Joe Q the Magnificent Retconner explains Xorn for once and for all
FROM Newsarama:
NRAMA: Gotcha. Moving to other topics - this week saw Brian Bendis (hopefully) explain or close the book on Xorn in New Avengers #20. Okay – honestly now – can you explain to us what he was/is? And Magneto has powers again? Depowered isn’t depowered, is it?
JQ: Kuan-Yen Xorn and Shen Xorn were twin brothers from China, both mutants, one with the power of a star in his head, one the power of a black hole. Kuan-Yen Xorn came under the influence of as-yet-to-be-revealed entity that forced him to assume the identity of Magneto, battle the X-Men and destroy Manhattan. He was subsequently killed by Wolverine near the end of that battle, in the Planet X storyline.
Soon thereafter, his twin brother Shen surfaced and briefly joined the X-Men. This Xorn brother was de-powered during M-Day.
Because Xorn's powers were psychokinetic, and his personality was so strong, it basically remained an almost disembodied sentient thing among the big ball of mutant energy. When that energy got sucked down to Earth by Michael and all absorbed by him, Xorn was the dominant personality in the mix, and that's what drove him towards Genosha and Magneto.

Why not just tell the truth Joe ?
"Well ... Grant Morrison signed a long term exclusive with DC ... so we needed to retroactively hose his entire run which put food on my table, which I obviously ate quite a bit of."
Believe it or not I really liked Grant Morrison's run on NXM.
It was different. And by different, I mean it was good. Oh, sure. I was deadset against it at first because it wasn't Claremont, but after reading a couple interviews about what he had planned on his temporary run, Morrison won me over. Plus, the stories were really good and kept me coming back for more.
The Planet X storyline had me perplexed. I mean, how does Magneto just go whacky like that?!? Especially after years of having his character developed by CC. Then Morrison explained everything in a follow-up interview after the fans went crazy about Mags-Xorn.
Grant explained he was ever so tired of the villains always being explained as the "black" and the good guys were always explained as the "white." There was never any "grey" anymore in the comic book worlds. One was either a "bad guy" or one was a "good guy." Back in the 1980's writers started writing characters as "grey."
Sandman turned good, but still did dirty jobs. The Punisher became good, but still killed people. Magneto became good, but still did some pretty nasty stuff to ensure mutants wouldn't be exterminated. Doctor Doom even had comics devoted to him where he was seen as the victim of circumstance and vanity. He even did some "good guy" things and now became "grey."
The list goes on. But, then, Marvel ran out of villains to use. They re-hired CC back on UXM/XM in 2000 and told him they wanted him to create all new villains for the X-Men. A new Rogue's Gallery per say. So, being CC-- he did. The fans hated his new villains. So much so that Marvel took him off the books in less than a year's time. Sure, they threw him a bone with XXM, but that was just a slap in the face.
Joey Q, being the ##### he is, threw himself at Grant Morrison and begged him to make the X-Men popular again. Morrison agreed and came up with the whole idea of making Mag's a "bad guy" again. Joey Q jumped all over this because:
1) He is a #####.
2) Going back to the Golden Age and Silver Age where comic book characters are either "bad" or "good" and never develop personalities of their own was a good thing in Joe's limited vision.
So, onward Grant goes. Grant later explained in the same follow-up interview that the whole thing with Mag's becoming a "bad guy" who only wants to "Rule the World" was not a tribute to the Golden Age and Silver Age. It was a gross exaggeration and a slap in the face to everyone that felt the world only has "white" or "black" in it and no "shades of grey."
He said his story based on a "villain" who only wants to "Rule the World" was a statement of how bad the comic book industry has become. The Planet X story was basically-- in an offhand way-- a tribute to Claremont and every other writer in the past that tried to develop characterization for the heroes/villains. Obviously, it went over a lot of heads-- even Joey Q's.
And, then, during SDCC of 2000-whatever, Grant Morrison walked right up to Joe Q and said: "I've got nothing more to say with the X-Men. I quit."
This is a true story because Joey Q told it during his Cup O' Joe Panel at last year's WWE. I was there and heard it. That was also the Panel where Joe and I got into heated words with each other over his unfair treatment of CC.
The way Joe told the story was to make Grant seem like a jerk for bailing on Marvel and going to DC. I took it as a true and devoted writer that knows when it's time to leave a book. If you have nothing more to say and anything else will be obvious drivel just to get a paycheck then that is a sign of a #####-- like Joey Q.
It was at that same SDCC that Joe was approached by Joss Whedon who said he would like to take a shot at writing the X-Men. Joe was all proud when he related that, too. He even mentioned he had been "whoring" himself [his words, not mine] to Joss for months now.
Anyway, it doesn't surprise me in the least Joey Q and Marvel are dumping all over Grant's stories/plots. Joey Q-- without Jemas's control over him-- has turned into a school yard baby: "That's my ball! I'm going home with it and nobody can play."
For the love of everything you hold dear, don't say that!!!! Anything but that!!!!
Hadn't heard that story before but two things:
1. Morrison's run on New XMen was the first time in at least 8 years that I had been driven (by good storytelling and other nonsense) to pick up an X-related title. I enjoyed every single issue.
2. It makes so much sense (Quesada's a #####, dumping on the Xorn storyline and Mags should be dead....again!) it can't be wrong. Quesada is an idiot.

I liked Morrisons run on the X Men too. Becasue it was so different we all knew that it woudlnt last and theyd have to somehow bring the whole thing back to its roots. Now they have to dismiss alot of what happened and it seems like a waste of time to have read it. For someone who likes cohesive continuity like me anyways. Why not just make it a divergent world or something.
The selfish infect us all with sad, vulgar, sexual references and a constant barage of innapropriate innuendo. A pity to be subjected to this against our wills, but to allow it into our lives with open arms shames us all

I also loved Morrison's run on New X-Men...until the bitter end.
For my taste the whole "Xorn was really Magneto (or somebody who claimed to be Magento)" never jived with me because of basic plot points (the initial rescue of Xorn, the 'stick my head in the warp core', and the 'magical healing Nanobots')...although I loved the idea of Magneto hiding in a helmet to infiltrate the X-men.
Once we got to the point where 'Magneto' was on kick, and in total control of NYC...well, I knew there was going to be some serious mental and continuity gymnastics coming up.
I've come to the conclusion that Joe Quesada is the anti-matter universe version of Jim Shooter. In some ways they are eerily similar, but in many ways they are exact opposites.

Go back and reread all the books in a short sitting. All the clues are there that Xorn really was Magneto.
Morrison weaved a tale for the ages. He stunned more folks than Mark Millar has done on The Ultimates.

Surprisingly, this is not a shocker.
In Grant's initial interview in Wizard Magazine right when he came onboard NXM he stated quite clearly that he had big plans to shake up the X-Men's world and bring huge changes and great stories.
BUT--
He also clearly stated that when he ran out of things to write he would leave the X-Men world and when he did leave, everything would be as it was before he came onboard.
Which was true, to a degree:
1) Magneto was dead.
2) Charles was crippled.
3) Magneto was back to being a "bad guy."
-- Thankfully Claremont retconned him back and made him all "shades of grey again."
Morrison also left it open that Cyclops could stay with Emma or Jean could be written to resurrect herself from the White Hot Room and be with Scott again. Apparently Marvel decided to keep him with Emma.
