So... first off, I know I'm kind of a new member here and I don't want this to be taken as a troll but.
I really couldn't stand this movie. Without getting into too many spoilers,
the first half (Magneto: Nazi Hunter / Professor X: Wanker) was very good.. bordering on great. Throw in the Hellfire Club plot, and I was gearing up for an awesome 007esque Super Hero movie.
Until, the second half which became X-Men: Friday Night WB Show... from having a freakin 'find the mutant' montage to the dude.... like what powers do you have scene. People could hear my eyes roll. It's quite a shame really as the first half primed you for an awesome second half. END SPOILERS
I liken it a bit to Star Wars: Episode II. You have some awesomeness with the Obi-Wan scenes, that are killed by the horrible Anakin scenes. In fact, if you had thrown Anakin into X-Men: First Class, he'd have fit right in.
There were some entertaining parts, but it didn't wow me, and some parts were so over the top cheesy that I couldn't take it seriously at all. Add to that that none of the actresses in the film delivered a particularly strong performance, and I was "meh" about the whole film. Had good effects and action, and Magneto was great, but other than that, it ranged from terrible to average.
I was thoroughly entertained. Lately I have found with a lot of movies I've seen at the theatre that I get bored shortly after the one hour mark. That was not the case with this one. Michael Fassbender was great as Magneto. There were some nice jokes thrown in and the plot was okay. Oh, and I totally dig the sixties chic.
On the downside: Emma Frost. Where's the allure? And a little explanation would have been nice why Raven just happens to be in the Xaviers' kitchen one night. At the end I felt there was too much posing and giving speeches going on. Didn't feel natural.
The synchronisation was terrible, but that should not influence my rating.
As well as the fact that Jennifer Lawrence probably has the sexiest legs ever to walk this earth.
I seem to be finding a lot of new subforums I like lately. Anyhow, I'll give my thoughts.
Plot: 9.5/10. Very well worked and true to the atmosphere at the time period. US versus Russia, people profiteering, US developing new weapons, Nazi war crime hunter. It all fit very well together, not very many holes.
Characters: 7.5/10. No comic fanboyness here, Shaw and Lensherr were great, even some of the others were as well. A lot of characters were very one-note. I'm XXX, I do this as my mutant power. I realize there are supporting and main characters, but it could have been better.
Acting: 8.5/10. Very solid across the board. Wouldn't be surprised if Bacon or Fassbender got Oscar noms. Even Jones managed a respectable Emma Frost.
Intangibles: 9/10. Good mix of sex appeal, drama, action, and characterization. I had never seen Jennifer Lawrence before this, but wow. Zoe Kravitz wasn't bad either. Good jokes, not many lulls in the plot or action. Hugh Jackman cameo was priceless.
Overall: 8.6/10 I would pay to see this in theaters again and will definitely be buying it on video.
It was a different X-Men story from the one we all know, but I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. I have heard the original X-Men story too many times before, I was glad to see something new. I think it is okay to tell a new story as long as the characters stay true to the source material and by and large I think this film did a good job with that (other than a very weak performance by January Jones as Emma).
Matthew Vaughn has proven himself to be more than capable in the past and he didn't disappoint me at all with a comic book film that relies more on story and character than on stuff blowing up. This film is in the top 3 or 4 Marvel movies thus far for me.
With an admitted bias towards being a huge X-men fan ( and with Magneto being my favorite comic character ) I loved this movie. To date, I've seen it 4 times in theatres ( with different people ) and the enjoyment level never really dropped.
Magneto and Professor X were played perfectly. I think general consensus is that Fassbender was the highlight of the movie, and I couldn't agree more, but they made me care about, and get behind Xavier which CAN be a challenge as a lead character since they took someone who is usually a mentor/adviser role and had to make him a lead protagonist which could be more challenging for the more "dry" Xavier we see as he ages.
