I could not make up this story if I tried. I had to go through the art room today to retrieve some items I had left there earlier for one of my science class experiments.
Thank you for posting this. I love to start my days with a good laugh.
Oh, I'm not complaining or jumping on the boycott bandwagon.
The corporations/companies choosing to be open on Thanksgiving are businesses first and foremost. They have one goal...to make money. If they determine that to meet that goal they should be open on TG, then that is their choice to make.
There are plenty of factors which much be weighed in order to come to that conclusion to open their doors on that day. They...
Let me digress a bit...
I'm totally in favor of the notion that restaurants, bars, etc. should still be allowed to have smoking sections. If I'm the owner of that business, then it should be my choice on whether or not to have a smoking section. I would do so with the knowledge that this might mean some customers would choose not to eat in my establishment. On the other hand, I also know that it could mean that I would attract some business from other establishments which have chosen not to offer a smoking section. Either way, the choice should be mine. I should not be forced to eliminate a smoking section because some customers do not wish to eat in a smoky environment. Those consumers have the right to choose where to spend their resources. It then becomes a simple choice for the consumer about whether he values my food more than his desire to eat in fresh air.
I understand that the majority of places got this pushed through by going from the employee aspect, but I think it is the other side of the same coin there. If you don't want to work in a smoky environment, don't apply for a freaking job at a place with a smoky environment.
Ok...
So you've basically got the same issue here. The retailers have a choice. They can be open on Thanksgiving, or they can be closed on Thanksgiving. To make this decision they have to decide whether or not being open is going to allow them to make a profit. Clearly the ones who are doing so have decided that being open will allow them to make a profit.
In order to be open, however, they need to have people staffing the store, so obviously the employees are going to have to work on that day. As with the restaurant example above, if this does not satisfy you as a worker, you can seek employment elsewhere.
Now, the past couple of years where the concept of being open on TG is just getting legs, I can understand the frustration from seasoned retail workers. Somebody who has worked for KMart for 20 years would have had past practice of a Thanksgiving holiday to form this expectation. Going forward, however, anyone applying for a job at a major retailer should be doing so with the knowledge that he's probably going to be working on that day. If he accepts the job with this knowledge, he shouldn't complain about it when the time comes to meet that requirement.
The only argument I've heard from the other side is basically "Retailers shouldn't be open on Thanksgiving because it would be really nice of those retailers to let people have the day to spend with their families."
The world is not based around being nice. Sorry. And I can't help but wonder, assuming there was a massive rollback and stores didn't open on TG. How many of the people with that "new" free time would actually be spending that time with their families.
It's like the people at my college who would gripe about the number of lame rules, restrictions, and requirements. You knew you would have to attend chapel services 16 times a semester when decided to go there.
On top of that, why is it that people only give a fig about the retail workers? Emergency and law enforcement people are on the clock. Utilities still need to be running. I imagine hotel workers are having some pretty busy times, too. Why does nobody cry out for them? I suppose that it is fine that grandma's hotel stay keeps those people from being with their families because, hey, we get to see our grandma.
Easy, Mark Twain. You were right about my intentions. I though it was obvious but then I think a lot of things.
Sorry, I just get a little unhinged by all of the people I see rallying for the cause of the poor retail workers on Thanksgiving when most of them are already benefitting in some way from the efforts of some other non-retail worker who is doing his job on the same day. I know I've filled my tank on Thanksgiving.
One of my first retail jobs was at Blockbuster. Their hours were 10:00 am to midnight every day except they closed at 10:00 pm on Christmas and opened and noon on January 1st.
Catering to the lowest common denominator since Feb 2003.

I think we all know your opinions on legalizing transgender prostitution.

Why would they close for a whole week after Christmas?
I finished 2nd overall, and it was quite an adventure.
I was 300-ish points behind Calfee for the Nekron.
Boosters were available, so THAT GUY shows up with his daughter.
I face her in the first round and beat her. I was running a GL themed team and the Power Battery with the ring. I ask to see her figures cards before the game and offer her mine, she declines. (This is important)
She self perplexes up her attack on her Hal/Sinestro duo fig and I ask her "Are you sure?" (Knowing what she was going to do and trying to give her a chance not to make this huge mistake, without actually playing the game for her) She says "yes". So she then proceeds to running shot to attack. I say you cannot make the attack because of the
Her fig is then out in the open and pushed now.
I feel like a complete asshat, but I offered her the chance to see my build and asked if she was sure she wanted to perplex, giving her the opportunity to not make the mistake.
I asked the judge to come over and make sure everything was legit and apologized to her, but she broke down crying as I shredded her team. She went to THAT GUY and he got all righteous and up in my face, poking me in the chest and then belly bumping me into the door frame. He spewed a lot of hot air and words... I told him to step back and not to ever touch me again. I wanted to kick his ###, but did not raise my voice nor my hand because he brought his kid and he had already made himself look like an idiot.
I did nothing he has not done dozens if not more times, but he gets his panties twisted when it happens to his kid.
I am going to talk to the venue owners tomorrow about his conduct and his becoming physical. The wife was there but she is a very timid and soft spoken and would not have said anything if we had brawled and destroyed the store.
I closed the gap with Calfee, but not quite enough to catch him. He beat me in round 2, 145 to 70.

He is a member. I just have never mentioned his username.
I am going to irritate the crap out of him for a while in the most passive/aggressive ways I can imagine for a while.
Last night he showed up late and just stood around. There was a newer guy there who I had earlier traded for the Parallax entity. He did not want it, I handed him my dupes and said let me know what you want for it. We were both happy, I got rid of some stuff and got something THAT GUY wanted, one of 2 figs from WOL he does not have. I left it setting on top of my stuff and he immediately asks about it when he comes in. I tell him I had just traded for it and he asks what I want for it. I spent all evening leading him around with trade deals and then packed my stuff up and left. There are only 3 of them in the area that I know of and he will not get mine and I do not really want it.
