I just got done watching the Hulk vs Thor movie, which was more meaningful to me this time than it was the first time I saw it, since I was able to point out all the cool Asgardian Heroclix figures that we now have...and I got to thinking about the whole Mythology thing, and Marvel's take on it. Is there any websites or resources that compare/contrast the two? Or even something a little more in-depth about either version, I'm curious to see how similar/dissimilar they are, much like I was when I first saw Disney's Hercules.
I don't know of any sites you can look into but I know that Stan and jack played it fast and loose with the mythology. For Instance Thor actually should have been a burly redhead with a heavy beard and not necessarily as likely to make the ladies swoon quite as much. Don't expect to find any references to the Warrior's Three in standard mythology texts. Sif was supposed to be a hot blonde and not inclined to dump Thor for an anthropomorphic horse named Beta Ray Bill. And Balder was supposed to be dead.
Roy Thomas made some efforts to bring the two mythologies closer in line and Walt Simonson went even further. Walt even went so far as to take away Odin's eye the way he's supposed but unfortunately Tom DeFalco felt obligated to give it back and basically negate all the cool things Walt did so he show just how bland his own ideas were.
I'd like to see them play up some of the other important gods from the mythology such as the Vanir and Tyr. Tyr was the Norse god of war. 1it's kind of illogical that he isn't used more.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.
Yeah,Thor is pretty different in the actual myths. He lived life to excess, plenty of eating, drinking,"how's your father?" & slaying the enemies of Asgard. If you looked at him funny he'd kill you without a thought if the other Gods didn't intervene. Mjolnir was so heavy few could lift it,rather than the whole "worthiness" aspect & the thunder was created not by his hammer but by the hooves of his 2 goats as they pulled his chariot across the sky.
Major Gods like Frey & Freya are also conspicious by their absence in the comics.
I have an old book on world mythology and it has a chapter on the Norse Gods. I found it very interesting and was quite impressed at the amount of actual Norse mythological characters actually made it into the Marvel universe. I have not read very much at all of the Thor or the Journey into mystery comics, but I am pretty familiar with the cast from reading the Marvel Universe Handbooks and Marvel comics in general over the years. The writers at Marvel may not have kept to all the small details, but you have to give them a break if they are trying to come up with their own stories and want them to be good. The actual story of Ragnarok is awesome. I have not read the Marvel Thor Ragnarok series yet, but plan to. If it is anything like the mythology, it should be an awesome read.

Thanks for the info- I'll have to check out some Thor comics. Simonson sticks closer to canon? If so, I'll check those out first. I'd rep you, but it's too soon, apparently.

Ragnarok is of interest to me too, especially with the Ragnarok Surtur. See, that's what I'm really interested in. Someone like Surtur- is he a real Norse entity, or something Marvel made up? Either way, he's a really cool character, it's just interesting to me.

Surtur exists in the myths,he is the eldest of all beings.
During Ragnarok,he battles & kills Frey, who has given away his magical sword which fights under its own power & has to instead use a stags antler.

I believe they refer to him as Surt in the Norse Mythology though.

Surter has several spellings I think. The most common is Surtr.
Walt Simonson; by the way, added his own little flavor to the Marvel version. He's responsible for turning Thor into the frog of Thunder, Beta Ray Bill, Kurse and Malekith and introduced The Cask Of Ancient Winters.

Norse Mythology is... pretty fast and loose in the Marvel Universe. Nothing of the Vanir, Loki is far more adversarial, and basically all the goddesses are represented by the Enchantress.
Greek gods, thanks to Pak, are getting much better development and keeping closer to the myths, though there is the whole "Pluto" thing. Blar.

My very educated mother just served us nine? You can't stop at nine! What about the pizza! No Pluto, no pizza!
Maybe now she serves nachos, or nutmeg. I know that, when I was a kid, there was nothing I looked forward to more than a heaping bowl of nutmeg on a cold winter's morning.
aren't the vinir used at the end of the thor disassembled story line by oeming? thor goes to them and says the cycle is going to end and then proceeds to help make ragnorok permanent
