderline slow).
I keep my mind on the time limit, but it never affects my play style.
Being a good sport is the best part about this game. :) I've made so many friends and allies with this "plastic-crack."
Sure I'm not going to worlds, but I am consulting / training three of the participants. ;)
I honestly don't care about winning streaks or my ranking...yeah its cool but like the say in the old country mechwarrior is 40% strategy and 90% dice rolling
If you lose all the time, does that imply you are a bad player?
If you win all the time, does that imply you are a good player?
I do not think either is NECESARILY true. I consider myself a decent player. Not great, but decent. I lose as often as I win.
Why?
I make choices. I play faction pure, or close to it. I take it easy on newbies, often coaching them and giving them positive chances to learn rather than pummeling them. I play fun armies as often as I chase the plastic crack.
I lose, I win, so what? I have fun. And, I take a lot of fellowship prizes because of my attitude.

Winning isn't everything.
LOL, whenever I get a fellowship prize (effective the past 3 months), I either donate that prize or something other piece of value to whomever I feel deserved the fellowship award.
On unrestricteds, I tend to play more fun armies (while every ranked game I play for blood and cheese), so I have lost on those occasions. :)
on the strategy and dice ... I think it's 50/50. If you can't hit you can't win ... but on the flipside you can sway your odds drastically by out-thinking and out-building your opponent. ;)
Sometimes a long streak might be the result of careful venue/opponent selection. Not too unlike the college student who keeps dropping a class until they ace the 1st test or avoiding a particular instructor, then claims a 4.0 as if they were smarter than the guy who ended up with a 3.3 average that never ducked a class or a professor. I am not talking about any specific person, so don't read too much into what I am saying, but it's a possibility.
Sweet! I'm a "legitimate local champ"! Thanks for the recognition Nighthawk. You are right, I'm not that good, but the competition is pretty lackluster up here. With the exception of a few tournaments last year, we rarely have anyone but the same couple of people each week. But my win streak is legitimate. I haven't lost a match in a really long time. I wouldn't like to challenge any of you serious players though, because it wouldn't be a very good match. My whole area has been out of the metagame for a long time.
