“Cult Crashers”
by Lightshear
The world was crumbling. Earthquakes tore at the ground and buildings rocked, the weaker ones crumbling and toppling into the stronger, conspiring to bring whole cities to their knees. Fire leapt from the pits that opened as the volcano raged, and the sky turned red and then blackened as the flaming pits spat lava at the clouds. It was as if the Earth was showing its fury at the gods above; raging in its death throes, it would not go quietly into the great night.
The fifth sun was ending, he could feel it. His bones rattled and his heart was pounding as he watched the end come. Twin suns burned in the distance; the star in the sky struggled to shine through the blackened clouds and sulfuric ash raining down from on high, and the second sun which had fallen to earth. It spread great wings with feathers of fire, so wide they could be seen from any point in the Americas. A snake's head rose from its body and screamed to the sky, feathered plumage like liquid light shaking in the smoke.
"It is come, boy," a voice said behind him, speaking in the ancient tongue which he had been trained in from infancy. "You have failed."
He turned around and beheld a stalking jaguar watching him from the shadows. Brilliant golden eyes stared out from the darkness of a cave, and a barely visible shadow rolled its shoulders. He cowered at the sight of the horrible beast as it lowered itself and prepared to pounce.
"This is how your world ends!"
He couldn't move, and fell beneath the claws of the jaguar as it pounced upon him and crushed his body to the ground. He felt his stomach give way as talons longer than swords tore him open. The jaguar's one remaining rear foot tore at him, while the stump which ended in a polished obsidian slab allowed him to see his disembowelment from every angle.
He screamed out his death cry as he launched up in bed, crying out for several seconds before his eyesight returned him to the world of waking and he realized he had been dreaming.
Uno breathed heavily as a hand shot to his stomach. Still intact, his body sagged in relief. Sweat dripped from his skin and hair and his bed was soaked with it. The air cooled it and left him cold and shivering despite the well-regulated temperature of the embassy. He stood slowly from the bed and went to the window where snow fell in soft, gentle flakes from the night sky.
The dreams were becoming more vivid, but that was to be expected. He'd been having them since he was a child; they were part of the revelation of his significance and the significance of the times he had been born into. But the leopard had never been there before, and its presence could only mean one thing - the end was coming soon. Too soon.
"52," he sighed, leaning his forearm on the windowpane and finding the cold somehow soothing, despite his chill. The apocalypse wasn't supposed to come for years, yet. He was supposed to have time; time to prepare, time to complete his training, time to ready himself for his part, as it was written. Our fate cannot be changed, and yet… the leopard was almost here. It wasn't fair, if there was such a thing as fair.
He felt something pulling at him. It was a lingering feeling of unease from the dream; something that was not just a sensation from within the dreaming, but was connected to the here and now. He closed his eyes and tried to focus on it.
His training had not just been that of the perfection of the physical and mental, but also of the spirit. To be the champion he must be required a deeper connection to the weave of fate and the current of destiny. If one could quiet the soul and remove the self, they could feel where their destiny led and place themselves properly on its path rather than live in discord with their future.
The feeling was definitely a calling. There was somewhere he was supposed to be-- something he had to stop. He was being summoned to action by his destiny.
He closed his eyes and mentally activated the deeply-seeded control mechanism in his brain. Nanofibers emerged from the pores of his skin along his spine and flowed over his body, shaping themselves into armor of pristine white and gleaming gold. The fibers formed microscopic wires connecting the armor to his nervous system, merging the functions of his suit with his mind and body. Plates solidified and shifted into place, raising and clicking back down as the powered suit went through its diagnostic sequence. When he opened his eyes, his vision was amplified with head's-up display reticules at his periphery. He made a fist and felt the armor's diagnostic check completing.
Aztek was ready to find the source of the night's calling.
_______________________________________
Ted Kord stumbled through the halls of the JLI Embassy, having just left the kitchen of the residence level he was currently on his way to the rec room to eat his late-night snack. He'd woken suddenly with a throbbing head and an ache in his stomach. Usually those symptoms were best cured with the application of waffles treated with liberal amounts of peanut butter and banana slices.
It hadn't helped yet, so he'd planned to spend some time on the couch scarfing and pondering life, the universe, and his navel as was his custom on such nights. He just hoped he could shake the feeling he was having; a deep-seeded feeling of… not-rightness. It was profoundly uncomfortable, but not exactly physically. It was the feeling when his foot fell asleep form lack of circulation, but in his brain. He didn't like it.
