Do you still have to spend obscene amounts of money to make a winning deck? I had a couple friends who quit MtG because they couldn't win with the decks they could afford.
Yeah, a couple years ago. They felt it was an unnecessary mechanic, so poof. Personally, I agree.

They called it Money the Gathering.
Well, if you want to be on the Pro Tour (though God knows why you would, a bunch of fanatical rules-lawyering ######s thousands of times worse than the 'seriousness' of HC Worlds), probably. If you want to just win some local FNMs? Not really. You can build 'pauper' decks and do just fine there.
Particularly with JaceTMS and Stoneforge Mystic being banned in standard, deck prices should drop a fair amount.

I think so. I pulled 4 Jaces that way. And yes, there are still foils.

One of the horror stories I heard was a combination of Time Twister and some other cards to basically reset the game, if it was going poorly.
Ooh, my favorite combo for causing an opponent to concede out of frustration was Fork and Shahrazad. I'm amazed at how long it took them to ban that card.
Yeah. There was a lot of griefing in the early game with out-of-control control decks. Now, it's not nearly as bad.
No more mana burn, sorry.

I play with older players who don't play with any of the current cards, and I know they have several decks that are built on the idea that you can't just tap land willy-nilly without there being some consequence. One deck in particular, does a bunch of damage per untapped land, and I know the point of that is that Mana Burn is a preferable outcome.
That being said, we adhere to it still, just so they don't feel like their deck is a pile of ####.

I can understand Jace, but Stoneforge Mystic? Really? What was so bad about it?

I've also had luck with boosters. I will speak very highly of the preconstructed decks, however. My Breath of Fire deck has barely been modified from its original version, and it is still my most powerful deck by far.

Heard horror stories about Shahrazad.
My problem with stuff like that is, there's obviously some fun in that stuff, but what's the point? If both players cannot properly interact with one another in the game, then you have no game. You have a waste of time.
It's right up there with sniping in FPS's.

Eh, I just play with my wife's cousin since he's a fanatic about MtG. My regular clix venue also has MtG tournaments and the people seem friendly enough, but I can't even afford clix as it is. I'm just curious since I see E-2 Superman go for $100 on ebay, then see some Magic cards go for a lot more. Insanity. If I want a deck building game, I'll stick to Dominion.
Glad to say that I never did get and have no intention of getting into Magic the Gathering or any other CCG's. My card games likes run to Munchkin (and more recently, to Poo.) Other than that, talking CCG is like hearing a speech in Mandarin. I just don't understand and can live life without understanding.

Fixed it.

Rage by White Wolf was always a blast, but it had some gaping rules loopholes that the company never fixed. Also, the relative power of the expansions were horribly unbalanced. Umbra was useless, Wyrm was way overpowered. And the Amazon and Legacy finally grasped proper balance with a tad of power creep.
