this retirement thing is what separates teh people who buy MW to win a few free pieces of plastic, from the people who play to collect and have fun. [excludes teh people who collect to sell... thats just annoying]
Excuse me, but some of us don't have enough money to keep buy whole new armies every single year. So far I've spent ~2,000 on my current stuff (factoring in unit sales to cover expenses). I DO NOT have enough to invest in another base set/expasions in the future. There are other things that take priority. These changes effectively kill any chance for me to participate in any future sanctione events.
Yes, I am happy. I think this will be a very good thing for the long term play of the game and will improve tournament play. Here are several reasons I like the change:
1) It doesn't effect sealed tournaments which make up half of the competitive games anyways.
2) It keeps people from bringing the "same old army" to every single consturced tournament for the next five years.
3) Barring nuclear war, change is usually a good thing... even if it is a bit scary at first. :)
And what is wrong with you people that said yes? There is a big difference between mechwarrior banning 'broken' pieces and banning whole sets. The former is a great deal more desireable than the latter. How is this going to help against the cheese that everyone complains about anyways?
Dragon's Fury tank Drop: They've got the Garotte now and can still use the DI Schmitt. No change.
Swordsworn Artillery: The Sniper is gone but the Arrow IV is in. That was no trade off. No change.
Spirit Cats: Arnis is nowhere near getting banned. No dice there either...
no. I will not be buying any more cases of MW (I have bought 8).
When my three "broken" CA SS ArrowIV's are not playable, then I will be all the way out of MW. When my children are old enough to play (6-8 years) then I will dust off the MW stuff from the rubbermaid crates and we'll play "Dad's robot game".

This is the same trap that Wizkids has fallen into. By retiring a set, the pool of figures for building an army become finite. Thus the same army will be seen over and over more often than not.
Without addressing the mechanics of the game, the retiring will not work. The same problems of play balance will surface agina and again. Wizkids cannot prove that a new player will be competitve with limiting the figure pool. All you need to do is look at the results from Marque sealed booster events. The playing field is effectively levelled because of the sealded format. In theory, this should give a new player an equal shot at winning. however, in reality, its the more experienced player who wins 9 times out of 10. Why? Because they understand the mechanics of the game and the interaction between the figures, special equipment and game rules. This proposal is effectively trying to stretch out the newbie learning process over a longer period of time hoping that they will stick it out until they catch on. However, they will never equal the experince of the veteran player who continues at the same pace. What's more likely to happen is the veteran player will continue to beat any new players, now regardless of format play and discourage any new players from playing. Why? word of mouth a newbie tells his friend, who was thinking of playing, how they just got stomped, even though the playing field was supposed to be levelled because of retirement. Newbie decides not to continue becaus ethey don't want to lose every week. Friend doesn't start becaus ehe would prefer to avoid the stomping and lose the money he spent to play. and on and on.
Neither.
Like every game change thus far that I've disagreed with (most of which were initiated my mass "I'll quit if you don't change..." whining), I'll adapt to it.
Not excited about it, but I don't oppose it.