As he walked along and lifted his plate to shovel another load of doughy, peanut-buttery, banana-ey goodness into his mouth with his free hand, the tingling in his head returned and the ache in him intensified. It was getting strong enough that he almost didn't notice Aztek running down the hall and nearly got run over.
"Hey, I'm walkin' here!" he shouted in a reflexive Brooklyn drawl. Aztek didn't acknowledge him in the least. Ted was torn between being offended and being curious, and (as it always did) his curiosity won out.
"Hey, hold up!" he shouted as he ran to keep pace with his fleeing teammate. "You're never this cold-shouldery, man - something going on?"
"Yes," Aztek said simply. "I apologize for my rudeness, Mr. Kord, but I am being summoned to action and cannot afford to tarry."
"Yeah, I can't afford that girl either," Ted laughed, then shook his head and his eyes bugged at how bad a joke that was. Spending too much time with Booster Gold was really starting to mess with him. "What I meant to say was 'wha-huh?'"
"Is that a question?"
"Yeah, guy, what's this summoning business about? Is Max bugging us in the middle of the night, now?"
"It was not Mr. Lord, it was my destiny," Aztek said as they reached the stairwell and he began flying downward. Ted was forced to take the steps five at a time, deciding to quickly down his waffles rather than leave them for Guy Gardner to find (like every other plate of food he'd ever left in the stairwell).
"A great wrong is occurring and I must stop it," he finished.
"Oh, ho! Action? Sounds good to me - you need a hand? I can't sleep anyway, and I could use the exercise."
"I do not-- think it would be a problem," Aztek said, taken off guard by the offer. "I am not used to having assistance - would this be an imposition? I would not wish to inconvenience you."
"Wow…" Ted whistled as they reached the bottom of the stairs. "You are way too nice of a guy to be on this team. No it wouldn't inconvenience me - I'm a dang super-hero. When I'm not busy being a celebrity (which was never my idea, by the way)."
"So…?"
"So let's go, partner!" Ted grinned, leaping from the last landing on the stairway and calling his armor. Azure tendrils of liquid metal leapt from his neck and upper spine, surrounding his body and solidifying in a suit of armor as pure in it's shades of blue and navy as Aztek's was white and gold. It all happened in the time it took him to reach the floor, and when he hit he slammed the ground hard, standing slowly as his suit completed its own diagnostic check.
"…do, uh-- do you know where we're going, by chance?" Blue Beetle asked as the scarab armor's green HUD crept into the periphery of his awareness. "And why aren't we taking the roof exit?"
"Well… I am actually not sure," Aztek said, coming up short. "I was acting on instinct, allowing my fate to guide me where I needed to go. I suppose that the roof would have been more convenient an exit…"
"Hey, gang!" Mr. Miracle said as he passed them by, waving.
"Hey, Scot-- Scott? Shouldn't you be at home? With your wife??" Beetle asked.
"I dunno," he shrugged. "I felt like hanging out here a while. Things are… weird at home."
"Ahhh," Beetle nodded. "Trouble in paradise. Too bad, man. Hey - we're gonna have an adventure. Wanna come?"
"Sure!" he smiled broadly.
"And now we are three," Aztek said, smiling a little himself. "But we must move quickly. My fate line is pulling quite strongly, so whatever we are to do it must be quite urgent."
The three ran for the front doors of the embassy, leaving shocked office workers in their wake as they hurried to the exit.
"You know who you sound like?" Beetle said as the three clumsily pushed into the same space in the revolving door. "A Spanish Orlando Bloom."
"I do not know this man," Aztek said.
"Yeah, I guess he kinda flamed out popularity-wise," Beetle shrugged. As one, the three fell out of the revolving door and onto the street. Jumping to their feet heroically, they looked out into the bustling city and prepared to fly off too…
"Where are we going, again?" Mr. Miracle asked.
"I don't know," Aztek said.
"He doesn't know," Beetle confirmed.
"Booooys!" a silky voice shouted from the street. The three turned as one to see Beatriz DaCosta stumbling out of a cab.
"Fire?" Beetle asked. "Are you just now getting home?"
"I know she grinned widely, leaning on his shoulder. "It's still early for me, too! I jusw-- 'scuse me, I just was thinking that I should cut the night short for once. Leave my public wanting more, yes?"
"Good gravy," Beetle's eyebrows arched. "Where's Ice? She's usually your handler, isn't she?"
"Tora-bora didn't come out tonight," she laughed. "She's soo cute, but she wouldn't come out with me tonight."
