Theater prices bug me, so I've never gone to the theater more than once for any movie, but I might have to finally change that for Civil War. The fight scenes alone made the movie incredible.
Vlad, did you end up seeing it over the weekend?
You aren't far from the Guthrie, are you?
That place is awesome.
It's an old school single screen place, but they've gotten the projector upgrades.
They are generally a first run theater. They had CA:CW opening weekend. We just saw it there last weekend.
You can't beat it.
It's $7 for an evening ticket, $6.25 for a matinee. Concessions are reasonable, too. Popcorn is $3, $4, or $5. Pop is $2.25 for a 20 oz. bottle. We went this weekend and saw Cap with a medium popcorn and a pop for under $20.
The huge bonus is that they have balcony seating. It's only two rows, but it is seldom crowded and you must be 18 or over to sit up there. I find the angle more appealing than looking up at the screen.
I haven't seen any bats in there since college, either. In those days it wasn't uncommon to have the bat shadows fluttering across the screen.
The only complain is that they could stand to upgrade to more comfortable seats, but otherwise we prefer to go there than to the chain cinemas.

Those prices are a lot more reasonable than what I paid, which was 11.20 for one ticket.
And knowing that movie theaters struggle to make money because so much goes to the friggin' mpaa for being able to show the movies, I wonder how some of the less expensive places manage to operate like that.

Well, that is partly why I always get something from their concessions.
Now, I know that the Guthrie was only able to scrape up about half of the $60k they needed for the digital projector. The last half was covered by the college. I'm very happy for this, but knowing that school, I'm sure it is a Faustian bargain in some way.
"Oh, we see that you have the new Dan Brown movie listed in your coming soon section. We don't think that's in the best interest of the community, if you get our meaning."

Bad example, as it is most likely true in this case.

The point is that the college is very conservative and religious.
They are very concerned with keeping that image for them and for the surrounding community, and they push to get what they want. It is incredibly likely that they'd hold the projector donation over the theater in order to control what does and does not get seen in that town.
They'll brag about how there has never been a rape reported on campus.
Now, I know of one which actually did occur on campus and was initially reported as such. Of course, by the time the paperwork was filed and the incident was reported in the press the location of the crime mysteriously moved about 50 feet away to a location no longer on campus.
One of the professors when I was there would tell the story of how he'd been in Jamaica before becoming a professor and saw this pretty Jamaican girl leading a pig down the beach on a rope. He watched as she then tossed the rope over a tree branch, hoisted the pig up and pulled a knife out to slash it's throat to bleed out. He thought to himself "I have to marry a girl who can do that." He did.
He was later hired as a professor.
Shortly after the first faculty function which included families there was a change whereby a dinner with a prospective faculty member and his family was added to the interview process.
My advisor is currently doing time for diddling a 7 year old. The story wasn't covered up, but I recall that the college and his role there was heavily downplayed or omitted in any reporting on it.

They're not great people.
Ahh, one of those places. I understand better now. That is a pity.
I recall some kind of a scandal that went down with the president at my school. It wasn't anything as terrible as illustrated above but the details weren't well distributed so I never actually was in the know on what exactly the guy did.
Well the bank won't give me credit because i'm a bad risk and I don't pay my bills on time. So I have to work for what I have!
