I think Fred Van Lente is a great writer. Action Philosophers and Super-Villain Team-Up M.O.D.O.K.’s 11 were great books. He’s doing a great job working with Greg Pak on Incredible Hercules. I don’t have the budget considerations to be able to buy the multitude of Marvel Adventures and First Classes and such, but I would if I could. I just really dig the guy. He’s got a very natural voice to his writing, and often does a great job of boiling down concepts to the lowest common denominator without robbing it of its importance.
Danny Noonan, our protagonist, is that guy you know that’s too awkward to express the depth of his feelings. Sadie Dawkins, our antagonist, is that girl you know that’s too oblivious to notice. Dan’s your typical 20-something Texas trailer trash who travels to the big city with a guitar and a dream… where he meets the literal girl of his dreams, Sadie. Everything’s cool for a while, till Sadie catches a bullet in the brain.
Hey True Believers, welcome to the first edition of what I hope will be a weekly column here at read/RANT! Since this is a community blog about comics for Versus players, it would be criminal of me not to include some Versus related content. So, once a week, I’m going to break down/review the stories that inspired some of your favorite Versus cards and as an added bonus, for the ones I helped design, I’ll toss in some behind the scenes flavor similar to the Design Diaries Yip and I did back in the day… won’t that be fun?
I'm going to try to post these every Wednesday, from now till Marvel Universe hits the streets. If you guys wanna make a request, a specific storyline or Versus card you'd like me to write about, let me know. I've been working on Versus since Heralds of Galactus, so pretty much anything from that set on is fair game. Once Universe ships, I'll mostly be focusing on the stories that inspired cards from that set... and of course the as-yet-unannounced exclusive set tied to MUN. Anyway, thanks for reading and drop me a line with any suggestions you may have. :squareeye
In 1990, at the height of the “Sandman” upheaval, Neil Gaiman wrote a little book that redefined the world of magic in the DC Universe. Of course, being totally straight edge, and only ten years old, I didn’t read Sandman or The Books of Magic or any of that “goth” crap. Heh. It just didn’t appeal to me… I was still more interested in G.I. Joe and Transformers and teenage ninjas. 18 years later, fully at ease with the “drama club” facet of my personality, I picked up The Books of Magic at my local Borders.
Hardcover Review: Captain America Omnibus Volume 1
by Foilball
Last December, my good friend and fellow read/RANT! reviewer, Mandy, ordered me the Captain America Omnibus for my birthday. It’s the kind of gift only a really good friend would give, and one that is friendly to the crack habit that is comics. Of course, being the super awesome dude I am, I already own the entire run of Captain America, from his first re-appearance in Tales of Suspense to the latest copy that arrives next week. But, Mandy knows I’m also an avid hardcover collector (like all pretendy* comic collectors with money to burn), so the gift was a good choice.
Dudes! Welcome back to Part 4 of Billy & Mandy’s weekly review of Y: The Last Man. In this installment, we will be commenting on issues 37-48, the fourth year of the series. WARNING: There will be spoilers in these articles, so if you don’t want to be spoiled, please read the issues before you read any more. Or, read them along with us! We welcome your comments and hope that you enjoy the show.