Suddenly Bea squinted her eyes and her eyebrows lowered as if discovering something. "Hey! Are you boys going out?"
"No, Fire, we're going to fight crime. Probably. Aztek has a-- he's got a thing, and it says-- anyway, we're super-heroes, remember?"
"I know! And I want in," she pushed away from Beetle and spun a little on her toes, trailing a sparkling shimmer of green flame around her indecently-covered-for-anytime-let-alone-winter body.
"You know I'd love to say yes, Bea, but you're trashed. Go pour yourself into bed and leave the heroing to the men," Beetle said, hands on his hips in his best 'Captain Atom' pose.
"Yeah!" Mr. Miracle agreed, mimicking the pose. "We're going to waste some bad guys."
"Pffft! You boys couldn't waste time without us women. Besides--" she put her hands out and her body ignited in a wreath of brilliant emerald fire. "The fire burns off the buzz. It's why I never light up when I'm out clubbing. Mostly. So, we gonna fight crime or not? I'm ready!"
She tried to look her most heroic, striking an epic pose and hovering off the ground. The effect was slightly broken when she let out a tiny, high-pitched burp. She valiantly fought off the giggles and restored her serious face.
"Whatever," Beetle said, shaking his head. "Lead the way, Aztek - we've wasted enough time. Destiny awaits!"
_______________________________________
Following whatever was drawing Aztek in, the group eventually came to rest on a rooftop looking up at a high-rise skyscraper being built uptown. The dull grey steely bones of the building stood out in stark contrast to the blue-black sky and the dancing lights of the sleepless city beyond. Heavy rubber tarps hung around the exterior to cover and protect the unfinished insides from the elements, but here and there beams and girders jutted out into the open.
“Jenga,” Beetle slammed a fist into his palm as he looked at the building.
“Is this the place?” Mr. Miracle asked. “It certainly looks like somewhere something bad might happen.”
“I believe so,” Aztek nodded slowly, licking his lips as if testing the air. “Dark things are being done here. Something is being… raised.”
“I should hope so,” Fire smiled lasciviously, letting her hand run over Aztek’s forearm.
“Why would you hope for such a thing?” he asked, looking at her with surprise.
“Oh, you are adorable,” she laughed lightly.
“For the love of-- come on,” Beetle smacked his forehead. “The bad guys are in there? Yeah? Alright! Let’s go! Yeesh.”
The four flew across to the building, moving slowly and with Fire being carried by Aztek so that her powers wouldn’t give them away too soon. As they rose through the air, working around the perimeter of the unfinished steel structure, Beetle and Aztek’s armors picked up faint sounds from within. They followed from the outside before having to part the heavy rubber sheets hanging around the sides and step into the construction site.
Inside was a maze of girders and beams, rebar and concrete, wooden planks and loose ropes. Holes dotted ceilings and floors, ladders leading in all directions making it hard to tell up from down; it closely resembled something from the brain of Escher. Deeper within this labyrinth of an unfinished skyscraper, they could hear distant chanting. They hovered closer until they came at last across a group of robed figures performing some sort of ritual over a set of barrels with brilliant fires inside.
“I’m thinking this is the thing?” Beetle asked. Aztek nodded in response.
“Their ritual is nearly complete. We must stop them-- what they are summoning cannot be allowed to enter this world.”
“Não um problema,” Fire smirked. “Those robes should burn nicely.”
“Hold, villains!” Mr. Miracle shouted, leaping forward and striking a pose with his hands on his hips. “You now face the Justice League - and we demand you cease all summonings and/or ritual performances of any non-Judeo-Christian origin!”
In return, the cultists let their robes open in the front to reveal bodies covered in belts holding row upon row of daggers. With quick flicks of their wrists, sharply curved daggers leapt to their hands. Though their faces couldn’t be seen within the deep hoods, the glints of firelight off their daggers cast illuminated lights in their eyes.
“Great,” Beetle said, charging ahead. “Real subtle, Scott.”
“I was being bombastically heroic in an inappropriate manner,” he said, seeming perplexed. “Isn’t that what we do?”
Aztek ignored them both, focusing on the obvious leader of the group. When he saw Aztek coming, he threw down exploding smoke bombs and disappeared. Aztek set his helmets scanners to searching for the leader. They had to shut this down and soon; he had arrived early enough to stop the rite of summoning, but he had to know if this was part of the jaguar’s plot or not. If it was, then this would only be the beginning…
