I forget if it was this thread or another where this conversation started, but this is as good a place as any to continue it:
I finally got my hands on the Carpenter "The Thing".
I wasn't blown away by it or anything. I'd seen parts before, including the defib scene. If I'd never seen it before, I'd see how that would have been a big deal. It's possible that the reviews and stuff had me expecting too much.
What is really interesting to me is that I found the old special effects WAY more disgusting than the CGI stuff. The dog scene and the defib scene were stomach-shockingly nasty, and similar stuff from the p-rema-quel didn't get to me.
I kinda want to go back and watch the p-rema-quel again, though. I'm looking on it a bit more kindly.
The only really big problem I had with the movie was the ship that Wilford Brimley made. That part was a stretch.
It was also difficult to keep track of all the characters beyond Snake, The President From Clear And Present, Diabetis, and Goliath. I kept getting the other guys confused with each other. Carpenter admits as much in the commentary, so I felt better about it after hearing that.
This goes back to "Is blank overrated? Of course it is, anything that highly rated is going to be overrated, but that doesn't mean it's not great" (I think I say this most often regarding Game Of Thrones). So yeah, The Thing probably isn't the best horror movie ever made, but it is very good. I would say it's the best H.P. Lovecraft movie ever made even though it isn't one. And yeah, it's shockingly gross. Pretty good.

Definitely not my insight. I can't remember where I first heard that, but it's a commonly-held opinion among Lovecraft people. It's basically an adaptation of the camp scenes from Mountains Of Madness if they had turned into the whole book, and I think John Carpenter has said in interviews that AtMoM was one of his primary inspirations for The Thing. Probably more so than the original The Thing.
