People want better prize support distribution. People want more play space. People want an easier way to get to the event.
Eudemonia is about 2 blocks from the BART station. For $10.00 entry fee, I can offer double the prizes, and Eudemonia won't be making money on the event or giving out older boxes that players don't seem interested in.
I'll be using my discount to get us boxes for prize support, based on turn out. That means that at $10.00 per head, even 6 players is worth a box of boosters for prizes. 8 players and we get even more packs. 12 and we can get 2 boxes roughly. Get the idea?
We had 22 at CC on Sunday. And only the top 4 plus door prizes were awarded.
What about a box to first place, 1/2 a box for second, 8 for third 4 for 4th and 2 for everyone else, for $10.00 per head?
Plus assorted EAs and such, and it is sanctioned.
What will it take to get players excited about this?
For future tournaments... find out from CC what they want to get per booster for prizing. Then based on your numbers determined prizing with some math.
Say you use $10 as an entry fee. Ideally, that should buy 3-4 packs or product from the store if they give you a price break. Let's use 3.5 packs per person:
23 people x 3.5 = 80.5
Round that to 81 packs.
Let's take care of everyone by giving them 2 packs: 81 - 46 = 35
Now add the 35 packs to your top X (we'll assume 8 in this example):
1st: 10
2nd: 7
3-4: 5
5-8: 2
= 35 packs
Your total prizing would look like this:
1st: 12 packs
2nd: 9 packs
3-4: 7 packs
5-8: 4 packs
9-23: 2 packs
(that should add up to 81 packs... but I'm not Dalton)
I think getting 12 packs for $10 is a pretty good deal... it's not a box but this way everyone gets some decent prizing. You could probably still make it Win-A-Box by taking one pack away from the bottom 12 but that's kind of dirty if you want to build a casual crowd up.
You'll be surprised how many of the people who want to win will accept flattened out prizing because it will keep the tournaments going and the more people who play, the higher the payouts.
CC offers 2.5 packs per pool per person. Maybe 3 packs at the most.

They apparently do not buy product from UDE direct - BTW, is it true they cap VS at one case per store if you buy from UDE direct? - so they buy from some distributor at higher prices. How much do distributors charge? Any changes you could tell me which one you go through and how much it costs you? Cause honestly, I don't think this explains why they're using MSRP for their mathematics.
So that gives you 23 packs to divide amongst the top which ends up being something like 11/6/3/3?
Guys, what would you guys think about fliattened prizing?
BTW, I'm guessing SA > GA?
(Curtis, Sunday is probably better. I have some family stuff this Saturday that I forgot about apparently.)
Other then that, here's what I've learned - will change, I'm a slow learner.
Bring a Printer: I should've did this earlier. Will definitely bring one along next time. I was afraid of it being cumbersome, but as we get more people it seems increasingly worth it.
Order Ahead of Time: I shoulda called Domino's for their 3 for 15 offer, which is more fiscally efficient and feeds more people.
Start Calling Time I've been a little lax to enforce this because we never seem to go to time. Only the Charles and Matthew match-up ever seems to go to time. : P
Bring a Demo Deck Large crowd garners interests. I had one guy ask for a demo... it seems like the perfect way to spread the game.
Does anyone miss the videos or our mini-coverage? Should I just drop it and play in the tournaments?
I'm sure you get the idea. I prefer to flatten out the prizing as much as possible and if it's $5 per person, then they should get at least a pack, if it's $10 per person, they should get at least 2 packs.
Crap. I just realized I totally can't make Saturday. I really wanted to go, Curtis, but I'm doing a family thing and going to see 300 in imax so if it's not too late for the Sunday date... Hook us up!
Tournament report forthcoming tonight, probably. I definitely agree with Erick on the prizing, looking at his numbers. A box is nice, but always going home with a couple packs at the least, is better.
The Eudemonia event sounds real nice and if you have it saturday I can try to make it; I've been asking for a lot of weekends off lately so I'm not sure if I can.
This past CC tournament was great, I was surprised at the amount of people. It almost had an atmosphere of a sneak. Not only was everyone friendly but a lot of people were looking at all the new decks around, I played original or really tweaked decks the whole day.
I had no problem with the delay to get the first tourny started, but this last one was even worse. I know we were waiting for Curtis (and for good reason) but waiting around can get old quick. And like Paul said, enforcing the time limits would help.
Paul:
The video is cool, but I don't think its really necessary. If you drop it I don't think many people would miss it much. The mini coverage is a nice feature, but maybe you only need to do it for the last 2 matches at the top table? It seems like a lot of people are doing tourny reports anyway, which means you might be able to actually play.
