Can you (or anyone else) tell me what the rarity breakdown is like for magic these days? They have something called "mythic rares" now that didn't exist last time I played. My friend and I were considering splitting a booster box. If we did, what should we expect in terms of # of cards of each rarity?
On a related note, is buying boosters or singles more economical for Magic?
I don't need to have a world championships level deck, but I want to be able to show up to local events without getting completely steamrolled.
Mythics are "Super rares". I believe that there's 4-5 per box, but it varies. If you guys are gonna split a box, you should play sealed with the packs. It gives you a good bang for your buck that way.
The general consensus is that buying singles is the most economical way to go. If you know what kind of deck you want to build, you can buy the cards you need from online retailers or your local shop. If you're just looking to build a collection, the booster box is a good way if you're into the cards in Innistrad. I'm tempted to buy a box myself just because I love cracking packs and a lot of the singles are pretty expensive at this point since there's a lot of speculation on what the power cards are going to be. I'm super excited about the dual lands and the PWs I've seen look like a ton of fun.

Mythic rares are, I believe one in eight packs. There are less in a set than rares, though, so they're not that much rarer than any given rare and the prices tend not to be much higher. Think GSX chases.
My advice on Magic is always that, unless you're playing sealed or you really like opening packs, buy singles. It's almost always cheaper.

Its Friday! Why the heck do I let my job upset me so?
One better I'm about 20 minutes away from a meeting with one of the bigwigs to talk about the morale around here and I've got nothing ever remotely positive to say about it. I wonder if I'll be employed much past today...
Catering to the lowest common denominator since Feb 2003.

What's going on that makes the environment caustic? I have a bit of experience in this area myself.
