I did a brief look, and from what I can tell the best lead I have says that you've got a 'low speed squash ball' of some kind.

So your lead seems to point us in the direction of squash or sports.

Where or how did you acquire it?

Maybe the ball is anime related? Maybe it's from one of those shows

A brief glance at that page and search for the words 'pipe' and 'smoke' reveal nothing.

Unless you can explain why I found a broken pipe on the so-called victim's body, then that definitely doesn't line up with who we're looking for.