There ONLY complaints I had were a few cheesier lines, but they didn't really harm the movie too much for me. I'd have loved to see a bit more development of some of the supporting characters, and a bit more of a fleshing out of the Hellfire Club ( I loved what they did with them, but a bit more backstory would have taken them from good antagonists to awesome ones ) On that note, the movies pacing was fantastic, and for an over 2 hour long movie it flowed much faster. I don't feel like they had any easily cut parts of the movie, so I can't really claim much mismanagement on the time, the plot was just pretty vast and it stinks that they didn't really get a chance to go even more in depth with some areas.
I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching a movie as much as I have enjoyed watching this one. The rush I got while watching it, and the enjoyment I got thinking about it afterwards hadn't been had since the release of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I'm going to give it a 10/10, since to date, its the most enjoyable experience at a movie theatre that I've had.

I found First Class to be very enjoyable. It paid a slight homage to the ealier X-Men films without trying to stay beholden to them. The story was well crafted and easy to follow (until the finale, at least). Some of the FX were of questionable quality, but not enough so to take me out of the film.
The only part I didn't care for was Emma Frost. Her character was undefined and poorly executed. Her primary purpose was to look hot, be the evil telepath, and look hot some more. I've read several complaints about her elsewhere, most of which all seem to blame the actress, January Jones. I disagree. The woman can't deliver a character with meaning if none of her lines have any meaning. Why is she loyal to Shaw and put up with him treating her like a servant? That's not the Emma I remember from the comics.
Since Emma was a relatively minor character, she wasn't enough to sink the movie. Magneto was given a very strong character development, with loads of great scenes. The finale kind of fell apart for me, unfortunately. There was too much going on all at once. They really should have found a way to just not go aboard any of the navy ships. They were a distraction, and the inclusion of Michael Ironside was over the top cheesey.
Not perfect by any means - not an 8/10 movie really either - but it was so brilliantly in tune with what I LOVE about the X-Men. It wasn't just an action film, or just another 'supehero movie', which - bless them - the Avengers films all are, and things like Green Lantern etc.
It was like they based the whole thing off the stunning but brief conversation between Mystique and Nightcrawler in X2.
1. Tremendous cast. McAvoy did a good job, and Faussbender was amazing. I bought Bacon as Shaw, even though he doesn't match up with him in the comics. Even the youngsters weren't bad.
2. Period piece. This discussion has been brought up before in other threads, but more Comic Book movies should be period pieces, instead of trying to set up origin in modern times etc.
3. Cameos, especially Logan's. Ray Wise, Michael Ironsides, Dexter's dad, Boris the Butcher so many.
4. Mystique backstory and evolution. Very well done and more interesting than her origins in the comics, which seems to be just old-timey slut from the 1800s. You can have the Beast origin and how it ties in with Raven added to this portion as well. Makes sense without being convoluted.
5 Special effects, just about everyone's powers looked amazing and the final scene was fantastic looking.
Knocks.
1 January Jones
2. Special effects for Emma Frost
3. The inclusion of Riptide when the spot could have gone to someone else more well known.
As you can see Emma was a big disappointment, Mrs Jones is out acted by a cardboard box, and her diamond form looked cheap and unimpressive.
I loved this movie... Magneto and Professor X relationship threw out the film was awesome... And spot on if you ask me...
Im not a huge marvel fan but i loved this movie compared to X-Men Origins Wolverine. What a disaster that was... DEADPOOL. Nuff Said... And X Men 3 Last Stand... Professor X dies. What the flip?...
Magneto's storyline awesome... The Coin!!! Crushing the gaurds/soilders helmets with their heads still inside.
Beast with the shot that enhanced him into his true form! I loved that.
What i didn't like it First Class was when Professor got shot in the back. I stood up in the movie theater and cried "NO!!! thats not how it happened!!!" Got alot of funny looks.
Overall 9.5
There are so many good parts I can't list them all. I liked it enough to know im buying it for my collection
