the only way this story can possibly turn around now is if the real captain america shows up and socks hydra cap a stiff right hook to the chin, hitler-punching style
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
and given how he murdered rick jones with rick's last words being avengers assemble, the door's open for him to have used the destiny force to summon real cap as he did in the kree/skrull war (demonstrated in the avas chase). 'course, that requires spencer to 1) care about continuity against all presented evidence 2) care about captain America's character against all presented evidence
but I don't think they'll do anything as rewarding
oh sure, you can compare/contrast a thing, but as you noted the importance of framing an argument, crucible framed the justice lords as a reason for us all not to get our panties in a bunch by providing a circumstance very different than the whole point
and I don't think spencer's plot is the battle for the soul of a good man, I think it's the aftermath of the soul lost. he's championing the millennial cynicism of making the point that there are no heroes. it's been the manifesto of marvel comics in the last 10 years. there aren't heroes, not even flawed heroes, there's just people doing stuff, good and bad. there aren't examples to look up to, just, well, jerks.
so I find your optimism of spencer turning the story around to be rather ironic in the overwhelming face of marvel's cynicism. I get modern marvel is opposed to heroism, but why write funnybooks about superheroes, then? just go back to westerns and monster books
watch out for those crotchety crocheters, man, they carry needles

From the words of the author, as told to IGN. Spencer clearly doesn't want this to be a flag waving moment. As far as he is concerned, Cap is capital "E" Evil, and the rest of the Marvel universe is expected to act accordingly.

And the Kobik reverses the past year odds have gone to 3-2.

Congratulations Marvel. You've made an event you literally couldn't make me pick up for free

That is why I am staying away from this story now until then end.
I get why it upsets people, and in the end either the upsetting aspect are well tailored toward a good story or not. Given the recent track record of Marvel, I don't see how they pull up and stick the landing.

Yeah, no one at Marvel has ever said anything like that before. *winks repeatedly with his left eye*

I totally expect this to end up totally forgotten and effectively removed from cannon within the next 5 years or so, in fact, I am willing to bet that there is an official alternate universe created with a umber where Cap is Hydra.
But I certainly expect that to be as decree from Marvel or because of new writer, not because Spencer is using this as a big flag waving moment for Cap.

this is like the one time i'm not just fine with canon abuse, but rooting for it. normally I hate when a new writer comes on board and just craps on what came before, but man oh man I can't wait til spencer is succeeded and a new guy retcons this to "an incursion from an alternate universe cap with that history" and brings back real steve to kick his rear
You're correct. Superman was holding Lois in "protective custody." There was even a dinner scene that played out pretty much like the Steve/Sharon dinner in Secret Empire. I was wondering why that scene with Sharon and Steve felt so familiar.
I was thinking more '89 Batman where Joker tries to convince Vickie Vale that he's not such a bad guy.( after gassing the room of course, lol)
